For Bronchitis "1 never realized the good of medicine so much aa 1 have In the laat lew months, dunug which time I have suffered intensely from pneumonia, followed by bronchitis. After trying various remedies without benefit, I began the use of Ayers Cherry Pectoral, and the effect has been marvelous, a single dose relieving me ot choking, and securing a good night's rest. X. Higginbotham, Gen. Store, Long Houhtain, Va. La Grippe Last Spring 1 waa taken down with la grippe. At times I was completely prostrated, and ao difficult was my breathing that my breath seemed as if confined in an Iron cage. I procured a bottle ot Ayers Cherry Pectoral, and no sooner had I began taking it than relief followed.

I could not believe that the effect would be so rapid." W. H.Williams, Cook City, 8. Dak. Lung Trouble For more than twenty-five years, I was a sufferer from lung trouble, attended with coughing so severe at times as to cause hemorrhage, the paroxysms lasting three or four hourf. I was induced to try Ayers Cherry Pectoral, and after taking four bottles, was thoroughly cured.

I can confidently recommend this medicine. Franz Hofmann, Clay Centre, Kans. AYERS Cherry Pectoral Prepared bv Dr. J. O.

Ayer Lowell, Ifua. Bold by .11 Price gl aix 5. Prompt to act, sure to cure tied couples such devotion It was edifying in the extreme. But today, Mr. Ward and I are theonly ones oi the sixteen who havent become detached by divorce.

On that trip, though, wa came very near detachment by drowning. We ware up in the Straits of San Juan de Fuca, on a little bit of a steamer which was all deck and no cabin we were invited guests of Callenders Minstrels going from Victoria to Seattle. I had male a bed on the rounding tops of two big trunks near the gunwale and was sound asleep when a sudden lurch threw me off into the water. It was midnight and that water was awfully cold. I gave a horrible screech as I went into the clammy waves and every time I came to the surface, I screamed again.

I heard them say keep up, were coming, and I shut my mouth and took a long breath and made up my mind to live if I could. But they couldnt find the oars for the small boat and I went down twice it seemed as if I went to the very bottom I had just finished saying my prayers and decided to die like a Christian, when they clutched me by the long curls I wore then and dragged me into the boat. People say death by drowping is blisefni but I hope to die some other way. Apparently, barring accidents, it will be a great many years before the animated and vigorous little woman, who ie a great walker and fond of exercise rather than excitement, has to make the acquaintance of the grim reaper. Let us hope so.

Hunt being the auctioneer. He brought the smiles to the young ladies faces when he would run the price of their Boxes up to and beyond the almighty dollar. It was a busy evening with the Common Council and without any expenditure of oratory they occupied nearly two hours with earnest work. The monthly reports of officers showed that only four arrests for drunkenness were made during February, and that forty-eight cords of wood were burned at the Electric Light and Power Works. E. O. Whitney applied for a license as a drain layer.

Bond.of John Grant as Street Commissioner was approved. An application for a city deed to the Tutbill property on River street was granted. MattersVelating to sidewalks od Chestnut avenue and to sewer on Washington street were referred. Ordinances fixing grades on Otis, Rigg, Franklvn and California streets were adopted. A liquorjlicense was granted to Sulll van Chace for the Iacific Ocean House, Councilman Lucas voting.

No. The yawning vacancy in the sidewalk on Mission Hill was a matter of com1 ment, and the Street Commissioner was ordered to notify property owners to put the sidewalks in proper condition for travel on the southerly side of Mission Hill. The gaps in the Eidewalk and macadam on Walnut avenue between Chesnut avenue-and Mission street were also ordered closed. The City Attorney was instructed to prepare Resolutions of Intention for the extension of Pacific avenue, and Cedar and Center streets to the depot grounds. The City Surveyor was also ordered to prepare a grade for Bay etreet.

