C. Leonard istlu man who has been writing so many funny things for the Titus ville Ilcarld. Thore is a report that ho has accepted position on the Cleveland Leader. EXCESSIVE DRINKING IN LONDON. From tho Saturday ltevlew.

Thore arc some scandals, about which it ifl ier baps vt eli to say as littlo as possible, but tiiero are other scaudalB wlvich mutit be boldly facod if any good is to bo done, and which cannot be hushed up, however strong may be theaesiro and however general the consent tht they should be treated as non existent. The drinking habits of the upper and middle elasaes seem to us to havo roached a point al which they clearly belong to the latter category. It is necessary to Bpoak out and to call things by their right names in order that those who are now dallying more orlcBs unconijoiouoly with ft DEOBADING AND BUINOC? VICE may see the peril of their ways and make a resolute effort to turn from them. In any comparison betweon tho present generation and our grandfathers or our great grandfathers it is usually assumed that wc aro superior to them at loaat in our temperate nse of intoxicating liquors. Gentlemen no longer come reeling into tho drawing room after a debauch at the dinner table, Five bottle men have cone the wav of tho dodo and the ptorodactyle, aud the days of prolonged potations are at an At a dimier party tho gentlemen rejoin the ladies after a brief interval, sometimes following them at once to tho drawing room.

Heavy drinking is regarded as a disgraceful anachronism, and a man who gets drunk excludes himself from good society. All this is very true, but it does not quite prove the assertion that wo aro a moro sober people than our grandfathers; it only provos that we do not get drunk in the same way as they did. It is quite possible, to drink a great deal of liquor, even of Btreiig liquor, without yielding to that absoluto intoxication which reveals itself in inarticulate speech, staggering movements, or sensoloBs stupor. A good deal depends on whether tho "liquor is consumed at a sitting or in PRAMS TAKEN AT INTERVALS during tha clay. Violent or helpless, intoiisation is but one among rainy phases bf drunkenness.

It may be said that it is only mochanics and petty shopkeepers who now allow "themBoh'OB to bo seen in this condition. Homo of them are confirmed iOte, and are always tippling; but as a rule, whon men of tliie class got drunk, it is not by means of habitual drams, but aa tbo natural conclusion of a drinking bout in wliicli tliey havo engaged srifcb a distinct expectation, if uot'expreosly for the sake, of this result. There is a bi' drink" romu'riug with moro or less frequency, and in tho intervals they are perhaps aB sober as judges. This was once tho way in which gentlemen settled down to their cupi and the fashion has been gradually descending in tho social Of course it is a disgusting and brutish habit, and it may be hoped that in tbo courso of time it will be caul off by the laboring population aa it has been by the gentlefolks, judicious legislation porhaps assisting tho natural process. But what wo aro now con coined to point out is that tbis is after all only one kind of and not in all respects tho most dangeroiiB and destructive kind.

Its very grossness and tho violent external indications which accompany it supply to some extent a warning, if not a corrective It is a rock on which no vessel can split unawares. There is a sham, unmistakable "nenaltv for each cnrnime which suggests reflection and encourages reform. If a man goes to tho doge in tbis mannor, he goes with hiB eyes open, and overybody can see plainly what haB happened, and can put together cause and effect and draw the neceeeary moral. It is the Btrong still current of tho stroam above the falls, tho fatal grip of which is not appreciated until it is too lato to strogglo against it, which is most to be dreaded. It is poesiblo for a man to be veiy much tho worse for drink, as the phrase is, both in a moral and physical sonso, without Bhow ing it in his gait or Bpeech, and even to be ALL BUT A C0NFIBJIED DIJUN AItD without himself being more than faintly aware of the peril in which he stands.

Hence the serious and alarming aspect of the kind of drunkenness which is now becoming so provalent in society, even in quarters where it has hitherto been little BUBpected drunkenness which, stopping short of absolute intoxication, takes the form of a perpetual and feverish craving for alcoholic excitements, for nips and drams, lor odd glasses of shorry and spots" of brandy at irregular houra. As a more matter of hygiene, it would probably be better for a man to get fairly drunk once or twice every few weeks than to yield himself in bondage to an evil desire, which, when once indulged, establishes its dominion by preying on the stomach and destroying the appetite of its wretched victim, and thus compelling him to depend ou stimulants for sustenance. It is possible for a time to make alcohola substitute for food, but of course it can only bo for a timo, aud the end ia certain, and often Bwift in coming. A moro decorous indulgence in stimulants has been substituted for tho simple brutality of sitting down to drink steadily and without intermission until tbo host aud his guests fell doad drunk under the table. In tht) latter case there was at leaBt a limit to drinking for a time, and naturo was able to impose an interval of sobriety boforo the next dobauch.

lint tho HABIT or TAKING) DRAJIS AND NII'S may bo continued, almost without cessation, from one year's end to another, until paralysis or delirium intervenes. There is of course a constant tendency to increaso the duse, and the tippler's condition is always becoming more pitiable and helpless but his (le. ceiit is mootli aud not in temipted by the shocks which pull up the moro violent drunkard in bis desperate career, and almost compel him, in spito of himself, to reflect on tho misery aud degradation which ho is accumulating for himself. It is impossible to shut our eyes to the signs of tho times. Ou overy side wo see proofs of the increasing habit 01 drinking at all hours of tbo day.

