The bureau said Sunday the valuable crude oil in the Appalachian region of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York, Ohio, and Kentucky, cannot be recovered economically with present methods. Scientists at the bureau's petroleum research laboratory at Morgantown, W. are experimenting with the fire technique.

i The process involves burning a part of tine oil. The heat produced in this operation will thin out tht rest of the oil so that air pumps can drive it to a producing well where it will be drawn to the fur- face. The fire would be started by an electrical device lowered into a well and supported by the air pumped through the well. Bureau Director Marling J. Ankeny szv the nation's recoverable petroleum reserves could be increased substantially if the technique is successfully developed.

Oil production in that area now is mainly by small pumping operations. Ankeny said that about two- thirds of all the petroleum discovered in the United States to date remains underground for lack of an economic production method. Fla. two years ago. Interment was made Lakeland Memorial Gardens.

Rules Are Clarified HARRISBURG (AP)--The Statt Revenue Department said Monday school bus fire extinguishers need not have visible pressure guages. The department previously had included the requirement in a new regulation which takes effect Sept. 1. The new requirement basically stipulates that extinguishers be of a dry type. The 1959 Legislature passed a in thejlaw banning carbon tetrachloridc extinguishers in school buses.
