(Indicating satisfaction with the results of his efforts to bring peace between China and the Soviet in Manchuria, Secretary Stimson considered as closed tonight his dramatic attempt to mass public opinion of the world against war. The friendly reply of the Chinese government which is recognized by the United States to th secretary's appeal for peace arrived at the State Department late today, the Nanking government indicating that it had always desired peace. The Chinese reply was in sharp contrast to that of the Soviet government. The Soviet was reported to have forwarded to the French government an answer to the secretarys appeal, asserting the American communication could not be taken as a friendly act and constituted unjustifiable pressure SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 5.

(P) Only a remote hope for rain wasj given California by the United States weather bureau today, and that hope was a disturbance on the Pacific ocean 1800 miles west, several days distant from the coast and with many possibilities for a change that would prevent it reaching the mainland. The disturbance which it was hoped would bring heavy precipitation to thirsty California and which turned northward yesterday leaving only a light sprinkling scarcely measurable, was reported tonight spending itself with its center 400 miles west of Vancouver Island. Its effects were still felt along the Washington coast and southern British Columbia, where light showers were reported. The Oregon coast was reported foggy while clear skies ruled California. (rPi The lure of the Forty-Niners gold country of California, strong even in death, caused five deceased of the Parish family of flan Francisco to be interred today in the little graveyard of the historic mining town of Timbuctoo, 25 miles west of here. YREKA, Dec. 5. () The two fires reported burning last night near Happy Camp on Coon Creek had developed larger pro portions tonight, and had covered an area of four sections.
