'-7 Page 10-PACIFIC DAILY NEWS Tuesday February 13 1973 NAS To Be Renamed Brewer Field Thursday Naval Air Station will be renamed Brewer Field after Navy Cdr Charles Brewer Jr in dedication ceremonies Thursday Brewer was flying a F6F Hellcat during the Marianas Turkey Shoot in June 1944 when he was shot down by enemy aircraft over Orote Field Prior to his death he destroyed Cve Japanese planes Guests at the ceremony are scheduled to include the former wife Mrs Grace Williams of Concord North Carolina his sister Mrs Elizabeth Wynn of Borrego Springs California his brother Joseph Brewer of Playa Del Rey California and his two sons George and Charles Brewer III Three admirals also are scheduled to attend the dedication ceremony They are RAdm Robert Fowler Jr Commander Patrol Forces Seventh Fleet RAdm HS Morre Commander Fleet Air Western Pacific and RAdm Rivera Named To GHURA Post Jose Rivera Guam Housing Corp president has been appointed vice chairman of the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal board of commissioners The office had been vacant since August 8 when Jose Untalan resigned In addition to his official duties Rivera is active in community affairs His activities include: co-chairman of the Red Cross drive and board member of the local chapter the abatement committee at Guam Memorial Hospital and the Mongmong parish council NAVAL COMMANDER Charles Brewer Jr was photographed in typical war-time pose by Navy photographer In dedicatiorTceremonies this week be renaming Naval Air Station in his honor (Navy Photo) George Morrison ComN avMa rianas The action of the USS Essex home ship for June 19 1944 reads in part VFs took off at 1658 led by Cdr Brewer for a VF sweep over Guam to destroy incoming enemy AC An attack on more than 20 Zekes and 1 'Judy left 7 Zekes and 1 Judy destroyed while airborne 3 Zekes probably destroyed damaged unknown Our losses were Cdr Brewer and Ens Tan: The remaining 5 VFs returned to base under Lieut Overton at 1910 flight proceeded to Guam climbing for altitude up to the overcast which was developing at Orote Field was orbited with a gradual let-down No enemy AC were seen airborne until about 1820 when a lone Judy was seen circling evidently preparing to land The flight took off after the Judy which was destroyed But just then 1825 Cdr Brewer made a tallyho on at least four divisions of Zekes who were diving down from and astern to attack At this point our VFs were not in a defensive position but were slightly strung out Only Cdr Brewer and his wingman Ens Tarr and Lieut Overton and his wingman Ens Mellon could turn to meet the attack and they were slow in speed and had to climb The Zekes hit with coordinated attacks 4 to each F6F Brewer was seen to hit the leader of the division attacking him and the Zeke continued in its dive crashing with a burst of flame on the ground At almost identically the same time another Zeke burst into flames from the same division shot down by Ens Tarr From this point on all F6Fs were occupied with attacking Zekes and Cdr Brewer and his wingman were not again positively identified during the remainder of the battle At one time some time later 'an F6F was seen to pull up in what could have been the start of a wingover or loop but in its climb it shuddered fell off and evidently did not recover It could have been cither Cdr Brewer or Ens Tarr No other F6F was seen to crash surviving pilots are of the firm belief the Japs sent in a Judy low over the field as a trap to draw down the F6Fs If such were the case the Japs were very successful and the trap will always be remembered by this Indonesia Not Banning Mrs Sargent JAKARTA Indonesian authorities yesterday denied they would not extend the visa of American anthropologist Mrs Wyn Sargent who has married a West Irian tribal chief to study the sexual habits of that region An Immigration Department spokesman said Mrs Sargent entered Indonesia Jan 4 and her visa could be extended three months at a time depending on the circumstances The official Antara News Agency has carried a dispatch from its correspondent in Jayapura capital of West Irian saying Mrs Sargent has been denied an extension of her visa Win a free trip for 2 Okinawa Taiwan and Hong Kong!
