furnishing the County Hospital and Alms House It is expected that the establishment will be ready for occupancy about the first of November The Index understands that a number of San Bernardino sportsmen who staked money upon their favorites at the Los Angeles races chanced to get upon the losing side but by the assistance of friends they were enabled to raise funds sufficient to return home A highly interesting feature of the Fair proceedings Saturday evening last was the presentation of an elegant buggy to raider one of the prize babies The buggy was of different design but fully as elegant and costly as that awarded for a first premium on Friday afternoon It was a tribute well bestowed The Anaheim Gazette comes to the rescue of the fire boys of that place with the following explanation which it must be allowed is valid: "The disadvantages under which the Anaheim boys labored were many and various First two of the original team could not attend and their places were tilled by "green" men second only 100 pounds less weight was allowed them although the team numbered only nine men as against twelve men in the competing companies third their wagon was a clumsy wind-catching affair and was actually harder to pull than either of the other wagons although it nominally weighed 100 pounds less fourth the Anaheimers ran dressed ae firemen not as acrobats As the EXPRESS says the winners wore seven-ounce slippers and the Anaheim team wore seven-pound boots The moral to be drawn from all this is that had the Anaheim team been coached equipped and trained as their opponents were they would have been the victors Instead of the vanquished" 06'1211 r-Imi 9 T116 poultry department 14 Agri cultural Ptuk did credit to the enterprise of our popular breeder Mr "Hoodlums and Hoodlumism" was one of the most brilliant and eloquent discourses I have heard for many years His large audience was held with intense interest throughout the lecture and as the reverend gentleman speaks without notes or manuseript be is free to give full force to impassioned eloquence and present his subject and points in the most pleasing style The speaker adopted as the foundation of his remarks the language of the Jewish iHmdlum children who ran out on the streets and derisively exclaimed to the Prophet Elisha as he was passing by soon after the ascension of Elijah in a chariot of fire: "Go up thou bald-bead go bp thou which occasion the good prophet cursed them in the name of the Lord and two she bears came out of the wood and tore forty and two children A terrible retribution for their display of hoodlumism The Doctor discoursed loran hour On the origin causes practices and remedies for hoodiumism exhibiting a familiarity with this terrible blight upon society such as an eight years' residence with close in1 vestigation in San Francisco would give and a depth of thought and I consideration of the remedies truly gratifying to the listeners Doctor Cunningham is excelled by few if any pulpit orators on the Pacific Coast and is rapidly building up here a large congregation of earnest adherents and friends of himself and the Presbyterian Church which is now demanding a much larger room for its services I would say to churchgoers and others who have not heard the Doctor's lectures that they are missing a rich intellectual treat when they fail to bear him
