to host Nevada Reno a WCAC powerhouse Cal controlled the tempo against a 9-1 squad which had been averaging 90 points per game but the Bears ran out of gas down the stretch and guaid Michael "Fly Gi control and we did what we wanted to take away their strengths But he added we did not eliminate our mistakes down the stretch and thats what proved costly in a close game We had things going our way in holding a five-point lead but then we reverted to some bad habits A Kevin Singleton jumper gave the upstart Bears a 56 51 lead with 1 57 to go But a combination of the patented Wolf Pack pi ess and missed fiee throw opportunities proved Cals undoing Grays stuff at 1 12 cut the lead to 56-53 and Kevin pel before Cal finally got on the scoreboard when Sparks sank a jumper with 15 seconds remaining Gray finished with 13-for-22 shooting and 27 points and center Edgar Jones playing with four fouls the final 5 21 of regulation play added 16 points and a game high 17 rebounds But Renos surprise punch was Contreras a reserve guard who missed only one of six shots for 10 points The Bears did an excellent job on the forwards and limited High who had a 17 0 average to seven points "We did a job on them in Sparks made only one of two free throws at 1 07 for 57-53 That enabled Raul Contreras jumper pull the Pack to within two with 55 seconds remaining Spaiks a freshman who provided 12 points off the bench then went to the line in a one-and one situation with 44 seconds left He missed and Reno began its drive to a tie Gray was fouled but he too missed Fellow guard Johnny "Sky High however in the professional ranks will play in the 54th Shrine East-West Game next Saturday But then there are others like Washington linebacker Mike Jackson who says I hope to prove a lot in this game because a lot of people say Im too small to be a linebacker in the National Football League The 6-foot-1 220-pound Jackson defensive star for the Huskies in last Januarys Rose Bowl triumph over Michigan will be matching his talent against such East players as Kellen Winslow the huge tight end from Missouri and Marylands powerful running back Steve Atkins in the Shrine game next at Stanford Stadium John Lynn a defensive back from UCLA who at 5-11 may also be considered too small for the NFL knows one of his challenges wwll be covering Clemson All-American receiver Jerry Butler "Ive never seen him play of course but I know all about him he does 40 yards in 4 2 seconds said Lynn The East squad to be coached by Jerry Claiborne of Maryland has four first-team All-Americans on its roster in Butler Penn State offensive tackle Keith Dorney Alabama defensive lineman Marty Lyons and Richmond defensive back Jeff Nixon About one-third of the East-West players are coming here directly from bowl games Many of the others have had a full month off since their teams seasons ended "But Im sure theyre all going to be in good shape They have too much at stake They know the pro scouts will be watching" said Washington Coach Don James an assistant to West head coach Claude Gilbert of San DiegoState The scouts have seen all the players already but now they can see them play against each other and make some comparisons" he added How will the 265-pound Dorney handle such opponents as Rich Dimler the 255-pound defensive lineman from Southern Cal? Can East defensive linemen including Lyons get through the West defense to Stanford quarterback Steve Dils?
