Sbo Fails to Beat the Record A Largt Attendance and a Fair Day's Sport Pearl Jennings, Mattie Rapture, Fre ciana, Water Lily, Topsj aud Cochran Carry Off the Honors. The meeting of the Coney Island Jockey Club this Fall has been lib rally patronized by the public The attendance for tho past five days baa probably been larger than any other fire cousocutive days since the raco meetings havo been held at the She ops head Bay track. There waa a big crowd on hand yesterday, although tho programme was anything bat an attractive one. Tho most important eveut on tho card was the race for tbe Champion Timo Stakes. The track was In excellent condition, and aa the horses were not required to carry a very heavy weight, some well known turfman ventured the opinion thai they would run tbe mile very close to the best time on record.

Little Mincli acted badly at the post, but when tho Hag fell ho ran true, and showed plenty of speed, but could not stay the distauoe at the fast pace that Aranza was carrying him along at. The official time for the distance was first quarter, 25 seconds half wile, 49.1f seconds; three quarters, one mile, 1:43. The betiing during tbe day was quite heavy, although, as a rule, tbe poncllera received the money ia small amounts. The combination bookmakers are said to have lost heavily, and several horse owners were reported to have Bought them for large amounts. None of th mutual pool dividends were very largo, although In one or two instances they paid nearly $50.

The first race paid $47.80 second, $10.80 third, $14.25 fourth, fifth, $a95, and Birth, $43.80. Of the niucteen horsetj entered for tbe opening dash at three quarters of a mile tho following named horses came to the post Fellowplay, Charley Kempland Marsh Bedon, Nfmrod, Rica, lieu Thompson, Burch. Caramel, Itaska, Shenandoah, Eva 8, Pearl Jeuuiugs and Sauuterer. The betting on this event was not heavy as the field was so and several of the horse evenly matched at the weights that the talent did not venture to plunge on the race. Fellow play who was 'piloted by McLoughliu was a Blight favorite, Rfca with Meaton up was second choice, Burch, Eva Pearl Jennings and Sauuterer sold at even prices.

The others wero bunched aud sold as a field. There was a long delay at the starting post canned by the JocSeys who were anxious to get a good send off. Mr, Caldwell, however, managed fo send them away when the horses were all well up aud lu motion. Sauuterer was the only ouo who did not go off in the bunch. Rica was the first to take the track with Ben Thompson aud Cuarley Kempt aud her closest attendants.

Fellow play made a bid tor the lead al ng the backstretch, but lilea outran him and she led to tbe head of the stretch. When they entered tho homestretch Pearl Jennings and SUenandoah both came up very titrong. but Pearl Jennings outlasted tho others and she won cleverly by a length aud a half Rica got second place by a head; Shenandoah was third and Charley Kempland was a good fourth. Will the best time on record at a mile, be beaten to day, was the question generally asked as tha four horses went to tho starting post for the Champion Time Stakes. The entrance was $50 each, play or pay.

with $1,000 added, but if the race was ruu in faster Urns than 1:40 and an addition $1,000 would be paid to the horse making the recoid. The four contestants were Maiuuiunist, ridden byCoukling; Arausa, withOnley la the saddle; Gano, was piloted by J. Donohue, and Gar rlsoa was up on Little Minch. In the pools Aranxa had tbe call aud sho was the favorite, while Mammonfst and Little Minch sold at even pnees. There was a long delay at tho starting post as Starter Caldwell was anxious to get tho four horses ofl on dead even terms, so that they might have an equal chance to win tho raco and at the same time beat the record.

Mammoulst made bis appearauoe in Appleby Ji Johnson's colors, aud it was understood that they had purchased the Uorsofrom R. R. Owltigs. The flag finally fell to a good start. Little Minch was the first to show in front, but Atanza soon shot to the iront and sho made tbe pace closely followed by Little Miuch, Mam.

monist and Gano. They ran without cbauge in those positions until they entered the homestretch, Aranza came up next the rails at a fast pace, but she was beginning to tire. Conkliug began lo urge Mam monist and he soon overhauled Little Miuch and after a close struggle passed him. Aranza held her lead to th eud, and she won by nearly two lengths Mammoulst beat Little Miuch a neck. The time was For the welter handicap sweepstakes, at a mile andf furlong, there were six starters.

Gentlemen riders re ceived au allowance of seven pounds, but the horse ownors evidently believed that the professional was better at tho weights, and there were no gentlemen jocks in tbe saddle. Billy Hayward rode Nltot, Laare land rode his own horse Arsenic Warren Lewis wai piloted by J. Barrett Mattie Rapture had Fitzpatrlck up Farewell was ridden by Carroll, and Mr. Pickwick by W. Donohue.

Mattie Rapture and Arsenic wera equal favorites in the auction pools, while Mr. Pickwick and Farewell also sold as choices, and the other two sold as a Bed. There was no delay as the post, and they all moved off together on nearly equal terms. Farewell was first to take the track, but soon gave way to Arsenic, who led past tho quarter post. Along the backstretch Warren Lewis beudodthe bunch, and hehadtneadvantage as they passed the bolf, but on tbe far turn Farewell cama again, and she led Into the homestretch.

