7 UCLA put on probation for numerous violations MISSION Kan (AP) The NCAA citing numerous violations slapped a two-year probation on the UCLA basketball program Tuesday and ordered the Bruins to return their second-place trophy from the 1980 national collegiate championship UCLA which won 10 national basketball championships under coach John Wooden from 1964 through 1975 also will be barred from this seasons NCAA tournament The Bruins will be eligible for the 1983 tournament In addition the university has been told to disassociate one representative of its athletic interests from participating in any recruiting activities on behalf of the university in the future the NCAA said in a prepared news release The NCAA said UCLA already has taken such action against a second representative The release also said earlier penalties imposed by the Pac-10 Conference on the UCLA football program had been accepted by the NCAA Infractions Committee and no additional sanctions will be applied The conference penalty was related to violations of academic standards and forced UCLA to forfeit six 1977 football victories and barred the Bruins from bowl games following the 1980 season Earlier there had been speculation that even if UCLA were bared from the NCAA toummanent it would be allowed to play in the National Invitational Tournament but the NCAA statement said the team shall end its 1981-82 season with the playing of its last regularly scheduled in-season contest and the team shall not be eligible to participate in any post-season basketball competition during the first one year period of the probatation The earliest basketball violation cited by the NCAA occurred in 1977 two years after Wooden retired and was replaced by Gene Bartow Bartow coached for two years then was replaced by Gary Cunningham who coached the next two seasons Larry Brown was the Bruin coach for two years after that and Larry Farmer was named head coach prior to this season The violations include allowing basketball players to sell game tickets in excess of their face value free use of cars cash payments to basketball players lodging and meals for recruits relatives and providing reduced apartment rentals the NCAA said The violations primarily involved two enrolled student-athletes and two prospective student-athletes the NCAA said In accordance with policy the identities of athletes boosters and university employees involved in the investigation were not disclosed Certain violations in this case affected the eligibility of two student-athletes at the time they participated in lEWSiPILBT Sports Wed Dec 9 1981 D1 the 1980 NCAA Division I Basketball Championship the NCAA said Therefore the universitys performance records in the championship will be deleted the teams second-place finish in the final standings will be vacated and the university will be required to return the teams trophy and the ineligible student-athletes awards to the Association The Bruins hold national records with 10 NCAA championships and 60 NCAA tournament victories They lost to Louisville 59-54 in the 1980 championship game NCAA investigators did develop information concerning serious violations of NCAA regulations occurring in the universitys intercollegiate mens basketball program that involved two representatives of the universitys athletic interests Charles Alan Wright chairman of the Infractions Committee said in the news release Based primarily on those findings the committee believed that a significant penalty in basketball was appropriate and that institutional action should be taken against the involved representatives UCLA athletic director Bob Fischer wouldnt comment on the NCAAs action Tomorrow we have a press conference I have nothing to say until that time said Fischer It had been announced earlier in the day that a press conference would be held today Farmer was unavailable for comment but a member of the UCLA athletic department said he was certain that nobody involved with the school would say anything until the press conference Wooden also was unavailable for comment UCLA announced Tuesday prior to the NCAAs announcement that senior forward Tony Anderson was being reinstated to the basketball team as the result of a hearing before the NCAA Subcommittee on Eligibility appeals Anderson had been declared ineligible for intercollegiate competition on Nov27 It was reported earlier that a Bruins alumnus aUegedly subsidized an apartment for Anderson AP photo Former Laker Spencer Haywood fighting ring before Tuesday night's game at the for a loose ball with 'Kareem Abdul- Forum and announced plans to sue the Jabbar collected his 1 980 championship Lakers for a full share of the title money Haywood plans to meet Lakers at another court SKGIBQdUK cused him of not supporting him as a fellow Moslem and influencing the team to deprive him of a full playoff share The vote according to one Laker player was strongly against giving Haywood a full share but not unanimous Something like 9-2 he said Jerry Buss the Lakers owner said he is not concerned about Haywoods lawsuit since it only involves the players But it would be unfair for Spencer to come down too heavily on the Lakers Buss said The reason? Buss gave Haywood a new $600000 contract even after he was suspended since it had been promised earlier in the season Im still paying him Buss said One of the incidents that got the Lakers mad at Haywood is the famous tape-cutter scene following one of the games with the 76ers Haywood screamed at Brad Holland to give him the cutters Jim Chones then came to Hollands defense Now IVt years later the three are together again with the Bullets Holland and Chones were traded in the deal that brought Mitch Kupchak to the Lakers Then