The INDEPENDENT and GAZETTE Wed July 26 1978-3 i Radio station plans to keep Local big-band music on the air approval of the sale A vigorous public relations campaign coordinated by the Women History Research Center was launched and petitions contained some 20000 signatures were filed with the FCC Washington Among the early signers was the late Bing Crosby The agreement between the guild and Golden Gate Radio is being filed with the FCC and is expected to be approved by the commission Thursday The agreement and prior filings with the FCC provide that the KMPX format be continued and that Edwards extend a good faith offer of employment to present KMPX station manager John Jensen and other on-the-air personalities It also calls for a partial reimbursement of $85000 to the guild for legal and other expenses incurred the Save KMPX Campaign which is about $120000 in debt In a separate agreement between CBS and Golden Gate CBS agreed to pay $75 000 of the reimbursement die remainder to be paid by Golden Gate Edwards said Tuesday that he is very optimistic that the format will be successful Good news for KMPX listeners is that Edwards plans to operate the station on a 24 hour basis instead of the current 18 hour daily schedule Guild officers George Conklin (president) Ms (vice president) and Kay Snowden (secretary) joined in hailing the agreement as a victory the continuing national effort to assure that listeners (and viewers) rights are given priority in FCC rulings Conklin said he didnt believe KMPXs listener range would be seriously affected by the drop from an 80000- to a 4200-watt station KMPX is an inefficiently operated 80000-watt station said Conklin a communications expert on the Pacific School of Religion faculty It has a very old transmitter Edwards said he will have about 40000 records from the era covered by KMPX Im going to try and keep close to what is being played by the station and get a feel for what the listeners want he said I think theres a very good chance it will end up taking off By GORDON RADDUE SAN FRANCISCO A victory the fight to keep the big band era sounds of KMPX on the FM radio dial has been claimed by the Berkeley group that began the battle 22 months ago At a news conference Tuesday in a Hilton Hotel ballroom the KMPX Listeners Guild disclosed details of an agreement clearing the way for a $4 million exchange of three radio station licenses among four corporations The key part of the agreement for KMPX listeners is that the stations umque format will be maintained at a new frequency 98 9 with the
