Berkeley I Daily BERKELEY CAL WEDNESDAY EVENING OCTOBER 28 1903 NEW SERIES: VOL XIII NUMBER 99 KILLING OFF THE CATTLE INJURY ENDS IN DEATH UNIVERSITY WORK ORDERED STOPPED BY TOWN ATTORNEY 45 4545454545454545454545 45 45454545 45 454545454545 45 45 45 45454545454545 The new electric line between Berkeley and San Francisco has 45 proved that the trip can be made In 35 minutes by actually doing it 45 45 They have demonstrated that within a short time the trip can be 45 made In 30 minutes Competing lines will have to make the same 45 time 45 Do you realize what this means for Berkeley? Do you realize 45 45 that Berkeley is now si close to the business center of San Fran- 45 -X- cisco as much of the residence portiin of that city? Do you realize 45 that Berkeley is now closer to San lrancisco than Oakland Alameda 45 45 or any suburban city? Do you realize that this means a new growth 45 45 and advancement greater even than we have had during the past few 45 years? X- It means for Berkeley a boom tA natural logical boom A 45 45 steady growth An upbuilding and -increase in population which will 45 make Berkeley the greatest resideree city in the State barring 45 if none 45 45- Berkeley is not only easy of acress to San Francisco but it has 45 45- a climate which is superior to anyln the State it offers the very best 45 45- of educational advantages it is free from places where liquor is 45 sold and it is because of these advantages and of its culture and 45 45 refinement an ideal place In which to raise a family 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 a thorough investigation of the trouble The University authorities violated municipal laws when they removed street curbing on Barrow street and fenced In Sylvan way It seems to me that the work of removing the barns Is being done in a high-handed manner and I do not propose that the laws of the city are to be broken any more by the persons in charge of the work It was the Intention of the University authorities to close up Sylvan way which is not a dedicated street for the purpose of affording room for a cadet parade grounds It is probable that the street will be claimed by the Town of Berkeley as the thoroughfare has been used for several years in a manner that gives a right of way Just as though it had been dedicated Barrow street was regularly dedicated however and In tearing up the curbing President Wheeler admits that a mistake was made Reports have come from Contra Costa county to the effect that the cattle of that region have been attacked with a fatal malady traced directly to the serum with which the squirrels were innoculated While nothing authentic has been received from any of the farms in the county It Is rumored that several cows have already died from the disease which first causes blindness It was several months ago that a serum producing rabies was used as an experiment on the squirrels The innoculation not only caused the death of the grain pests but spread with rapidity among them It is said that hundreds of the squirrels were killed off and that now the cattle which roamed over the hills where the rodents died are now going in the same way college stables from the banks of Strawberry creek to the corner of Allston way and Barrow street have not only aroused the ire of the residents and property owners of that vicinity but they have clashed with Superintendent of Streets Turner It seems that the trouble was caused by the removal of street curbing from the west side of Barrow street south of Allston way and by the fencing in of a portion of Sylvan way Yesterday Turner applied to Justice of the Peace Edgar for a warrant for the arrest of Superintendent of Grounds A Bolton and others in charge of the work of the removal of the barns stating that he would have the papers served if the work were not stopped But Justice Edgar called his attention to the fact that the warrants would have to be served If they were issued and advised him to consult with the Town Attorney This morning the consultation was held and as a result Attorney Hayne KEY ROUTE IS A GREAT SUCCESS The Key Route ferry the new electric ferry system built by the Oakland Transit Company has been running for three days and has proved an entire success in every part The traveling public is delighted with the service and the cart are crowded at every trip Expressions of admiration are heard on every hand at the palatial cars the handsome depot and the fast ferryboats fitted with all the modern conveniences Many parties are being made up to take the trip over and back The cars are finished in mahogany and the boats in hardwood with redwood stainhig The life preservers are easy to get and illustrated placards are frequent showing by photographs how to put them on Contrary to the expectations of some there is not a tremor as the cars pass at a forty-miles-an-hour clip along the longest pier of its kind in the world In the opinion of the public it is the ideal ferry The second controller car for the trains of the new key route ferry system has arrived and It is now being fitted up at the companys yards in Emeryville As soon as this car is in running order the company will be enabled to inaugurate a regular thirty-minute schedule between San Francisco and Berkeley It will probably be ready by the first of the week Each of the new electric trains is made up of a motor car controller car and two trailers and the arrival of the controller now at the yards completes the necessary equipment for the second train The present schedule is a little fast for the boats and the time of the trip will probably be extended from thirty-four to thirty-seven minutes The fact that no advertising Is permitted In the trains or on the boats that no dogs are allowed nor any soliciting nor the carrying of merchandise or baggage is favorably commented upon by the traveling public which is evidently highly pleased by these safeguards for Its
