The British Columbia government Tuesday assembled the Songhee band of Indians on the reserve on the waterfront opposite the city of Victoria and paid over to the heads of the tribes sums ranging from $8000 to $11,500, a total of $426,000, for a surrender of the reserve. Immigration officials stationed along the Pacific coast and on the border line between country and Mexico may expect a rush of smugglers, conveying contrar band Chinese into this country, within the next few weeks, according to reports brought to this city by the crew of the Ensenada Transportation Companys steamer San Diego. It Is said that 900 Chinese are now en route to Mansanillo from Hongkong, aboard a steamship which plies between the Orient and Mexico for the purpose of bringing Immigrants and opium into the Southern republic. Cut off from the beaten route by revolutionary conditions, the Chinese, it is believed, will endeavor to reach the United States aboard smuggling craft A portion of them may land at Lower California coast towns and come overland to the border line to await opportunity to slip into this country. WASHINGTON, April 6. Repre sentative Cox of Ohio yesterday introduced a resolution calling upon President Taft to furnish Congress with information showing the entire cost to date of the occupation of the Philippines by the United States. Mr. Cox declared that the islands were a burden and that in case of war this country would be humiliated by losing them. He Intends to urge a treaty neutralizing the islands, placing them in the control of Great Britain, Japan and the United States.

Postmaster Ellis has been elected Secretary of the California Postmasters Association to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Post-master C. F. Baldwin of Whittier. Mr. Ellis has filled the office on two former occasions.
