ft ft A A 0 -r "i ByALMAOBERST SAN PABLO The Performing Arts Center at Contra Costa College is living up to its billing as a community cultural center The student spring production The Roar of the Greasepaint the Smell of the Crowd opened the month with elaborately staged performances of Anthony New-leys romping musical It continues at 8 oclock tonight and Saturday evening From now through June there will be drama ballet dance and music in both student and professional performances Proposition 13 nearly eliminated the new theater after it was already on the drawing boards It was saved by a campaign by faculty members Communication Arts division chairman Robert Wol-terbeek gives much of the credit to Jean Knox an English instructor at the college and wife of retired Assemblyman John Knox Without Jean Knox we wouldnt have the theater Wolterbeek said She provided the leadership and the drive Mrs Knox is now coordinating the programming for the new theater She works with a committee of faculty students and community leaders on selection promotion and publicity The next program will offer Pee Wee Claybrook veteran tenor sax player as guest artist with the CCC Jazz Ensemble directed by Alan Close on Tuesday Clay-brook stopped the show in a concert last spring with the Bill Bell Quartet and vocalist Tressa Lewis A xV -V A Sometimes a woman has to leave the man she lovesto find herself A veteran of the swing era of the 1930s and 40s and a still very active performer Claybrook has played with Earl Fatha Hines and many other jazz greats Also featured will be the CCC jazz classics to jazz Keith Bees Guitar Ensemble from De Anza and Pinole Valley high schools and the El Cerrito High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble will appear in concert at 8 pm on Wednesday Tickets are $250 general and $150- for students and seniors The Lamplighters the famed Gilbert and Sullivan Company based in San Francisco will present two short operettas next Friday at 8 pm Trial by Jury a satire on the English courts and human frailty involving a breach of promise suit and Cox and Box written by Burnsand with music by Sullivan just before he began collaborating with Gilbert The latter deals with Bouncer a landlord who rents a room to two different men one who works by day and another who works by night All goes well until Cox gets a day off Admission is $4 general and $3 for students and seniors Berkeley Conservatory Ballet takes over the theatre for their spring concert which opens with Prokofievs fairy tale Peter and the Wolf The rest of the program includes Aftershadows choreographed by Paula Goodman Gayne Pas de Deux Eight Spring Waters and Act II Scene II from Paquita featuring Julie Lemberger and Ron Thiele It is a repeat performance at the Performing Arts Center for the ballet company which performed The Nutcracker to sold-out audiences last Christmas There will be performances at 2:30 and 7:30 pm Sunday May 17 General admission $4 students and seniors $3 The Incident at Terminal Ecstasy Acres by Charlie Russell will be presented three nights in a row May 28 29 and 30 at 8 pm Russells Afro-American theatre production of In White America earlier this year stay It's hard to leave reviewer says "Its energy goes beyond the story of a young woman seeking to renew her faith It speaks to people in a special and mysterious way Originally presented for a two-week run under the title Catholic Girls it played to capacity houses every night at the Mark Taper Forum Theater Lab in 1979 Revived at the Odyssey Theater in West Los Angeles last month it again won critical acclaim Admission is $4 general $3 for students and seniors A presentation of The Pale Pink Dragon by CCCs Childrens Theatre at 1 pm' June 6 concludes the big block of entertainment It is a farce for the whole family featuring a witch a couple of princesses and a handsome prince and a most incredible pale pink dragon Admission is $1 for all It is a showcase for the best work of the college and high school music dance and drama students in the area It offers platform for visiting groups from the outside which are usually available only in large urban And it is available when not booked for instructional and college sponsored events for community events Mrs Knox said This is a stunning really exemplary collection of events that Shows what this theater can mean to the college community Mrs Knox is well-prepared for her assignment as coordinator of programming Although she has never acted on stage she has had a lifelong interest in drama and is on the board of directors of the Berkeley Repertory Theatre She was a member of the first faculty at CCC in 1950 then took time out for her family of two girls and boy She returned on a part-time basis to fill special staff vacancies and resumed her status as a full-time instructor in the early 70s The theatre features the latest techniques in design and has a computerized light board a deluxe sound system scenery shop other events On Sunday May 17 the Berkeley Conservatory Ballet will present its Spring Concert at 2:30 and 7:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center Wine and dine with the vintner SAN FRANCISCO An opportunity to meet the Simi Winery winemaker and sample some rare vintages is being offered to the public at a Meet the Winemaker Dinner at the Four Seasons Clift Hotel at pm June 15 The dinner is being held so that the City of San Francisco can bestow official honors upon the winery for its contributions to making Northern California of the premiere wine-producing regions of the world The
