with fresh water The clothes were rinsed in this manner and then run through the wringer into a large wicker clothes basket The washer was drained and filled again with fresh water and the sheets and white shirts were transferred from the washboiler to the washer with a wooden rod made from a broom handle When they were rinsed and put through the wringer I helped mother carry the basket of clothes to the clothesline While she was hanging the clothes on the lines I emptied and dried the washer and washboiler and mopped the kitchen floor When she came in we carried the washer and washboiler back to the washhouse All the water used was rainwater pumped from the cistern as was done in many homes of that day While mother packed fathers lunch I had a bowl of cornbread and milk When I finished eating I put the lunch in the basket on the handlebars of my bike and headed for the old fence factory where father worked Another Monday wash day had become a memory of 60 years ago To Drug Abuse of the old hand operated agitator as it washed clothes in the old washing machine Monday morning rain or shine the family wash was done If the weather wasnt fit to hang the wash outside it was hung in the washhouse next to the kitchen After the breakfast dishes were washed and put away the old copper washboiler was placed on the double-burner gas hotplate and filled with water The burners were lighted and while we waited for the water to heat mother and I brought the washer into the kitchen This washer was made of wood stood tai four legs had a tin-lined half -moon shaped tub and a detachable rocker agitator and hand oper-ated wringer The water in the washboiler was ready and it was poured into the washer along with some chips of handmade laundry soap The water was stirred until the soap had melted and then the dirty clothes were added The agitator was put in place and I began the chore of rock- ing it back and forth Mother put the washboiler back on the hotplate and filled it half full of water She shaved some soap into it and added the sheets and white shirts A cover was put on the boiler and the contents were allowed to boil When they had boiled long enough the burners were shut off Mrs Ross Clark and Catherine Hahn attended the state convention of The American Legion Auxiliary at French Lick recently Nancy McNew drum major at KHS received a first class
