Page 20 The Lincoln Star Tuesday, Two or three records set in general election By Dick Holman Star Staff Writer At least two and probably three records were set in the Nov 2 general election. Secretary of State Allen Beermann said Monday, when the State Canvassing Board met to certify results and candidates' victories. The total number of votes cast 624,698 surpassed the old 1940 mark of 623.781 for a presidential election. And 74 3'; of the approximately 840.000 total registered voters turned out at the polls this month, placing Nebraska "in the top five or top 10of all states," Beermann said In the probable record category was the 17.030 grand total of persons who didn't vote for any of the five choices for president, but who marked their ballots for candidates in other races or ejection issues such as constitutional amendments Such canvassing statistics weren't kept in all past elections, Beermann noted, which is the reason the 1976 selective voting can't be designated firmly as a new topper The grand total of ballots cast for president was 607 668 Addressing the record turnout. Gov .1 James Exon, board chairman, cited effort to get out the vote" particularly by the news media By contrast, the 53 turnout nationally makes records "even better," the governor said.

"1 think the bicentennial spirit caught up with the people." Beermann added of the draw to the voting booths, he thinks, was a desire to prove wrong the public opinion polls, which predicted mass voter apathy In the increasingly tight presidential race, People thought "my vote might count for once'," he said Beermann announced that of the eight proposed amendments to the Nebraska Constitution. two carried by 35 of the total vote, the minimum needed for passage He said Exon will proclaim the pair part of the Constitution as of Monday. One allows the Legislature to override by line item the governor's veto of sums or reductions in appropriations bills The other permits contracting for nonsectarian services for handicapped children Law is required to implement. A long list of candidates failed to file all their required campaign expenditure-receipts forms "Many of these are and Beermann said his office will withhold their election certificates until they comply. Among major races, those failing to report properly include Dee Everitt of Lincoln, who lost a State Board of Education bid, and Donald .1 Jensen of Omaha, who ran unsuccessfully for the 3rd District Public Service Commission seat Beermann said six candidates in three races are entitled to an automatic recount, unless the losers waive it, because the winners failed to get elected by 15 or less of a vote spread Only three votes separated John Ely with 2.761.

from David 2.758 in the Upper Elkhorn Natural Resources District race. Cuming Public Power District voters provided only a four-vote margin for Vernon Schultz, at 1.432. to 1.428 for Norman Schultz. In the Nebraska Public Power District subdivision six election. Beermann said the names of candidates Ralph Beermann and John Lvdick were omitted from the ballot in Cuming County but appeared on the ballot in other counties that make up the district Ralph Beermann won, getting 16.043 votes to 5,979 for Lvdick Thus the secretary of state said that even if the total of 4,939 votes cast in Cuming County- had gone to Lvdick, "he would not have even been in contention for a let alone a victory Ralph Beermann was declared the winner United Press International teach Amy AArs.

Verona AAeeder, Amy Carter's future fourth- grade teacher, holds her dog, Grits, after it was announced that President-elect Carter has chosen the Thaddeus Stevehs Elementary School in Washington for his 9-year-old daughter to attend. the medical center's interim chancellor Childrens has announced plans to relocate in part of a 280- bed tower which would be built at Methodist Hospital But would remain at its present location for at least four years. "We hope we can plan and work together at least for that period of time We want to be good neighbors," said N.U. Medical Dean Perry Kigby. Rigby said the three hospitals would be equal partners in solving mutual problems Methodist Hospital would also help since it has contracted to manage Childrens Hospital, university officials said Dr Rigby said the medical center might move some pediatric programs to Childrens Hospital if Childrens agreed to accept more young medical center patients Childrens officials said earlier they need more specialized medical services available at Methodist. Dr Rigby said the institutions around the medical center can put together as many, if not more, specialized services Childrens administrator Stephen Long said the hospital would do some planning with its neighboring institutions Long said Childrens couldn't start such planning, however, until after health agencies review the Methodist- Childrens project and if approval is given construction is begun The Childrens Methodist plan starts the review process in December.
