"The Super 16 Scholarship Bowl is a key element in WNEP-TV's community involvement effort and commitment to the children and young people of northeastern and central Pennsylvania," said Elden Hale, WNEP-TV's president and general manager. "The competition supports local education, gives positive exposure to area schools, and encourages academic excellence," Hale stated. "It also provides an alternative to athletic competition." Also competing are the following high schools: Bishop Neuman, Bloomsburg, Dallas, Honesdale, Jim Thorpe, Mid Valley, Pocono Mountain, Scranton Prep, Shikellamy, Susquehanna, Tunkhannock and Wilkes-Barre G.A.R.

The Scholarship Bowl is sponsored by College Misericordia, the Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. and Stroud's. West Hazleton High School will compete in the Super 16 Scholarship Bowl, which will be telecast on WNEP-TV starting next Saturday. WHHS is one of 16 regional high schools that will participate in the scholastic competition, a half-hour program hosted by the television station's news anchors, Nolan Johannes and Marisa Burke. Teams of four students from each of the participating schools will be quizzed in mathematics, science, history, literature, sports and current events.

The show will be aired at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays beginning Oct. 6 and ending with the championship round on Feb. 2. Each member of the championship team will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship, and the winning school will receive a trophy.

Members of the runner-up team will get $750 scholarships. WHHS is scheduled to meet Ab-ington Heights in the first round. The match will be televised on Nov. 10. The cost is $35 and anyone who pays for their yearbook in full during October is eligible to win one of three prizes to be awarded on Nov. 1. First prize, a free yearbook with your name embossed on the cover; second prize, a $20 gift certificate from the Ovalon; and third prize, $10. You must order your yearbook during October and seniors are reminded to get your glossies in today! COLLEGE NIGHT On Wednesday, a College Night will be held at the Hazleton Area Vo-Tech School. A joint venture of Freeland High School, Hazleton High School, and West Hazleton High School, the event will be open to all students and parents and will be held between 7 and 8:30 p.m.

Approximately 50 colleges and university representatives, business schools, technical schools, industry and the military will be present. All secondary students and parents are urged to attend. SCHOLARSHIPS The Hazleton General Hospital is sponsoring a scholarship program for all high school students interested in pursuing a career in nursing. Tylenol is awarding 500 $1,000 scholarships to all eligible students who will be enrolled in a two or fou-year college, university of vocational school in the fall. The Jostens Fund is soponsoring a scholarship program that will give 300 scholarships of $1000 each to graduating high school seniors.

The American Society of Newspaper Editors is sponsoring a scholarship that will grant $750 scholarships to 60 minority high school seniors who plan to pursue newspaper journalism careers. The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts is sponsoring the 1990-91 arts recognition and talent search. Washinton University in St. Louis is offering a scholarship for 10 talented college bound black high school students. Named in honor of John B.

Ervin, a nationally recognized black educator. DeVry Institute is awarding 40 full tuition and 80 half-tuition scholarships to all qualified high school graduates. DIGGERS The Diggers Club of Hazleton High School elected officers this week and will have its first meeting at the beginning of the week. Christmas sales and a homecoming dance will be two of the items discussed. BAND PERFORMS The Hazleton High School Marching Mounts performed at the Bloomsburg Fair this past Tuesday. BAND SCHEDULE Practice for tonight's competition will begin at 2 p.m. and the performance will be tonight at 8:10 at Mid-Valley High School.

FBLA Monday is absolutely the last day to sign-up for FBLA. Members are asked to listen for announcements about the candy sale. For more information contact Mr. Gavio in room 305. GERMAN FIELD TRIP The German-U and German HI classes will be taking a field trip on Oct.

11 to the Amish Farms and farmlands of the Lancaster region. The cost is $3.60 and money is due by Friday. REUNIFICATION DAY Wednesday is Reunification Day for the two Germanys and to honor the day, the Social Science and German Departments will be handing out fun quizzes to students. The quizzes will be collected by German -III students and those students completing the quiz will be eligible to win one of five prizes to Germany to awarded nation wide. The entire contest is sponsored by Goethe Hous of New York and all students are encouraged to take part.

CONGRATULATIONS We would like to congratulate Kara Menconi, she recently won the title of Young Women of the Year at the Tamaqua-Carbon County Young Women of the Year Program. Congratulations also go to all those involved in our successful fall activities, great job! CANDY RETURNS Students are urged to make all candy drive returns as soon as possible. The drive ends Tuesday. Ryan DiSabella Lomb Science award and honors for the Voice of Democracy and was recently nominated to Who's Who Among American High School students.

He has participated with distinction in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science, receiving first place awards in both regional and state competition. At HHS, he is a member of the student council. He has played sax-aphones in concert and the marching bands since seventh grade. He has been nominated as a member of the Marywood and Tri-Hi honor bands. He also is a member of the ski club and gifted programs.

Outside of school, Ryan is employed at Edgewood In The Pines. He is also active in the Good Shepherd Church Youth Group and in the past was a sponsor for several church events. His outside interests include weightlifting, guitar playing and skiing. For his future plans, Ryan would like to study engineering at the University of Virginia. High School Christa Gimbi Youth Exchange Program are now available in the guidance office.

Information about the qualifications of applicants and the cost of the program are also available. Please see Mr. Kelshaw as soon as possibe if you want to be an exchange student for the 1991-92 school year. COLLEGE NIGHT Weatherly High School students are welcomed to attend a College Night on Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hazleton Vo-Tech School.

Over 50 representatives from colleges, trade and nursing schools will be there to help give ideas about future plans. OPEN HOUSE Open Houses will be held at the following schools: IUP today at 9 a.m., St. Francis College next Sunday at noon, the Reading Hospital School of Nursing on Thursday at 7 p.m., and Mulenberg College on Oct. 27 at 9 a.m. Any student interested may see the guidance office for more information.

