Gail Appell Triumphs In State Amateur Golf GLASTONBURY, Conn. (AP) Gail Appell, who led all three a four-over- par 76 Thursday and scored a six-stroke victory in the Con. nccticut State Women's Amateur Golf Championship. Mrs. Appell had birdies at the fifth and 15th holes and double bogeys at the 10th and over the par.

(AP) --The George Weiss exhibit at baseball's Hall of Fame is one of the largest displays of mementos ever put together by an executive. When he ran the New York Yankees and later the New York Mets, Weiss had a hobby of collecting souvenirs from pennant-winning years. The dazzling display has been moved by Mrs. Hazel Weiss from her home in Greenwich, Conn. It includes plaques, medals, cartoons, silver clocks, pictures and jewelry.

Ex-Sopner Charged With' Rape AUSTIN, Tex. (AP) Oklahoma fullback, Waymon Clark has been charged with and police said they are looking at his possible involvement in 150 to 200 other rapes and burglaries.

Police identified Clark, 22, and said he had been charged with rape in a July 24 incident and also aggravated rape and, attempted rape. Clark was a schoolboy star at Austin Reagan High and started for OU as a junior in 1973, but was dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons after the season. NEW YORK (AP) Bobby Howfield apparently has kicked lis last National Football League field goal. Howfield, who will be 39 in December, was placed on unre- callable waivers by the New York Jets Thursday. It was the second trip to the waiver list 'or the veteran who went unclaimed last weekend. When the Jets waived him gain Thursday, they lost the right to recall him off the waiver list. Howfield played seven years but missed the last half of the 1374 season because of a trou- lesome knee and lost his job to Pat a former All- American soccer player from the University of St.

Louis. Leahy is 24. A native of England, Howfield led the American Football Conference in scoring with 121 points in 1372. He scored 18 of in a single game when he kicked six field goals to account for all the Jets' points in an 18-17 victory over New Orleans. Howfield played professional soccer for 12 years in England before being discovered by Hank Stram, then coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

He was cut by the Chiefs in 1908 but was signed by the Denver Brpcos. After three seasons with the Broncos, he was traded to the Jets in 1971 in exchange for place kicker Jim Turner. In his seasons with New York, he connected on 67 per cent of his field goal tries including six of seven before being injured last year. For his career, he hit on 98 of 166 field goals and missed only ieven of 200 extra points. "Bobby has been one of the best pressure kickers in football," said Jets' Coach Charley Winner.

"I thanked him for his great contributions to the Jets and wished him the best of luck." Howfield said he was not surprised at the Jets' move. "I knew it coming," the vet- kicker said. Steelers Trade McMakln PITTSBURGH (AP) --The Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday traded tight end John McMakin to the Detroit Lions for a future, undisclosed draft choice.

McMakin was named to the National Football League's rookie team in 1972, his first year. He started all but one game in the 1972 and 1973. He saw little action last year because of injuries and lost his job to Larry Brown and Randy Grossman.
