PUBLISHED TUESDAY AND FRIDAY BY THE STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA VOL VII NORMAN OKLAHOMA TUESDAY NOVEMBER 12 1912 NO 15 STUDENT COUNCIL HOLDS MEETING HEAVY TEXANS DEFEAT SOONERS SOOIIERS VS OKLAHOMA AGGIES Aggies Coming to Norman Saturday Confident of Winning in Good Condition and a Great Game is Expected Dope on Teams About Equal Flushed with a string of victories over their opponents so far this season and confident of winning from the Sooners the state championship the Oklahoma Aggies come to Norman Saturday for one of the hardest games of the Sooner schedule The one ambition of football enthusiasts at the Aggie school has been to defeat the University and this year the showing of the Farmers indicate that they are going to come nearer their goal than ever before As to the comparative strength of the two teams but little can be ventured The Aggies beat Arkansas 13 to 7 on their home grounds and that indicates a team far from weak In their last game two weeks ago the Aggies defeated Baker 33 to 13 So that as far as is concerned the two teams are not far from being evenly matched The Farmers have had a light schedule and have arranged everything so as to be at their best on the 16th They have not had a game for two weeks and so most of the men ought to be in good condition Although in the past they have never crossed the Oklahoma goal line the Aggie students are coming to Norman in large numbers expecting to see the feat accomplished next Saturday And while the condition of the Sooner team will not be definite ly known until they return from Houston this evening the Sooners are equally as sure that it will be same old in the annual contest Saturday So a great game is The Council Met Saturday Morning and Transacted Much Business Some Important Movements Set On Foot The Student Council met Saturday morning and transacted much business A large part of this was hearing committee reports and the appointment of various committees to look after matters caiming the attention of the Council The committee having in charge the preparation of a plan for the basis of awarding a medal to the best all-around student in the University was unable to make a full report and so the committee was continued and instructed to report back at the next meeting This medal was offered by an Oklahoma City firm The Student Council is to devise some plan whereby the best rounded student may win this each year The problem of determining the credit that various student activities and scholarship is to receive is a most troublesome one It was felt that some action should be taken concerning the situation at the gym The fixtures in the shower room are in bad shape and it seems that under existing conditions the situation is not liable to improve Moreover it was deemed important that the football men should have more consideration especially in the matter of supplying them with fresh wholesome towels each day This will be taken up with the proper authorities A number of problems covering 'uch subjects are: the student ticket the University Magazine the Umpire and the like were discussed but no action whatever was taken If the students have any idea concerning these matters which jieems to them desirable to be considered by the Council they should tell some member thereof or ask the privilege of presenting the view to the body The function of the Council and its reason for being is to ascertain student sentiment on all matters of student interest Do not keep your views to yourself and then condemn the Council because they are not mind readers Looking to the future one of the most important acts taken Saturday was to set a definite and regular weekly meeting time In the future the Council will be in session every Thursday evening from 7:30 till its business is transacted It has proved absolutely necessary to have a regular meeting time Meeting at the special call of the president as it has been doing has proved unsatisfactory and the Council now finds itself loaded with back work Vesmirevski and he was unable to play Tackle Bowler of A and Ilott of Oklahoma were both retired during the game with wrenched knees Oklahoma scored in the first two minutes of play A won the toss electing to defend the south goal Reeds kicked off to the 30-yard line where Kern fumbled and Ambrister recovered Line bucks carried the ball to the 20-yard line where the Farmers held and Courtright dropping back to the 25-yard line kicked a goal from placement Score Oklahoma 3 A 0 Later in the same quarter after Courtright had missed a place kick from the thirty-five yard line A put the ball in the scrimmage on their twenty yard line and rushed it down the field and a thirty yard gain by Bowler followed by a series of short gains and capped by a perfect forward pass Beasley to Montgomery netted a touchdown