COMMUNITY CHEST PARADE The Weatherly Area Community Chest Parade will take place on Monday starting at 6 p.m. Anyone who is participating in the parade should report to St. Nicholas' Church by 6:45 p.m. at the latest. Everyone is looking forward to seeing the high school band and the new Community Chest Queen and her court! FRESHMEN Please fill out your initiation permission slips and give them to your homeroom teacher.

You must hand them in by Monday. ATTENTION SENIORS Hoagie and pizza orders are due on Monday. Give them to any senior class officer or advisor. Also, ideas for initiation stunts should be written out and returned to a class officer as soon as possible. Hazleton High School Principal Rocco Mussoline announced that Bill King and Ryan DiSabella are semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship program. King is the son of Patrick and Denise King of 115 S.

Pine Hazleton. He has participated in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science four times. He also was in the Mock Trial, is a member of the Gifted Class, the French Honor Society and a member of Who's Who Among Foreign Languages in Pennsylvania. He was named to Who's Who Among American High School students and is a member of the Foreign Language Organization. King is a member of Boy Scout Troop 17 and completed all requirements for Eagle Scout honors.

DiSabella is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter C. DiSabella of Moun-taintop. He is a senior at HHS and is enrolled in the Advanced Academic track.

He has consistently received first honors since the seventh grade. He has received the Bauch Weatherly Area Jim Truver FYI Hello my name is James W. Truver. I'm president of Pennsylvania's chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America and a senior at Weatherly Area High School. I have many interests, and extracurricular activities besides FBLA.

I'm treasurer of Weather-ly's Student Government Association and a member of the Library Club. My list also includes band, (pep? marching, and concert). I feel that this year will be the best we've ever had at Weatherly. Show your enthusiam, Weatherly get involved. Hi, I'm Christa Gimbi and am also a senior at Weatherly Area High School.

I am interested in many activities. I am in the band (pep, marching, and concert), Student Government Association, and the yearbook staff. I have also been involved in many community activities such as S.O.L.E. II, and I have been the president of the Zion Lutheran Youth Group for three years. Weatherly High School has come a long way.

Let's show our spirit and support our school and community events! SGA SGA "playbooks" will be passed out at the next meeting. These "playbooks" will contain the SGA constitution, student roster, and committee member lists. Don't forget your $2 deposit! The Homecoming Committee held their first meeting last week. If anyone has any questions about homecoming activities, see a committee member. FBLA The Bloomsburg Fair field trip was a huge success.

Special thanks go to Mr. Knepper and Mr. Pino for volunteering to be chaperones. Anyone interested in FBLA should see Mrs. Moran.

The minutes from last week's meeting are available in room three for anyone who could not attend. Next Monday, FBLA members will be visiting each homeroom to answer any questions students have about the activities, or fundraisers FBLA is conducting. GIRL SCOUTS Any girl interested in joining Girl Scouts should contact Mrs. Trovitch at 427-4184. Girl Scouts is an excellent organization that helps the community grow.

Help your community, join today! FIELD TRIP Two English classes went on a field trip to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair in New Hope. This field trip provided a retrospective view of the Elizabethan period in English history. The students sampled many different foods popular in that era. They also participated in fun-filled activities. The day ended in a realistic joust.

Attending the program will be approximately 50 representatives from colleges, and military.

All are urged to attend this program, especially those students who are just looking at colleges. SCHOLARSHIPS Josten's Foundation Leadership Scholarship program will award 300 scholarships of $1000. College Scholarship Essay Contest on Ayn Rand's Novel The Fountainhead. Tylenol Scholarship Fund will award 500, one-time $1,000 merit scholarships. COLLEGES Alvernia College will be at W.H.H.S.

on Oct. 3 at 1:30 p.m. Temple University will be at W.H.H.S. on Oct. 4 at 10 a.m.

Also on Oct. 4, Franklin and Marshall will be at W.H.H.S. at 2 p.m. La Salle University will be at W.H.H.S at 1 p.m. on Oct.

Susquehanna University will be holding their Open House on Oct. 27. Mulenburg College will be holding one of their Open Houses on Oct. 27 and the other on Nov. 17.

See Mr. Cortes for further information. Anyone who is interested in these colleges are urged to attend. ANIMAL RIGHTS COALITION Anyone in grades 7-12 can sign up for the new W.H.H.S. Animal Rights Coalition Club.

Topics covered will be vegetarianism, fur, and the ocean crisis. Preparatory School MayaPelly Elizabeth Pinkey FRESHMEN ORIENTATION This past week the MMI Freshmen were officially welcomed into the Prep School during the Freshman Initiation.

This year's theme was Senior Animal Farm and the freshmen dressed accordingly as chickens, pigs, and cows. It was a fun-filled week for everyone and we'd like to thank the freshmen for being such good sports. They can look forward to getting revenge on the seniors at the upcoming slave auction where the seniors will be auctioned off as slaves for a day. THANK YOU Thank you to everyone who helped at and attended the annual family buffet. It was a great success and everyone had a great time.

OFFICERS ELECTED Several school organizations have recently elected their officers for the 1990-91 school year. The officers of the Spanish National Honor Society include: Maija Pelly, president; Gail Denesvich, vice-president; Elizabeth Pinkey, secretary; Jennifer Lovraic, treasurer; and Derek Gennaro, historian. The officers of the German National Honor Society are: Katrina Bower, president; Alyssa Dotte, vice-president; Jeanne Rudawski, secretary; John Rhee, treasurer.
