PAGE MONDAY NOV 2 1970--PACIFIC DAILY NEWS Window On The World Trust Territory programming follows Sesame Street In the earlydays much of this segment was filled by educational and documentarY films with occasional live discussion type programs of local interest Since March 1970 the TT pro-gram time in the broadcast schedule has been the responsibility of the Marianas District rather than Headquarters responsibility and the amount of live programming has increased Education and health matters are high on the list of topics which fill the air waves at this hour The typical evening moves then to Walter Cronkite and network entertainment shows all taped in San Francisco for use on Guam and Saipan The distance from the mainland US makes it necessary to broadcast programs on a delayed basis and while this might not make much difference for the entertainment shows it is sometimes strange to see a news program or a world series game that is several days old Tapes are flown to Guam for use there and then to Saipan via Air Pacific the small air taxi service which station owner Killgore started in part just to bring the TV material to WSZE While on one hand there has always been talk of expanding the service to Palau and Truk districts there is also talk now that the Saipan station is losing' -so much money it may have to shut down But while the commercial broadcasters and the government ponder the future of television on Saipan and i the rest of the Trust Territory fans of WSZE TV can look back on a fuU year of magical pictures sent through the air into their living rooms that showed them a lot more of the world around them than many even knew existed ing Corporation a subsidiary of Pacific Broadcasting Corporation on Guam operators of KUAM radio and television Primary stockholder in Paci- fic Broadcasting Is Scott KiHgore who owns a number of stations elsewhere Killgore -had been trying to bring television to Saipan for a long time before be finaUy got the okayof the Trust Territory government His first proposal would have established a relay station on Rota the island between Guam and Saipan to beam signals from KUAM to Saipan receivers But those efforts met resistance from government officials who were not convinced that the programming carried by the Guam station was the kind of programming that ought to be seen in Saipan Finally in the faH of 1968 Killgore proposed that a station to originate programming on Saipan be constructed The program schedule for the station would be subject to review by a TT television advisory board of three Americans and three Micronesians and 20? of the broadcast roughly one hour a day would be offered to the government for Informational or educational programming The proposal was accepted and WSZE began broadcasting in October 1969 The program schedule is now a mixed bag of informational films tapes and live shows in the early evening and straight network entertainment and riety shows later on Cartoons begin the day at 5:30 pm follows by a local newscast delivered by David Maratita Marianas District Economic Development Officer and one -of few real television personalities The hit of the early evening schedule is Sesame Street which normally follows the news Television has celebrated its first birthday on Saipan This first year has brought the World Series and Sesame Street Ha- -waii Five-O and Mission Impossible Doris Day andTom Jones Spiderman and Smokey the Bear into living rooms on this tiny island of 10000 and for better or for worse Saipan is linked with world of things fantastic and beautiful and things ugly and all too real There is probably no other television operation like it anywhere which combines the longdistance logistics of the jet age with the cramped quarters of the Saipan studios that make the lone technician feel like he is working out of a spare laundry room in a small hotel In fact that is the case WSZE broadcasts on Channel 8 on Saipan and relays its signal to remote parts of the island through the use of TV translators on channels 10 and 12 The program schedule covers roughly 30 to 33 hours a week sometimes more when there are football games in the fall for Saturday afternoons The station is on-the-air every night except Monday when Angel Ocampo the jack of-all-trades at SWZE gets a well earned night off During most days Angel works at tuning equipment at the studios and at remote transmitter sites then takes over at broadcast time to run the film projects the video tape ma- chines the audio tape record--ers and the single 'television camera in the small announcing studio Home for the station is two small rooms on the second floor of the Royal Taga Hotel and a door off the control room leads to thg water heater for the laundry room once located where electronic equipment nearly overflows the facilities The television outlet is owned by the Micronesian Broadcast By Dena Wlnham Toddler hobgoblins were impatient to get about the business of HaUoween haunting Several days ahead of time little spooks in cos- tomes began perfecting their trick or treat techniques Invariably it ended with a sweet treat from the and a demure thank- you by the smaU munster 1 I i The Paul Winsors and Primo Christies co-hosted a natal day ka-sayahan for Nievei Malabanan Lyric soprano Elsa (Mrs Cecilio) Villanueva entertained with classical arias as well as the standard Happy Birthday melodies I i Congressman Charles Domnick and Community Development Director Erhart Aten (representing the Marshall Islands Community Action Agency) are in Ponape to study the success of the Ponape Transportation Board (PTB) Usingjocal labor some public works machinery and a lot of initiative the PTB has opened up miles of roads that have teen neglected since the Japanese built them some 30 years ago start with the Marshalls agency has a nine-man board of directors a backhoe and a bulldozer donated by the Congress of Micronesia and $15000 appropriated by the Niti jela Domnick and Aten hope formula can te copied to put the agency into action 1 Jean Ivey and Lawrence Moder osianannounced their recent marriage in Hawaii The home is in Kalispell Montana The bridegroom is contract administrator The couple met three years ago in Washington DC 1 Mr: and Mrs Elias Thomas are the parents of a new daughter CoUeen their fourth born in Saipan Their three older daughters and two sons were born in Ponape Seventy-five new automobiles arrived in Majuro to add to the 335 now registered in the Marshalls making the road through Rita the busiest in Micronesia (somewhat like Marine Drive at 5 pm) on a Saturday night half the vehicles on the road are for hire sporting taxi dome lights PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT How good it Is to see Ponape DistAd Boyd Mackenzie up and traveling after being bedded for several months at Guam Naval Hospital Joe remarks about Micronesians sticking their heads in the sand and whistling through -their teeth about independenceTbe heat of election campaigning in Palau District What Have Got To Say?