Haywood signed as a free agent Its ironic said Holland What goes around comes around Chones said Same people different situation That's the way life is Actually Holland said they get along I had forgotten about that incident" Holland said When I first saw Spencer here he came over and shook hands That incident is something that just happened on the spot It was not something that built up Brad and Spencer have been cool Chones said Holland did not play Tuesday but Chones and Haywood did Haywood starting at forward played 21 minutes and scored eight points with six rebounds Chones coming off the bench played 12 minutes with three rebounds and three points Both Chones and Haywood admitted this game meant a little more than the 81 other regular-season games It was the first time they were facing their old teammates Haywood said he felt a bit tense at the start I went out overanxious to do it" he said When I got it all together and was able to do what I wanted it was the fourth quarter and I wasnt in the game Thats life By Mike Braham Staff writer Shortly after Spencer Haywood played against his former team on one court Tuesday night he revealed he will meet them in another court After criticizing the Lakers for suspending him during the 1980 NBA finals Haywood now plans to sue them It was Haywood's first game at the Forum since the Lakers suspended him This time it was as a member of the Washington Bullets who made the Lakers work for a 102-98 victory And since he was excluded from the festivities after the Lakers won the NBA title he was given his championship ring in the visitors locker room shortly before the game Now I would just like to collect my money Haywood said I plan to sue for it Haywood is still seething over not being given a full share of the championship loot by his teammates who voted him only a quarter share Not even a years exile in Italy where he played basketball after the Lakers got rid of him and a new environment Washington where hes now started his last three games have tempered Haywoods acrimony His one season with the Lakers was a turbulent one and came to a head against Philadelphia when he was suspended by Paul Westhead then the coach The Lakers went on to win the title but the players decided Haywood was not deserving of a full share Haywood thinks otherwise Im going to find out who voted against me Haywood said Tuesday Everyone says they didnt vote against me but Im going to find out who it was Im going to go to court to find out who voted which way I'm going to sue the individuals involved Haywood said he is giving the Lakers the opportunity to pay him the full share before he begins legal action The deadline he says is within the next month The Laker organization has nothing to do with the matter Division of playoff shares is strictly a player matter Kareem Abdul-Jabbar the Lakers captain seemed surprised when asked to comment on Haywoods threatened legal action He said that? Abdul-Jabbar responded So what Much ado about nothing" Abdul-Jabbar was one of the players most criticized by Haywood Haywood ac PUBLIC NOTICE NEWS-PILOT 53579 NOTICE OF TRUSTEES SALE FORECLOSURE No 59118 On Wednesday December 30 1981 at 11:00 AM TRANS-AMERICA TITLE INSURANCE COMPANY a California corporation as duly appointed Trustee under and pursuant to Deed of Trust recorded July 28 1977 as instr No 77-820014 of Official Records executed by: JESUS MARRON a widower as trustor in the office of the County Recorder of Los Angeles County State of California WILL SELL AT PUBLIC AUCTION TO HIGHEST BIDDER FOR CASH (payable at time of sale in lawful money of the United States) at: the front entrance to the building located at 8487 West Third Street Los Angeles CA 90048 all right title and interest conveyed to and now held by it under said Deed of Trust in the property situated in said County and State described as: The northeasterly 50 feet of the northwesterly 112 feet of that portion of Block 290 of the Maclay Rancho Ex-Mission of San Fernando in the City of Los Angeles Book 37 Page 5 et seq of miscellaneous records in the office of the County Recorder described as follows: Beginning at a point in the northwesterly line of said Lot distant southwesterly along said northwesterly line 126 feet from the most northerly comer of said Lot thence southwesterly along said northwesterly line 126 feet thence southeasterly parallel with the northwesterly line of said Lot 69193 feet thence northeasterly parallel with said northwesterly line 126 feet thence northwesterly parallel with said northeasterly line 69193 feet to the point of beginning The street address and other common designation if any of the real property described above is purported to be: 13014 Osborne Street Arleta California 91331 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation if any shown herein Said sale will be made but without covenant or warranty express or implied regarding title possession or encumbrances to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said note(s) advances if any under the terms of said Deed of Trust fees charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust for the amount reasonably estimated to be: $3219067 The beneficiary under said Deed of Trust heretofore executed and delivered to the un-derslgned a written Declaration of Default and Demand for Sale and a written Notice of Default and Ejection to Sell The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property la located Date: December 2 1981 TRANSAMERICA TITLE INSURANCE COMPANY as said Trustee By JOVITO BAYAN Assistant Secretary Authorized Signature TRANSAMERICA TITLE INSURANCE CO PO BOX 48709 Bicentennial Station Los Angeles CA 90048 (213) 655-3000 Pub: Dec 9 16 23 1981 TV Intellivision Fun!
