Prune them now. Remove all leaves and clean up thoroughly the week following. Any time from now on you can prune your fuchsias. Cut to shape but cut them back as far as you can because the more new growth you get next year the more flowers. When your lawn has a chance to dry out enough to walk on, rake in LIGHTLY a dressing of well-aged manure and a good compters plant food. Then go easy en the plant food so you don't burn the grass — water it in thoroughly. There's nothing like growing your own tomatoes. You can start seed indoors now— or take it easy and wait until your California Association of Nurserymen member has the started seedlings for you. Swiss Chard is one of our most rewarding vegetable crops. Plant seed periodically and you'll have good eating nearly all year in most of the State. Tip on growing azaleas In areas where azaleas are native, there is a soil microorganism called "michorizza," a kind of fungus, which attaches Savings Bonds through auto- actually feeds the plants by transferring nutrients from the soil and air. It's a kind of parasite in reverse. So far, efforts to reproduce this michorizza and develop it as an inoculant for azaleas have not proved out. But many successful azalea growers believe that the microorganism eventually builds up in azalea soil, thus accounting for the fact that some azaleas grow strong and healthy, no matter what. The tip is this: if you have one or a few azalea plants that seem always to do well, lift a handful of soil from under the thriving plants and mix it in with any new azalea soil being prepared. You may also mix it in mulch being spread around other plants.
