To pass the four-hour exam, a person must have a grasp of the basic skills at least equal to that of the average high school senior, the Department said.

The state Board of Education awards to those who pass the "CHSPE" the Certificate of Proficiency, which is equivalent by law to a high school diploma. Persons who are younger than 18 when they pass the exam, however, must have parental permission in order to leave school before regular graduation. Open to all persons 16 or older, including adults, the exam costs $20 and is given only three times per year. Information bulletins, which include sample questions, a list of test sites and an application form and mailing envelope, are available at all high schools and most public library branches. OBITUARIES Dr. William Pittman Dr. William Robert Pittman, well-known local dentist and longtime Berkeley resident, died Monday in an Oakland hospital following a long illness. He was 85. A native of Birmingham, Dr.

Pittman was the first Black dentist to practice in this city, and continued to practice until his retirement in June, 1975. He came to Oakland as a small child to live with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Pittman, and was reared in East Oakland. He interrupted his education at Fremont High School to enlist in the Army and served with the 365th Infantry of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I.

After the war, he resumed studies at Fremont High and upon graduation enrolled at UC-Berkeley for predental training. Following this, he entered the University of California College of Dentistry in San Francisco. After learning that the administration would not graduate a Black, he transferred to Meharry Dental School in Nashville, Tenn. in his senior year. He returned to California in 1931 and passed the state board examination in June.

He immediately began his practice at 2930 Grove St. He was a member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Society, the Berkeley Dental Society, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Gamma Boule Chapter of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, the NAACP and the YMCA. Throughout his life he enjoyed playing golf, dominoes and bridge, and hiking, skiing and swimming at his cabin in the South Lake Tahoe region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Tarea Hall Pittman, well-known civil rights activist and radio announcer at KDIA, and several cousins. According to Dr.

Pittman's wishes, he was cremated and his ashes were released over the San Francisco Golden Gate. Osborne Funeral Directors of San Francisco handled arrangements. Gander ALBANY Services for Lillian Z. Gander, a nearly lifelong resident of the Berkeley-Albany area, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset View Mortuary, Colusa and Fairmount avenues, Berkeley-El Cerrito. A native of Iowa who had lived in Berkeley since 1900 before moving to Albany five years ago, Mrs. Gander died Tuesday at her home.

She was 95. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters and William Tell Lodge of Newark. She is survived by two sons, Walter, of Colorado, and Arnold, of Berkeley; a daughter, Edna Pievzi of Albany; brothers, Gilbert Zurilgen of Santa Rosa and Arthur two Zurilgen of Oakland; five grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Services will be officiated by Dr. Fred Stripp.

Burial will be at Sunset View Cemetery. BRIEFLY An anti-nuke garage sale ALBANY The Egrets, an anti-nuclear group, will hold a six-family garage sale on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 724 Curtis St. The money will go toward legal expenses incurred at the June 20 Livermore blockade.

There will also be an information table on upcoming anti-nuclear activities. Panel to focus on U.S. hunger "Domestic Hunger and the New Poor" will be the theme of a panel discussion at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Unitas, 2700 Bancroft Way.

Topics to be discussed will include "The Feminization of Poverty" and "Militarism and Panelists will be Rev. John Moyers, Dion Aroner, Rose Lucey, Greta Goldenman and Patti Whitney. There will be a stop at the Franciscan Vineyards for a tour and tasting, before going on to the spa town of Calistoga for a nohost lunch. There will be time for a visit to the Sharpsteen Museum and Brannan Cottage, before leaving for St. Helena and the Silverado Museum, which is devoted to Robert Louis Stevenson. The bus leaves Kensington Library parking lot at 9 a.m., returning at 5 p.m. Passengers board bus 20 minutes before departure time in order of receipt of payment. Troop 5 scouts for recruits Boy Scout Troop 5, which has served the Berkeley-Albany community for more than 60 years, is signing up new scouts in October and November. Boys who are at least 11 years old or who have completed the fifth grade are eligible. The troop meets at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley, 2345 Channing Way, on Friday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