After allowing the claims for February the Council adjourned for one week. A PACIFIC STAR. Carrie Clark Ward fs Troa to her Own California and Loves It Best of all. The Pacific Coast has a well defined and highly justifiable pride in the many talented, beautiful and popular women who have achieved success upon the dramatic and operatic stage of.the world, and who spent their childhood and girlhood among its big Sierras and giant redwoods or in its broad valleys. One of these, who has honored her profession and her native land by her charmfhg womanhood as well as by her dramatic talent is Carrie Clark Ward, the dimpled and dark-eyed star of the Ward 'Dramatic Troupe, now playing a weeks engagement in Santa Cruz.

Carrie Clark was scarcely out of her babyhood when her parents went to Virginia City, to live and that city wbs her home until her marriage, fourteen years ago, with James M. Ward, the character actor and comedian. Her girlhood was passed amid the palmy days of the Comstock; sfter she finished a grammar school course she was sent to a young ladies seminary in Sacramento, where she acquired numerous accomplishments, as well as a love for amateur theatricals. She was the star in the local amateur troupe whenever she went home to Virginia City for her yacation, and it was there that she was discovered by James M. Ward when he brought out to this coast the brilliant Madame Modjeska.

Carrie waB given her firsts professional engagement in the soubrette part of Nanine in Camille, and playedthrough the large cities of the coast with Modjeska. Before she had finished her first years engagement, however, she had captured Manager ard completely and became his wife. Since then, said Mrs. Ward, I have played almost continuously. I played soub-ette parts with Mrs.

D. P. Bowers when Tom Kean was her leading man, travelled one season as Rebekah in Saml of Posen, with M. B. Curtis, who has since won a notoriety not entirely theatrical; have played with McKee Rankin and W.

E. Sheridan; waa with Bobbie Gaylor a season and we played After Dark through the eastern cities with Corbett and Daly doing the sparring scene. And do you like the East better than California? was asked. No, indeed, nothing could win me from my love I or the coaBt. I have many dear friends in Eastern cities and I could do much better there financially, but I detest the climate.

You must have had numerous adventures, in your years of experience, said the Surf representative; I suppose, of course, you have been in one or more hotel fires and lost your diamonds. The dimple dimpled to its deepest depths and Mrs. Ward laughed heartily as she replied. Im afraid yon wont get a paragraph on either diamonds or divorces. Mr.

Ward and I dont advertise that way. I really did, between ourselves, lose my pet diamond bracelet in a hotel fire but I did not dare even mention it for fear theyd think it was that same old dodge. And then, for divorces. Twelve years ago we were playing in Oregon in a big company in which there were eight mar- PERSONAL SPLASHES. The Latch String Out at the Native Daughters 1'arlur. The Native Daughters held open meeting last evening and their frieDds responded with promptitude and pleasure to their cordial invitation to be present. The program was extended including some novel features. One was an original play, written by Mrs. Kate Cooper, entitled A Mock Initiation.

Some Native Sons, having possessed them-eelves surreptitiously of the most sacred secrets of the sister order, plan to have one of their number disguised and initiated, but they, in turn, are overheard by a Native Daughter, who, with her sisters, cleverly turns the tables and give the novice an initiation which he is not likely to forget. The candidate for initiation, a handsome Native Son, appeared as Miss Wilhelmina Williams, attired in a robe oi pale blue, made aT Empire and wearing a deeply embroidered petticoat, He was quite the belle oi the evening. A spelling match ensued, in which Miss Nora Olliver bore off a souvenir spoon and Prof. Clark a nickel clock, while Miss Nettie Newman and Mr. Will Haslam captured the booby prizes a dictionary and an alphabet primer.

Refreshments were announced as "poi, chase and tamales, the latter being made after an entirely new receipt. Cards, dancing and music filled the rest of the evening. Among the guests from abroad were Miss Helmke, Denver; Miss West, Agnews; Charles Stevens, Massachusetts and Messrs Babcock and Myer, Alameda.
