One thing la sure: We can not, in any true sense, be followers ot Jesus Christ unless we accept tbe whole Bible, and especially the Old the Infallible Word ol God. Jesus Christ staked His whole gospel on the truth of the Old Testament. He put himself on trial before Moses and tbe Prophets: "If ye believe not his writings" (meaning those of Moses) how oan ye believe my words 7" He represents Abraham, the Patherof all believers, speaking frem Paradise to a lost bouI and says If they have not Msses and the Prophets, yet would they not believe though one rose from the dead. How, go, if yontwill, and proclaim yourself a Christian, and yet not a believer in the Old Testament The SoriptureB tell us not only whenoe and what we are bnt whither we are going; of the judgment to come; such as local players desire. done as happens to most interests. At the time of "the Morphy excitement" the oities brick, and it looks more like a warehouse than a store. It Ib for temporary use, and will probably be used as a warehouse when the firm BhaU have entered a handsome building. But when I speak of the curiosities of buildings, the entire work of rebuilding Chicago, which is going on with marvelous rapidity, is a curiosity and wonder which must be seen to be understood and appreciated. There Is plenty of WOBE FOB WOBKMEN, skilled in the various branches of building, and will be for three years to come.

From four to six weeks ago mechanics and laborers came here in large numbers from the oountry and neighboring cities, and many ef them, being then unable to find employment, returned home. They came too soon, for new briok and other materials for building could not be had, and, beside, the Spring had been very backward, and new enterprises could not be commenced till tho frost was out and the ground fully settled. Foundations are now going in everywhere; briok and lumber are coming In liberally by railway the river is filled with vessels delivering materials, and the demand for good mechanics of all kinds, teams and laborers, is becoming very active. Masons get from $3.50 to $4.50 per day; the plasterers got $4, and have just struck for $5 and get it. Hod carriers, $2.60 to $2.75.

They now demand $3. Painters, $2.76 to $3.50 laborers, $2 to carpenters, $3 to stone outtera, $5 for eight hours' labor. Teams, with drivers, and teams in great demand at $5 to $6. Workmen are in demand for building everywhere. As the factories and other establishments whioh furnished employment for females have not yet got into operation again, there are many women wanting work, and it will bo some time before they will find it.

In the meantime the Belief Sooiety will have to provide for such aB have no one to provide for them. BEAT, ESTATE TBANB ACTIONS are lively, both in the heart of the city and in the suburbs. Property is generally sold by the frontago, at so much per foot. There are good investments for capitalists who have faith in the future of Chicago. The following summary of the transactions of a week will give an idea of the amount of real estate which changes hands in this city that shuts the mysteries of the future from mortal vision; unveil oelesttal worlds, and pour a clear, steady month at farthest.

Presently we shall see the people on Sunday thronging the parks and filling cars and steamboats on their way to the rural districts. Thousands of them work from early morning until late evening on six days of the week. They have bnt one day for rest and recreation. Many of them are unable to find that recuperation in their homes and are sorely tempted to seek it in the open air. We do not propose to discuss the propriety or impropriety of their yielding to the temptation, except to say that tfcese outdoor pleasures are essentially innocent and do not interfere with the religious observance of Sunday.

They prevent nobody going to church who inclines to go. As to those who will not go to church, they are no better off lounging and sleeping in private or pnblic houses of the city than enjoying themselves in the parks and the suburbs. Of course the latter pursuit is pronounced abominable by rigid Sabbatarian censors. Sunday passengers by boat and rail are described as following the highway to perdition, and the whole class of excursionists and pleasure takers on the first day of the week are contemplated in the attitude of outcasts. Just here occurs the other Sunday question Is wholesale and extravagant denunciation judicious Is it not wiser to accept facts as they are and to make the best of them The question is not, Shall people enjoy themselves on Sunday That they certainly will and do.

The pertinent inquiry is, Should not the shrewd Christian evangelist, the intelligent religious teacher, turn the Sunday habits of the people to good account 1 This can be done, not by indiscriminate condemnation of their amusements, but by improving and refining their Xlnholoi's Introductory Sermon. seemed largely transformed into communities U1IKUU1CM UiMJ VUO glOOmy gravJ, uKua of the glory far down Into endless ajeB. If the Democrats wish to keep Grant in power they can do so. If they wieb. to reform the Administration of tho Government and restore honesty, patriotism, liberality, and high principle to their ancient control in our national affairs, they can do so. If they prefer to keep Grant in power, they will nominate and support a straight Democratic ticket. If they resolve to rescue the country from corruption, lawlessness, and oppression they will stand by Horace Greeley, the candidate of the Cincinnati Convention.

Oan there be any doubt which side of this alternative honest andpatriotlo Democrats ought to adopt7 From the Times, Administration. A TBIBUTE TO THE LIBEEAL CONVENTIONS ALSO SEVEBAL OONUNDBUMS. There is no doubt that a considerable proportion of the men who went to Cincinnati were sincere in their purposes. Some wont because they believed the meeting would be what it was announced to be, one for consultation between true Bcpublicans, and not a device for the betrayal of the Republican party into the bauds of tho Others wont becauso they boltovod in the existence of real causes for dissatisfaction with the Republican party, from which they were willing to seek a remedy in an independent nomination of a man of distinguished abilities and character. Both classes have been deeply disappointed.

The question now is, cannot they, and those who sympathize with them, be again attracted to tho Republican party 7 Can we not ieavo the Greeley and Brown ticket, on the morrow of the Philadelphia Convention, with no support but such as it may derive from the greedy place hunters, who, like the candidates, deseit the party because they cannot extort from it tho power and influence they are unfit to exercise The Times then soundly lectures Congress for making a portion of the Eepubliean party disatisfled with the Bepublican party. It Bays if Congress reforms things all will be well; if not, not; and concludes a lecturing leader as follows Mr. Greeley Ib as much the candidate of tbe Democracy as if he had been directly nominated be them. It is in the power of Congress to do much within tho next four weeks to defeat the present achemei. It is also in their power to render the i3Bue a matter of serious doubt.

