News-Pilot Wednesday July 2 1997 AST i OBITUARIES COMPILED BY MARINE EXCHANGE Former Carson mayor Yamamoto dies at 83 4 I By Michael Gougis STAFF WRITER Sakae Sak Yamamoto a World War II internment camp prisoner who went on to help establish the city of Carson and served on its first City Council and as mayor died Saturday after a lengthy illness He was 83 He was involved in so many things Yamamotos family said in a statement Tuesday Carson was very important to him He was a wonderful husband father neighbor and friend Born Jan 17 1914 in Yamamoto and his wife Greta were held at the internment camp at Tulare Race Tracks in central Cal- ifornia until 1944 The family relocated to Addison 111 where Yamamoto served as a volunteer firefighter and was elected to his first public office as a member of the DuPage County Board of Education In 1954 Yamamoto and his fam ily moved back to the West Coast purchasing property on Bonita Street but they were forced to relocate by the government when the land was needed for a school Undaunted Yamamoto remained involved in community affairs and in 1960 he served as a board member of the Dominguez-Carson Fact Finding Committee one of the committees studying incorporation for the area Yamamoto served as a Chamber of Commerce representative in 1968 the year Carson became a city and was elected to a two-year term on the City Council After stepping down in 1970 Yamamoto ran again and won in 1972 serving until 1979 During that period council members selected a mayor from among themselves Yamamoto held the post in 1973 1977 and 1978 His political career ended when he was recalled in 1979 during a tumultuous debate over the extent of industrial development Yamamoto is survived by his wife of 60 years Greta a son Glen three daughters Karen Brenda and Janice nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren Visitation is from 2 to 9 pm today at Green Hills Mortuary in Rancho Palos Verdes Services will be at 11 am Thursday Agnes Kruse Services are Thursday for Mae Agnes Kruse of Palm Springs a former 20-year resident of San Pedro Born Oct 10 1904 in Brookfield Wash she died June 29 1997 in Palm Springs A homemaker Mrs Kruse lived in Palm Springs for 20 years She is survived by a son Willard of Sebastopol a sister Margaret Secrest of Long Beach and two nieces Visitation is from 2 to 5 pm today at Palm Springs Mortuary in Cathedral City Mass will be offered at 11 am Thursday at St Theresas Catholic Church in Palm Springs with burial at Desert Memorial Park The family asks that any memorial donations be made am at Green Hills Mortuary in Rancho Palos Verdes Burial was private at Green Hills Memorial Park Elizabeth Early Keith Services are Saturday for Elizabeth Early Keith a 68-year resident of San Pedro Born Feb 12 1906 in Columbus Kan she died June 30 1997 Mrs Keith who attended country schools in southeastern Kansas and graduated from Fort Scott High School in Kansas earned a teaching degree with honors from Kansas State University in 1926 and began her career at Old School in Arcadia Kan She taught at Barton Hill Elementary School in San Pedro in 1946 then helped open South Shores Elementary School in San Pedro in 1959 She retired in 1971 Mrs Keith supported her husband Virgil and his union colleagues through early waterfront strikes in 1934 that led to organization of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union She was a 25-year member and past worthy matron of Point Fer-min Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in San Pedro and Wayside United Methodist Church in Lomita She is survived by a son Robert Lee three sisters Luella Jensen of Colorado Springs Colo Laura Belle Rogers of Kansas City Kan and Margie Yesberger of Richland Wash five grandchildren and two