At the seven furlong post Fitzpatrick brought up Mattie Rapture, and he boou passed Farewell, who was apparently very tired. Hay ward attempted to pass Farewell with Nftot, but tbe rider or the former crowded him into the rails, and ho was compelled to pull his horse up. Mattie Rapture won easily by a length and a half Farewell finished second, two lengths from Nitot, The time was After the jockeys had weighed iu Hayward mado a comp aint of foul riding to tho judges againBt Carroll. The judges listened to Hayward's side of the story, and they then sent for Carroll. The result was that second placo was given to Nitot and third place to Mr.

Pickwick. The foul was apparent to all who watched tha horses, and the only question for the judges to consider was wbetftor it was done intentionally. Six two year olds appeared in answer tu the bell to call the hursts to the post tor the fourth race, at three quarters of a milo with selling allowances The runners wero Unrest, Bahama, Preciana, Error, Coral and Frank Rnnyon. J. Donohue had tbe mount on Preciatia, and she carried the money for the plungers, although in the auction pools Unrest, with Onley up, sold at even prices with her.

Bahama and Error also had their supporters, while Coral and Frank Ruuyon, who was riddeu by Church, sold at small figures. When the start was effected Coral jumped off with tho lead, with Unrest second, Error third and Preciana next. Thu last uamod went through tho field like a flash, aud before they hud gone a hundred yards she was along Fide of Coral. These two raced together to the head of the homestretch, whoro Preciana drew away and won easily by four lengths. Unrest came up strong at the finish, and she caine in second, nearly three lengths in front of Error.

The distance was covered in The winner is a very fast filly for a short distance with a light weight on her back. She was entered to be sold for $1,100 aud shs was bid up to $1,605, at which price she was bought in by her owner. Mr. Daly, however, did not have to stand tho loss, as tho custom oi late has been for tbe party who bucks the winner of a solving race to protect ihe horse when offered for sale and to pay the difforeuce from his winuiugs iu caao ha is bid up above his entered soiling price. There is generally au understanding to this effect between the owner of the horse and the backer before tbe race.

The fifth race was for three year old fillies, with winning penalties aud maiden allowances. There were but four fillies entered and they faced the starter's flag. Water Lily was riddeu by Meaton, tho Macaroon dam Bijou filly by McKenny, Freda by McLoughlin and Economy by Blaylock. Tho raco on paper loused like a certainty for Mr. Kelso's filly and, of course, she waa mado a big favorite by the betters.

The peneilera would only lay 3 to 5 against her. The other three soUT at nearly oven prices in the auction pools. To a good start Water Lily was firataway, but Meaton held her back and allowed tho Btdluda filly to take tho track, and she mode the running to the half mile post. On tho far turn Water Lily moved up and joined the Belinda filly and the two ran lapped to the head of the stretch. Here tho Belinda filly fell behind and Economy came up, but could not roach the favorite, who was running under a Btiff pull and sho won with the greatest ease by a length.

Economy was second ten lengths from Freda, who was pulled up. The time was 1:59. The handicap Bweops takes, at a mile and three furu longs, was the sixth event on tho programme. There wero ten horses entered, but Corrigan's W. R.

Wood ward, who was looked upon as a sure winner, waa withdrawn. The contestants were Bondholder, Wallen see, Monitor, Nettle, Heel aod Toe, Ten Strike, Royal Arch, Topsy and Free Gold. Monitor, who was ridden by Blaylock, was selected by the talent as the probable winner, and he was made the favorite, although a number of tho starters were belioved to have a chance and they were well supported. Heel aud Too and TopBy had a number ot followers, and Nettle and Royal Area carried considerable money. The field was large, but the start nevertheless was good.

Ten Strike was slightly in front of the others when tbe flag fell, but Royal Arch soon shot to the front, and he made the ruunlng closely pressed by Bondholder. Along the backstretch old Monitor took third placo, and he struggled to head the leaders, but Ruyal Arch and Bondholder held their positions until they straightened out for home, when the reir division closed up and May nard called on Topsy, The mare resounded and Bhe ran gamely and soon overhauled the leaders, and waa first at the winning by a length. Hel and Toe was given second place aud Monitor third. The time waa 2:23. It appeared to most people ou the stand as though Monitor had won place by a good half length frum Heel and Toe, but tho judges reversed them and the public accepted their decision without a murmur.

The judges wore asked about the decision aud they stated that Heel and Too got tho place by a neck. Tho steeplechase over tho full course did not prom ise to prove a very exciting contest, as there were but four horses entered, and only three of thotn started. Bonero, who waa withdrawn, was sold to Jimmy McCormack, of Brighton Beach. Burke Cochran, who was ridden by Pat Meauey, was favorite over tho field. Disturbance was second choice and George McCullougbj was at a long price.

Disturbance led at first, but at tho sixth jump he gavo way to Burko Cochran, who showed the way for the remainder of the distance, although Disturbance kept well up until after they had tuk iii the water jamp for the second time, when ho Bulked and fell back. George McCullough then moved and took second place and hi'ld it to the end. Burke Cochran won easily by eight lengths, with nearly ten lengths between second and third.
