Sooners Suit Up For Big Senate Shindig THE DAILY OKLAHOMAN Thursday, May 3, 1979 By John Greiner The Oklahoma Senate could have fielded a pretty tough football team by Oklahoma standards Wednesday as it welcomed Heis- Trophy winner Sims and some of his of Oklaho- teammates for a vawiffecial tribute. Senators set part of Wednesday's session aside to honor Sims, the OU team and coach Barry Switzer for the accomplishments and recognition brought to the state. Sims was presented with a special resolution, praising his achievements on the gridiron during the past football season. He was accompanied by All-America guard Greg Roberts, tight end Victor Hicks, quarterback Thomas Lott and running back David Overstreet. Gene Howard. of Switzer told senators he was proud of the recognition given to Sims and the OU team. He said that in the last eight years, the OU team has had a record of 84 wins, eight losses and tw-o ties, a record that has provided Oklahomans with some pretty exciting football. After the short ceremony, the Senate, which had named Wednesday "Billy Sims recessed for a reception in the Senate lounge wtith the OU players and their coach. Senators also provided a cake which was cut by Switzer, Sims and Senate President Pro Tempore Gene C.

Howard, D-Tulsa. Howard said Sims, who still has a year of eligibility left, already has accomplished achievements that are legendary. Sims not only became one of the few juniors to win the Heisman Trophy, he also was a consensus All American, Walter Camp Foundation Player of the Year, Citizens Savings Athletic Foundation Player of the Year, The Associated Press and United Press International College Football Player of the Year, Sport Player of the Year, Big Eight Of- fesnive Player of the Year, recipient of the Chic Harley Award from the Columbus Touchdown Club, the Davey O'Brien Award and the Tulsa Tribune Jack Charvat Award.