We beg them to make their choice promptly and in the From the World, to The deriding sycophante of Grant, whose scoffing amusement knew no boundB when Mr. Greeley's nomination was announced, are the first to feel the sobering influence of a little calculation and arithmetic Their smile (to borrow an apt expression from Mr. Schurz) has quickly turned sour upon their hps. They have discovered that Mr. Greeley's nomination has blunted the edge of their principal weapon against the Cincinnati movement.

They had intended t) decry it and bring it into Bopublioan disrepute by representing it as a mere side show and auxiliary of the Democratic party. But the leading nomination being such that tbe Democratio party is compelled to repudiate it, and to demand of their National Convention a strsightout Democratic ticket, the Grant organs suddenly find their whole store oi' smmunition wet and worthless. If the Cincinnati Convention had, "with malice aforethought" sot them selveB to repel Democratic proffers of support, they could not have done it more effectually than by putting ieeley8 Nomination The Peril and the Duty of the Democracy It is not seriously questioned in any quarter but that if Horace Greeley receives an endorsement at the hands of the Democratic party, Grant's defeat is certain, and Mr. Greeley's election equally sure. If the Democrats should determine to run a third candidate, General Grant will be re elected, in our opinion, for if under the3e circumstances Mr.

Greeley should remain in the field, and we regard this as extremely doubtful the Republicans who are now committed to the Cincinnati movement will look on all the encouragement it has received from leading Democrats as evidence of a sorry and shallow political trick, and will resent it, in the most effeetual way possible, by voting directly for Grant. This, in our judgment, is the political situation, and to the extent indicated the Democraoy are masters of it. The Grant party is confronted by a deadly peril, but it would be folly to ignore the fact that the position of the Democratic party is not free from grave danger. The vital isroes now before the country all hinge on the condition of the Southern States of the Union. The people of that section are was an inevitable reaction.

Chicago had ITS OBIGIN in an Indian trading poet. In 1804 a fort was built at this point to protect traders and settlors. It was 1837 by the time the population amounted to 4,170. From that time it began to grow. In 1850 the oity contained 29,963 Inhabitants; iu 1880, in 1871, 334,000 so that It has grown to be a large oity in about thirty years, and to rank next only to Now York and Philadelphia in Importance.

This was the result of natural advantages of having a fine harbor for Iako vessels and of being a great railroad centre. It was only natural that Chicago should become the metropolis of the WeBt. The wonder consisted in tho short time in whioh it attained that position. Some idea of the MAGNITUDE OP THE BUSINBSS done in Chicago may be formed from the following statement of tho business transactions of 1870 Wheat received, buahelB 1791,109 Corn received, buBhels 20,189,775 Total all grain reoolved, bushels 81,316,693 Floor manufactured, bbls 443,976 Grain shipments (equal to), bushels VPOJ HiKh. wtn.e3 manufactured, gallons 7,663,364 Hogs packed 9C3.0CJ Hogs received.

There are now 25 railroads centering in Chicago. THE BAPrb OEOWIH of Chicago was one of the wonders of modern times, and it was at tho same time ono of the causes that led to its destruction. At one time there were a great many frame buildings erected, and many briok ones of a paltry nature.

Certainly there wore also many very handsome and substantial buildings, and they, too, fell before the devouring element, in fact it wai the best portion of the city that was destroyed, but it was among the tinder box houses that tho fire gained the force that made it irresistible. Speaking of this, Bev. Mr. Collyer said, just after the fire We have had the experience of the whole world bark of ub, and yet, in building a great city and centre of civilization, we have given the work into tbe hands of, greedy real estate speculators, and have selfiBhly taken care of our own concerns." The wind was blowing a gale from the southwest, and tbe fire soon got beyond tho control of the firemen, sweeping everything before it the air itself becoming so hoatod that it ignited some buildings. They are ruled and robbed by adventurers, who are keptinascendenoy by Grant's administration, for personal and partisan ends. The first interest of the country is to reconcile the people of the two sections, and to bring about harmony between the two races at the South, who cannot too soon accept the fact that their future is identified with that of their section and of their common country. This should be the rightful duty assigned to the next administration.

If there be a man peculiarly qualified to lead in undertaking it, Horace Greeley is the man. He is nearer to the hearts of men who were Republicans before there were honors or offices to divide, than any other leader that can be named. His advice and counsel will be accepted and followed by the lately enfranchised citizens, because he was their fiiend, before it was ever dreamed that they could make any return for justice or for friendship. No man raised his voice earlier or more emphatically than he did, after the close of the war, against military executions, against the retention of political disabilities, against the prolongation of the hate and bitterness which civil war of necessity engendered, and in favor of the most complete amnesty for past offences. For these reasons Horace Greeley has now the ability to bring about the return of an era of good feeling, and the man who to give him the power to do so is an especial enemy of the South.

This is equally trae of a political organization. Just here comes in the danger to which the Democratic party is now exposed. The South has looked for years to this party as to a the only political organization they could trust to support its white citizens in getting back the rights they inherited and which are still withheld, although over seven years has passed since a single arm was raised in opposition to the supremacy of the Federal Government. The white citizens of the South, almost unanimous in fidelity to the Democratic party, find one of the most magnanimous and kindest heaTted of their sld opponents at the head of all that is best and most disinterested in the Republican tion of the Alabama difficulties.
