1 lie 1 hree Men Selet led to Serve by Governor. Governor Bu-id yesterday announced his appointment of the Coda Commission, hii-h was authorized by the last Legislature til straighten out many of the tangles in the codes of California. The gentlemen selected to perform the task outlined are Judge Frank Baldwin of Stockton Ryland Ii. Wallace of Han Francisco and James C. Daly of Ventura.

The appointment to one of the Com-rnissioiierehips was ffist tendered to ex-Jndge R. Y. Hayue, but when he learned that residence in Harramenlo was one of the requirements of the position he declined to accept. Judge Baldwin, was formerly a State Senator and has been Judge of the Superior Court in Han Joaquin county. Ryland B.

Wallace is a eon of Judge Wallace of Hsu Francisco. James C. Daly is an assistant of Attorney-General F'llzgerald. The Commission will make its headquarters at Sacramento and will have the appointment of a Secretary and a stenographer. It is stated that Fllmer Wolff', a young attorney of the State University, will ho appointed Secretary.

The Commissioners will hold office, under the law, for two years, but as the work outlined will requiro six or eight years, it is expected that the next Legislature will extend the period of their official existence. A CAMPERS' EXCURSION. A Novel Trip Over the Narrow-Uange Road. About people availed themselves of the opportunity given by the Southern Iacific yesterday to take a trip through the Santa Cruz mountains, ami the excursion train which left San F'rancisco yesterday morning to give the people of that city an opportunity of Beeing the beauties of our mountain scenery and selecting a camping place for the summer, was crowded to its fullest capacity. Stops were made at all the mountain stations, and lunch was eaten at the Big Trees.

The party was then taken to Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek, and our neighbors were fairly overrun with visitors. The Santa Crnz mountains are becoming very popular with campers, and it is hoped the excursion of yesterday made a good impression. Next week the season at Ben Lomond will be fully opened, as over a hundred campers and guests are expected. Even now many are there, the hotel having at least twenty-five gueste. A Blue Jay Club.

The California quail is recognized at the most perfect bird for sporting purposes known on the Pacific Coast. It meets all the requirements of the gun ners ranging from the millionaire sport with his $350 outfit, down to the freckled faced ranch fcov with his $3 musket. Each year quail are becoming less plentiful, fu some parts of the State the cause is laid at the door of the market hunter. In the foothills this side of the Sierras, however, the saucy blue jay has been branded as the cnlprit. Adversely with the decline of the quail the bluejays increase.

It is positively known that the jay is ever on the watch for birds nests and as soon as one is found he has a royal feast. In several counties sporting clubs are offering a bounty for each blue jay killed. Recently a club was organized in Grass Valley which had for itB obeject, the riddance of this bird. TheYdub offers for each blue jay killed. In addition, a premium of $5 will be paid the person killing the most birds during the season.

The club is very appropriately called the Blue Jay Club and a similar one has been organized at Ynba City. Baptist Social. At the East Santa Cruz Baptist Chapel on Pennsylvania avenue a very pleasant social was held laBt evening by the ladies of the church. The attendance was very good and a splendid program was rendered, followed by the serving of ice cream and cake. It was sociable in every sense of the word as all present seemed to be in the mood to make all feel at home.

15c perw eek. HOON THAT MAY HKIMi A BOOM TO SAN HtAM'hCO Prospect of Ht uring Fuel at Prices That Will Oreatly Stimulate Manufacturing The rec-ntly organized Manufacturers and Producers Association of California recently sent a committee to examine the newly developed coal mines at Corral Hollow. They report that the coal mines are clearly traceable in, and induce, a territory over six and one.half miles long and one and one-quarter miles wide, lying in Corral Hollow Valley, about ten miles southeast from Livermore and eighteen miles from navigable tide water. The owners of the mines have in contemplation the construction of their own railroad east to the Han Joaquin river and tide water, about eighteen miles on a down grade in the direction of traffic, thus insuring lowest possible cost of operation and transportation to market. The work during the paBt five years 1ms centered chiefly in the Enreka Mine, and we explored closely nearly seven thousand feet of tunnels, drifts, shafts and elopes dry, well timbered and ventilated crossing or drifting with numerous veins of coal, cleanly and clearly defined.

The inspection left no doubt in our minds of the immense quantity of available coal, and we are not disposed to question the engineers estimate of tons. They also say they will he able to mine, with proposed faeilitiie, 2.0C0 tone per day, and to market the same in Han Francisco for $2.00 ptr ton, and main tain a selling price not to exceed $3 00 and $3 50 per ton, based on handling coal over their own railroad to tide water and thence, in steel bargSB, to Han F'ran cisco or accessible river points.
