Pressing close were the 31 evening lectures, including the series delivered here at the Congregational church which were attended by hundreds of Stockton citizens. Addresses before Epworth League institutes came next in the list with 25 while 15 addresses were made before teachers institutes, including the series delivered at Honolulu last December. Dr. Knoles is evidently a great deal more popular with men than with women, for he spoke 14 times before mens clubs and only six time before women's organizations. He delivered eleven commencement addresses at various school exercises throughout the state.

Lodges and Ministers meetings split honors, both calling upon Pacific's Prexy seven times for speeches. Five addresses were delivered before Boy Scout organizations. two bfore Parent-Teachers clubs, and one before a Community club. IN CALIFORNIA All of these speeches, with the 1 sure did you know that, Mary Im crazy about you, Jack was startled for a moment at the question. Well, I wasnt sure exactly.

1 didn't know. But now that I do know It makes a difference. You see, Jack, ever since you told me about your father Ive been thinking about you. The son of a Can tor. 1 can't get you out of my mind.

Maybe ItB better that yon did get me out of your mind, Jack spoke harshly and began viciously modeling a hugs, red mouth around his lips. Maybe it would be better If I got you out of my mind Yudelson, and everything he said well. It gave me a different slant on things. I can see things now 1 didnt see before. Oh, I knew they were there, all right, but they never bothered me.

They seemed so far away. But suddenly theyve become important. I understand them better." You mean Mary began. I mean the difference between you and me. Dont you see? Yudelson and me Dillings and you well, were pretty far apart.

You stand for certain things, and I stand for others. I saw it as soon as I talked to Yudelson. I knew it bnt I didnt bother about It that day Dillings that day he didnt want to talk to me. It wasnt all just because of you, Mary, be didnt speak It was me! 1 didnt belong. But Im not like he Is.

Tm not like Dillings, Mary defended herself. Maybe not, bnt youre not like me. Oh, I know, he held np his hand In a warning gesture as Mary started to speak. I know what you think. Im a rough diamond.

Youll take hold of me and polish me, and make me like you. Well, you cant! I tell you, you cant! All my life Im going to be just what I am. And you're going to be just what you are. You cant do it! Jack buried his head in bis arms and sighed brokenly. Then why did yon say yon loved me, Jack, she said slowly.

For a long time Jack made no answer. Finally he raised his head, and there were tears Id his eyes Do you really want to know?" hla voice cams faintly. Yes," Mary nodded. All right then, HI tell you," Jack straightened up, his muscles tense, hts breath coming quickly. I'll tell you.

Because I couldnt help it Thats why. Well, then, Mary questioned. But love means marriage, to me, Jack continued, and marriage means a home and kids. I Td like to have a kid like you a little boy but Td want him to be like you, Jacks voice softened, and his tension relaxed for the moment My God, Im crazy about you." Jack, Mary moved closer, would you would you mind saying that again?" No! I wont say It again! The old hardness came back. 1 wont say it again.

Ive got no right to say It at all. He got up stiffly and went over to the wardrobe, talking over his shoulder When Yudelson came and told me But he got no further. Mary ran and stood in front of him, blocking his way Jack, she said, come here. She led him back to his chair and sat down beside him. Now, listen, youve got to forget all this nonsense.

We wont talk about It any more. Let's Just talk about ourselves about you and me. She took his hand tenderly. I cant forget, Mary. I cant forget what Yudelson said, Jack moaned.

He told me my father Is sick. Tonight is the eve of the Day of Atonement. You cant un derstand what that means, Mary, to my people. Its the most solemn, the most holy day of the Jewish year. It's the great day of every Cantor's life its the day when be becomes the mouthpiece of the congregation.

He talks to God he talks to God not for himself, but for all those people come to worship in the synagogue. He asks for atonement for them. It Is he he who brings to God the burden of their tins. Can you understand?" Yes, Jack, I know," Mary nodded. "My father Is a Cantor.

For five generations the Rablnowltzes have been Cantors. For five generations they have called to God for the people of their syn agogue. The name Rabinowltz Is like a trade mark on Orchard Street All these years my father has sung for his people. And all those years before him his father and his father's father they all sang for their people. Now, my father is sick.