Higginbotham kicked goal Score: A 7 Oklahoma 3 The second quarter was fought as gamely as the first with the advantage mostly with the Sooners After A had kicked twenty-seven yards from behind their own goal line Oklahoma failed to gain materially' and Courtright negotiated another place kick from the twenty-five yard mark Score: A 7 Oklahoma 6 A little later a bad pass from Spear prevented Courtright from making good another place kick A scored in the third quarter Owen had begun to relieve his tired regulars and send in substitutes but they could do little to stop A Straight rushes carried the ball down the field and on ten yard line Kerns hit for one and two and then circled end for eight and touchdown Higginbotham kicked goal In the last quarter the Farmers scored one touchdown when Mort-gomery circled right end for twenty-five yards after Bateman had advanced the ball by a twenty-yard return on a kick and thirty through tackle A forward pass Bateman to Montgomery was the direct cause of the last touchdown Higginbotham kicked both goals Score: A 28 Oklahoma6 The lineup: A Montgomery right end Bowler right tackle: Lyles right guard Cushman center Miller left guard Lambert left tackle Everett left end Kerns quarter Bateman right half Higginbotham fullback Bell (c) left half Oklahoma: Clark (c) right end Hott right tackle Berry right guard Spears center Meacham left guard Clark left tackle Holland left end Ambrister quarter Reeds right half Rogers fullback Courtright left half Substitutes A Spake for Kerns Kerns for Spake Washington for Everett Beasley for Bateman Bateman for Beasley Parker for Higginbotham Higginbotham for Parker (Continued on Page Eight) Plunges of A Backfield Batter Light Line to Texas 28 Sooners Courtright Bowler and Montgomery Star in the Memorable Struggle Houston Tex Nov (Special) Outweighed but not outgamed and fighting gallantly against heavy odds the Oklahoma Sooners lost the football championship of the Southwest to Texas A here Monday afternoon by the apparently one-sided score of 28 to 6 But the dfference represents largely the difference in weight and that was eighteen pound to the man The punting toe of the brilliant Courtright for two quarters held the husky Farmers within reach of the battling Oklahomans Two minutes after the kickoff he drove a goal from placement squarely between the goal posts from the twenty-five yard line and after A had scored 7 points on a touchdown and resulting field goal in the same quarter he came back with another place kick in the second making the score 7 to 6 In the same quarter he had another opportunity from the 20-yard line but pass to Ambrister was bad and the little quarter had little time to right the ball for Courtright to kick Consequently the ball went low Had he made it the story might have been different But that was ever present Had Owen owned another dozen men to send in when his wearied team began to weaken before the smashing attack of the big tackles and backs he might have won But the third quarter found the Sooner athletes wearied and broken and the line could no longer hold And had not Reeds fumbled on A M's 10 yard line a Sooner score would almost certainly have been made Bowler the Ft Worth giant the game for A It was his brilliant running from tackles and back plays that swept the ball down the field for the first touchdown Giant in frame the Sooners could not stop his big body until he had covered ten twenty and thirty yards But Bowler was far from being alone and even after his retirement with an injured knee there were plenty of stars Kerns once more ran his team in veteran form and it was his three plunges at the line and an end run that caught his apponents napping that scored the second Farmer touchdown great work at end was a noticeable feature A ends both played spectacular ball in handling forward passes tossed them by Kerns and Bateman Two passes were direct causes of the touchdowns For Oklahoma Courtright Reeds Ambrister Rogers Clark and Holland played great football The two ends did beautiful work and could seldom be boxed Reeds outpunted his opponents until too tired to keep up Six thousand witnessed the game West End park being packed Just prior to the game the collision of a street car with the van carrying the A players injured Fullback Big Crowd Attends McConnell Meeting Packing the Methodist church to its capacity over 1500 people said farewell to McConnell Jr of Cedar Rapids Sunday night Mr McConnell is an I graduate A who has decided to enter the missionary field in India and who is being liberally supported by the local A Secretary Williams of the A presided The defeated in the election by a small majority Says Harvard Has Nothing on Charles Lee Smith who was a student here last year is now enrolled at Harvard In a recent letter to Secretary Newby he says
