in the barber business here is increasing his business as to re quire the services of another man Golden Gate At the meeting of the Board ol Trustees held on Monday evening last the following brief sketch of the life of Reuben Rickard was read by President Richards and ordered spread in full upon the minutes of the meeting Reuben Rickard was born in England August 20 1841 and at a very early age began the practical study of his chosen profession mining engineering He served his apprenticeship in the machine shop and assay office and also spent a year or two in the study of surveying and bookkeeping His energy and ability won him the confidence of his employers and he was promoted to various positions of trust While still a very young man he was employed by John Taylor Sons of London to superintend their mining and metallurgical ventures in Pontgi-baud in the province of Puy de Dome France and here he gained great experience in mining and treating silver lead ores His success at this place and his knowledge of this particular line of work secured him the offer of the management of the celebrated Richmond Mining Company at Eureka Nevada which he accepted and he en tered upon his new duties on February 2 2d 1875 He resigned this position after a most successful period of six years during which time he acquired considerable property which proved quite profitable On resigning in October 1881 he occupied himself in examining and reporting mines in this country and Mexico for English capital He married Mary Elizabeth Humphreys on October 3d 1863 and six children were born of the union five boys and one girl wo boys died in France while very young and another passed away in ii887- The family moved to Berkeley on July 24th 1882 and after a trip to Europe in 1 883 Mr Rickard practically returned and devoted himself to looking after his investments and to town affairs in which he always displayed great interest The loss of his wife in March 1895 and his consequent grief drove him into activity again and the fatal trip to the deserts of Yest Australia resulted His success may be attributed tef his knowledge of men his adaptability to circumstances and conditions patience perseverence ent usiasm and not last of all to the influence of a loving and faithful wife for whom and his children he lived a life of perfect devotion After the presentation of the resolutions and sketch Fresident Richards said: Such is a brief sketch of a remarkable man whose untimely death is a great loss to Berkeley The great majority of men pass away unnoticed save by their immediate circle of friends but there are a few men who stamp their individuality upon the land and age in which they live We never can contemplate Socrates without thinking of Plato James Momoe still dominates the policy of the United States as effectually as though he occupied the presidential chair today So in a smaller and more contracted sphere Mr Rickard has left his im press upon Berkeley Our new Charter for which he labored most earnestly gives evidence of his guiding hand As with men of force and strong will power a space cleared itself around him leaving room for freedom and in dependence of action The distinguishing characteristics of Mr Rickard may be summed up in one short phrase public spirited citi sen This is our American pattern ol nobility- We have no objection to a certain kind ol aristocracy Aristocracy rightly means the government ol the best and the best are the public spirited citizens This is the kind of aristocracy of which no one has any need to feel a fear Everyone may The regular meeting of the Club was held last evening President Hadlen in the chair There were a goodly nttm-'rr present and all the officers answered to their names The Trustees and School Directors of West Berkeley were also present After the reading ol the minutes three new members were elected iz Clias A Bailey George Phillips and Mr Bramskd The President then introduced Mr Bailey who addressed the Club for an hour upon the advantages that Berkeley offered as a location for industrial pursuits and a place that was desirable for homes where people would become wise and enjoy the beauti-ul scenery which nature has so lavishly-bestowed upon Berkeley That Berkeley is such a place was evidenced front the fact that the State University was located on the foothills here and also the handsome and extensive buildings of the Deal' Dumb and Blind Asylum The rapid growth of East Berkeley proves that a great many people hold the same opinion He said that Berkeley is far ahead of Oakland Alameda and even San Francisco as a place to establish a large and healthy city and there is but little doubt but what Berkeley would have been the metropolis of the Pacific Coast if the railroad company had built a pier out to deep water from the Berkeley shore in the first place The lack of water had operated against Berkeley and kept it in the background Berkeley at the present time is not making the progress that it ought to It is it is true making rapid progress in East Berkeley but the other two-thirds of Berkeley was at a standstill for the lack of quick communication with San Francisco and Oakland It would help nutters a great deal if West Berkeley had a through train to the mole The train could be run as one to Sixteenth street having a Loo-motive in the middle of the train A riving at Sixteenth streU the train could be cut in two and the first section could go right ahead making its first stop at Adeline street and so on to Berryman and the latter half could stop at all the stations troin Sixteenth street to West Berkeley The Southern Pacific has done a great deal for Berkeley and will no doubt do a great deal more in the future if the matter is presented to them in a proper way The need of electric roads through the central and western parts of town has been a long felt want and be urged the necest-yof taking immediate steps to offer inducements to the Oakland Consolidated Company or the San Pablo avenue tine to extend its lines to West Berkeley In order to start the matter Mr Bailey offered $1000 toward a bonus fund for any electric railway company that would give direct communication with Oakland the road to run through the centtal portion ol town 1 le would also give a site in the Grayson tract to any firm or corporation that would locate a factory there employing 45 or 50 men The- Chairman appointed the following committee to take the matter of securing nure water in hand and push it along: Chas A Bailey Spear and Fred Wilkes As a committee to see the San Pablo avenue line and induce them to extend their lines to West Berkeley: Chas A Bailey Ed Niehaus A Shuster and Spear As a committee to interview Shattuck and get him to renew his offer ofa site for the Wilmer ding school: Messrs Bailey Hoff and Durrell The following resolution was unanimously adopted: Resolved That the Club protests against any more sewers being laid in West Berkeley until the water supply is sufficient to flush them The Secretary was notified to present this resolution to the Board of Trustees The necessity of a public wharf was very manifest from the remarks of Mr Renas who said that the merchants about town had Ijgen notified that after March first the price of freight by the Steamer Hope would be increased 25 cents per ton This is because ihke is no public wharf where merchants can luitif their wares and it would compel busidrss men to haul wood end coal from Oukund a distance rf five r-iles when if there ts a public wharf it could be landed at our very doors In the ir-atter oi the estate of the late Henley of West Berkeley udge Frick yesterday ordered the reality distributed among the heirs he will be given for fifty cents per month-and will be for an unlimited use to the full capacity of the circuit with which the several telephones are connected This telephone is placed in the kitchen only not in the hall nor in the dining room nor any outside room but directly in the kitchen where it can be readily used to the physician druggist butcher baker grocer coal dealer etc This kitchen telephone service will be allotted for the principal exchanges of the State the allottment being one hundred sets each for Los Angeles San Jose Sacramento Stockton Oakland and San Diego These telephones are for outward service only On account of the saving made' by the company in that no arrangements are required lor being called up and the saving at the Central office for the samp reason a number of stations can be placed upon one pair pf wire! The fact that this telephone is first for the special uses mentioned does not prevent its general use in connection with any one of the local subscrib ers connected with an exchange These kitchen telephones will be of great use to Berkeley people as the residences here are all some distance from the business part of the town and much time and inconvenience may be saved by placing one in your kitchen Card of Thanks Editor Gazette Allow me through your paper to extend my sincere thanks to Mr ONepl Mr Windrum and son Charles and Thomas Crue of Channing way Mr Martin and Mr Nixon of Fifth street Mr lurseson and brother and Dr Polaci of Sixth street and the others for kindly repairing the damage done tJ my property resulting from the wind storm of Saturday February 29th and for the assistance given my family at that time while I was absent Respectfully Andrew Young Butte Montana March 6 1896 1 1 Overheard A conversation overheard by some students under the electric light: Hello Charley 1 Hello May!