The railway stationB aro 1 ocoming vast drinking Thoro aro few bakers or confectioners who do not exhibit a decanter and glasses on their counter. Tho theatres present tlio appoaranco of a succession of bars. One of the newest of tbem opens into a tavern, which shares tho same roof, aud may bo regarded as part of tho same establishment; wbilo visitors to another Und barmaids established in bowers of bottled at ovory turn of the central staircase and in evory sparo nook and cornor of tbo auditorium. It might almost bo supposed that tho day is not far distant when (ho West end theatres will borrow a loaf from thoir humble suburban rivals, and providing overy accommodation for industrious drinking during the performances. As if tbis abuudant provision for the insatiable thirst of tlio community were not sufficient, it appears that it has of lato become the custom for commercial meu to set up a private bin, or at least bottle, IN TIIEIIl TLACES OF BUSINESS.

No counting houso would seem to be considered complete witliout a well stocked cellaret, and it is hinted that attorneys1 chambers are titted up with equal care for similar rites. It is true that there was moro downright drunkenness fifty or sixty years ago, on tho othor hand it may be doubted whother the consumption of liquor lias not greatly increased. There are apparently not a few pooplo who are under the impression that, with tbo exception perhaps of brandy and whisky, no iutoxicating drinks aro now in uso, champagne being only a kind of lemonade, and as innocuous as currant wino, while claret, of course, 18 only a sort of colorod water. It would perhaps occasion considerable surprise if the amount of raw alcohol contained in the light winea which are bo much in favor, aud which are triumphantly referred to as a proof of the increasing sobriety of the nation, could bo extractod aud oxbibited. Most of the low priced sherry is only brandy and water in disguise, but the brandy which forma tho principal basis of tbo deleteriouB compound beara no relation to tho juice of tbo grapo it is A FIERY, CORRODING SPIRIT, distilled from potatoes, beet root, grain, or perhaps ovon from timber.

Some people flatter themselves that, if thoy keep to a very dry sherry, they are safo but dry sherries, to any degree of diyness, are now to be nad at any price, the wine merchants having discovered that tho addition of nitre will produce the samo liavor. Much of tbo cheap claret which is consumed under the impression that it is a light temperance beverago ia also highly flavored with coarse spirits. It may bo obaorved that persons who aro accustomed to this so called light wine often disparage tho hotter kinds as tame aud insipid. Tho introduction of cheap wines into this country has proved, we suspect, a very questionable advantage. Quantity for quantity, it may be bettor to drink a simple claret than strong port but, on the other hand, it must bo rememberod that the claret usually sold is vory far from being so simple and innocuous as is supposed, that it is consumed more freely aud frequently than port was in former days, and that a largo clasa of pooplo who rarely drank wino at all, but contented thomsolvos with water or light beer at their uioals, are now in the habit of driuking soveral glasses of wine in a day.

If pooplo do not got drunk as thoy iiBod to do, it is certainly not because they havo reduced their consumption of intoxicating drinks; and it is not certain that tho modern fashion, although it may be moro decorous, is an improvement as regards its etfect ou health, and morals. The feveii dines'; aud restlessness of modern life, the morbid passiou for excitement aud seusatiou, tbo tendency to reckless speculation in business, audio a headlong pace in society, may without mtii li difficulty be traced in a great incisure to the INCREASING SE OJf 1A5(JKKW STIHUIANTS, Under tiiero circumstances, it is to to liud that (lie doctors, who havo great infl.ioriee in Mich matters, aro now turning their attonlion seriously to this canker of society. Some olfensc lias apparently heeu occasioned" by Uio opnniui; statement of tho Medical Dee'aration that it is believed that tlio iucoi.siilcrato proscription of large quantities of alcoholic liquids by inedija! men for their paticuta has given rise, in many instances, to tho formation of intemperate habits;" but it is impossible to dony that tho doctors, as a body, havo mado themselves responsible for a cortain share of the mischief. Their sins in this respect havo been sins both of omission and commission, and their reticence has porhaps boon more injurious than their prescriptions. Thoy have encouraged tho use of stimulants, not only by administering thorn somewhat too freely in particular cases, but also by neglecting to challenge or rebuUo nnduo indulgence with sufficient plainness of epoech whon it camo under their notice.

It is true that patients often take upon themsolvos to intorprot the physicians advico in a Benao agreeable to thomselvos, or to father upon him directions which ho would bo tho last to give. What has been rooommondod for au omorgoncv has been adoptod as a regular habit, nnd drops" are magnified into drams. At tho samo time, although the nocions DO NOT DESERVE ALL THE BLAME which is cast upou thom, it can hardly bo aaid that thoy havo shown that caution and that senso of gravo responsibility which aro necessary in proscribing so fascinating and dangeroua a drug aa alcohol. The Medical Declaration, in faot, hits the blot oxactly when it 8aya that alcohol, in whatever form, should bo proscribed with as muoh caro as any powerful drug, aud that tho directions for its use Bhould bo bo framod as not to bo interpreted as a sanction for oxcoss, or necessarily for tho continuance of ita uso when tho occasion ia pa8t." Ji' the doctors choose, thoy can do immense ecrvico by dissipating tho Bupor slitions exaggeration which prevails as to tho value of alcohol as au article of diot by warning their patients of the insidious and fatal advance of tho appetite for stimulants if onco encouraged; by compelling thom to reckon up tho oxtont of their regular potations and by stripping off all digiiiso or illusion as to the character of tho FINANCIAL.