She realized now that there was something quite radically wrong and the best thing to do was talk the matter over had see what It was. The thought of Yudelson and his request to see Jack in person" Sashed across her mind. "Has it something to do with that man who was here just now she questioned Well, yes. In a way," Jack returned to the dressing table and began smearing the black make-up over his face. Whats the matter with him? What did he want?" Marys questions might have sounded almost Impertinent but she knew that the best thing to do was to draw Jack "Then why did you say you loved me, Jackr Into some frtn4 of conversation and allow him to confide his troubles.

It wasn't him he Just brought me a message a message from my father and mother. "Its not right! It's not right! Jack," Mary burst out Dont they know this is your opening night? Yon mustnt be disturbed this way. Oh, Jack, I just want to keep you away from everything from everybody until tonight Is over. This is your night the biggest night of your life! Sure, I know, Mary youre right, but but Jack turned away sadly. But what.

Jack? What Is the matter? I dont mean to be Inquisitive, but something terribles bothering you. What la It, Jack?" Mary-pleaded. Its what Yudelson that man that was here Its what he told me. Mary, he told me things that are making me hate myself, Jack faced about and gazed at Mary with the tragedy of despair written on his features. If youll tell me about It perhaps I can help you, Mary suggested softly.

1 don't think so, Mary. No one can help me now but myself. You you couldnt understand ray my feelings about this. Its something thats inside me born in me Oh, 1 dont know. And Im fighting it fighting It, I tell you God knows why! Yes.

I know why!" Jacks voice sobbed oat bis mental agony. But I I cant tell you, his voice dropped; his head bowed. Yes, 1 can naderstand those things, Jack," Mary was watching the boy intently, catching his mood, his feelings. Tell me some more. No, I tell you, I cant, Jack spoke roughly.

He wanted to talk, but there was something that restrained him a vague fear of revealing his Innermost sentiments to someone who might not understand. If 1 told you, youd hate me, too. No, Jack, 1 dont think so 1 dont think theres anything that could make me hate you." She stood silent, contemplating the boy before her. Another thought came to her mind. She picked at the ostrich plumes on her dress absently.

Finally she looked up shyly a strange attitude for Mary who usually decided what she wanted and then went after It In a direct manner. Jack, she asked gravely, did you when you said you loved me did you mean It? Who Wants to Be College Prexy? Dr. Knoles Gives 212 Speeches During 1927 This thing of being a college hind wpre speeches before exception of 17, were made in the state of California. Sixteen lectures were delivered in Honolulu at the teachers institute there and one was made before the Garrett Biblical Institute, in Chicagd while Dr. Knoles was attending a meeting of the Methodist board of education at that city. During the year, Dr.

Knoles speaking activities carried him from Yreka in the north to Chino in the south. Of course, comments Dr. Knoles, I deliver the same lecture many, many times. In fact, when I am asked to speak out of town, I send them a list of subjects on which I will speak, and they take their choice." Thousands of miles are covered by Dr. Knoles in connection with his speaking engagements.

Not one of the 212 speeches listed was made on the campus of the college and only a comparative few within the city of Stock-ton. Unfortunately for the completeness of the record, Dr. Knoles has kept no check upon the mileage covered, the hours spent in preparation, and the hours of nervous qualms, which anyone who han attempted a speech In public, knows must accompany that duty. And then, to do It 212 times in one year. Who said the life of a college president was a bed of roses? If your Purse or Vanity Px needs repairs, call on C.

If there are any who doubt this, all that they have to do Is spend a few minutes talking to Dr. Tully C. Knoles, president of the College of Pacific, on the subject.

The average American man, or woman for that matter, considers it bad enough to have to prepare and deliver a speech or a few remarks on some one notable occasion in a life time. But Dr. Knoles, in his capacity as college president, delivered 212 speeches in 1927. A little black date book has the record all set down in black and while. When Dr.

Knoles was asked how many times his speeches would stretch around the world if placed in manuscript form end to end, he merely smiled and remarked. Oh, no, that remains better unsaid. SERMON DEAD Sermons led the list according to the record. Dr. Knoles came close to averaging a sermon for every Sunday in the year.
