KU Wins Battle; NU Wins War, 24-13 By CURT MOSHER Lawrence, Kan. sixth ranked Cornhuskers struck for three touchdowns in the second quarter here Saturday, then sat back to watch an exciting aerial show put on by the Kansas football team and two unidentified parachutists, who, try as they would, could not prevent a 24-13 victory. Nebraska, while racking np its eighth straight victory of the season before 45,500 fans, the largest sporting group ever assembled in Kansas, had things so much their own way in the first half the sun even showed itself for the i time seconds after the first Husker touchdown. But it was a different story in the second half as Kansas took the play away from NU, thanks in no small way to two Corn- husker fumbles in the third period. As a result of those fumbles a potential rout was suddenly turned into a foot- bal! game when Kansas struck for a touchdown on a 25-yard pass play which obviously was conceived by some circus promoter.

It was thrown by KU quarterback Bill Fenton to Hailey Kampschroeder, who was covered ably by Dennis Thorell. So ably was he covered in fact, the ball bounced off him and landed into the arms of Junior Riggins for a touchdown. When Dave Bouda n- verted it was 18-7 with 1:44 to play in the third quarter. And from that time on, Kansas, due primarily to nifty halfback Don Shanklin, was in the game until the Huskers regained their get out-of-my-way-cause- here-I-come attitude in the fourth period to drive 46 yards for the clincher. That touchdown, an eight-yard pass by record- setting Bob Churchich to Harry Wilson, came with 51 seconds left and the was over.

The game, however, and Kansas covered 78 yards in just four plays against Husker reserves to score a consolation touchdown when Shanklin threw a pass from the 12 to Kampschroeder who scored with no time left. While that second half could be debated as to whether Nebraska was busy digesting its first half performance or the hungry Jay hawks simple took the play away, there certainly was no doubt what was going on in the first half. The only flaw Kansas could find in the Nebraska machine was a weakness in extra points. Touchdowns, no. But extra pgints, yes.

Nebraska not only scored three times in second period, but even let Kansas darken its side of the 50-yard line until seconds before the half when the Jayhawks were so bold as to move to the NU 45. The first touchdown was a 69-yard march, requiring 14 plays. And Nebraska was taking such large bites of real estate it had all the earmarks of a government agency buying up urban renewal property. Mixing in just enough passes to keep things honest Churchich made his bid for the school career record for total offense. He succeeded later, finishing the day with 2,675 yards, 40 more than Dennis Claridge had during his stay at NU.

He contributed to it by whipping nine-yard passes to Tom Penney and Wilson and running eight yards himself on a keeper. He also managed to keep Ben Gregory, Pete Tatman and Wilson busy on the ground, the longest run a nine-yarder by Wilson. That carried the ball to the Kansas six and two plays later Gregory banged in from the three over Jim Osberg and Bob Pickens. conversion was wide to the right and NU was up 6-0 with 13:55 left in the half. The other two touchdowns came in a hurry.

First the Huskers drove 67 yards in nine plays with Churchich scoring from the 27-yard line on a keeper. Churchich looked on the play like he was more than willing to pitch it to somebody, almost anybody. But no Kansas player would come after him so the Omaha senior became a nifty broken field runner as he cut back over the middle after starting out to his right side. That drive featured nine and 12-yard passes to Penney, an eight-yarder to Gregory and a 12-yard run by Gregory who was escorted by a block by Wilson. After the Churchich touchdown, Wayne Weber was going to pass off a fake Wck, but he was nailed by Bill Hunt and it was 12-0 with 4:51 left.

It took all of 30 seconds for the Huskers to get the ball back and go after its third touchdown. On the first Kansas play, Continued on Page 6C, Col.
