TO HAVE BUILDERS LIBRARY FARMERS WANT A BUILDING TWO MEN KILLED IN TERRIFIC EXPLOSION AT SOBRANTE POWDER WORKS JUST NORTH OF HERE CHILD ALMOST DROWNS PENNIE IS UNDER ARREST (Special to Gazette) SOBRANTE March 14 In a terrific explosion which completely demolished the nitro mixing and drying room of the California Powder Works at Sobrante at 12:30 oclock today two workmen Jack Shepard and Howard Jack-son lost their lives and several men were Injured The detonation came without any previous warning and there is not the slightest clew as to the cause of the accident The workmen had Just returned from luncheon and the machinery had been started for the afternoon when the fearful accident and tragedy occurred The debris of the wooden buildings immediately caught fire after the explosion and the employes at work in the other buildings several hundred yards away and the other workmen engaged about the grounds experienced considerable difficulty in rescuing the injured and in keeping the dead from being cremated A band of volunteer fire fighters was at once formed and where water could not be used with effect the burning woodwork was pulled apart Both the nitro glycerin house and the dry room were one-story affairs In the nitro glycerin house the most delicate and expensive machinery is employed to mix the chemicals which form the dangerous explosive According to experts this portion of the factory is liable to go up at any time if the utmost care is not used A telephone message was at once sent to Martinez where Coroner Curry of Contra Costa county was notified He left on the first train to take charge of the remains During the heavy rainstorm which prevailed this morning Richard Harder the 14-year-old son of Charles Harder of San Pablo avenue and Holyoke street was almost drowned by falling into a deep pool formed by the recent storms in the vicinity of the furniture factory The cries of the lad were heard by the factory workmen who rescued young Harder as he was going down for the second time The chap was taken to his home where he was taken be explained as soon as he had sufficiently recovered that he was walking in shallow water when he suddenly slipped into the deep pool OVER HALF AN INCH OF RAIN FELL The controversy between Sanitary Inspector Luther Haws and Pennie a plumber of South Berkeley took another turn this morning when Haws had Pennie arrested for failing to comply with certain local plumbing ordinances According to the complaint Pennie did some work in a residence on the north side of Berkeley way between Grove and Louisa streets without first filing plans and specifications with the Town Clerk Another instance in which Pennie is said to have broken the law is in failing to file a certificate of completion for work done in a residence on the east side of College avenue between Dwight way and Kearney street It was only last week that Pennie filed a suit to oust Haws from offleo his contention being that Haws had illegally collected certain final inspection fees Some time ago Haws had Pennie arrested for failing to comply with the plumbing ordinance but the case was dismissed ACCIDENTAL DEATH WAS THE VERDICT As far as can be learned there were no Berkeley people in the accident West Berkeley are employed at the works although several former residents of A quarter million dollar agricultural building at the University of California is the project now being pushed through the Grangers throughout the State If the agitation already well under way reaches the strength that is expected the State Legislature next spring will vote for this additional structure for the Berkeley campus It is admitted by all conversant with conditions at the State University that an agricultural building is at present the great need The administration building and extra classrooms provided for in California Hall leave opportunity now for providing for the various interests centered in the so-called Cow College What were considered two very important needs a new library and a new mining building have been attended to through the generosity of the late John Doe and Mrs Phoebe A Hearst The wants of the agricultural college are now regarded as paramount The tremendous growth of the work of the agricultural department under the direction of Professor Eugene Hil-gard has commended itself to all interests throughout the State The agricultural extension work now increased by a correspondence school and the growing activities of the experiment station have far outgrown the accommodation in the present cramped frame building one of the oldest on the Berkeley campus It is believed by those interested in the movement that the needs of the agricultural college will receive first consideration at the hands of the Legislature next year POPULAR COUPLE WEDDED OXLEY- STEPHENS WEDDING It was reported at the regular meeting of the Hillside Club last Saturday evening that a library for the benefit of prospective home builders has been installed in the Hillside School A fund has been put aside by the club for the purchase of books on architecture and a number of pamphlets have been collected on artistic home building The library will be open to the members of the club who will be allowed to give their friends the use of the library The purpose of organizing the library which will be added to from time to time is to assist in filling the section northeast of the University grounds with artistic homes A resolution was passed condemning the practice of erecting more than one house on a building site Almeric Coxhead submitted plans for stone benches to be placed in various portions of the Scenic Tract One hundred dollars for carrying out the work was donated by the Oakland Transit Company One of the benches has already been placed at the head of Euclid avenue It is of stone with a wooden seat The club decided to give wide distribution to the circular written by Charles Keeler on artistic home building The pamphlet is written in an unusually entertaining style and has been favorably commented on wherever it has been received The members of the club discussed the possibility of engaging In the active study of arts and crafts for the purpose of holding an exhibition of their handiwork in the near future Especial attention will be given to wood carving and leaded glass work while the wives of the club members will study the famous Newcome embroideries of New Orleans That the ordinance prohibiting the posting of advertising signs about the city is being violated was the declaration made by several members of the club Dr Morris Carpenter was appointed to look into the matter FAMOUS PATRIOT TO SPEAK According to the observations taken by the Students Observatory of the commission on far eastern affairs authorizes the Associated Press to deny the story He says the situation at Port Arthur is unchanged and that nothing of importance has occurred there in the past twenty-four hours YIN KOW March 14 The local authorities are apparently Incensed and manifestly much annoyed at the solicitous inquiries of the commanders of foreign gunboats regarding the projected blocking of the Liao river before the arrival of the Japanese which latter event is regarded as a foregone conclusion Although the blocking of the Liao and also the defense of the settlement and native town are regarded as unattainable it is certain that an unimportant disposition of guns and the arrangement of a defense plan have already been made The arrival of General Kondratovich a few days ago however arrested the arrangements and threatened to cause the abandonment of the original intentions The highest Russian opinion obtainable at Port Arthur and New Cchwang admits the Government's intention to fall back indefinitely until the mobilization of 300000 troops for the purpose of assaulting and opposing the Japanese and probably 200000 more to oppose the Chinese night painted the fence and sidewalks about the High School building with their signs When the High School students arrived at the building this morning they found this inscription in red paint upon the fences and on the sidewalk before the school: 11 10 The game in question was played at Freemans Park on Saturday and was a league game Whichever side lost it would be hard for them to win the league championship and as each school has an able team neither will concede a point to the other In the ninth inning the score stood 11 to JO in Boones favor and Berkeley at the bat With a man on second Solinsky made a good hit and the man on second slid over the home plate just as the ball reached the catchers hands The umpire of the bases called the runner safe while the other umpire said that the catcher had touched him Since the question comes under the jurisdiction of the former the point was placed on Berkeleys score Boone's School protested and it will undoubtedly be decided by the league officials While the discussion was taking place Solinsky came In over the home plate leaving the score 12 to 11 in Berkeleys favor Last nights act was the result of the feeling on Boones part that the High School had not won the game fairly There is some talk among the students of the High School of retalia-' tion but the faculty are discouraging the plan The next game Berkeley High will play will be two weeks from today when the nine will meet the Polytechnic High School of Oakland The games scheduled by Boones for the remainder of the season are are the following: March 26 with
