Nkw York, August 31st. The Timas London correspondent telegraphed August 30th To-night I learn the details of hat the world is likely to ho excited over in a few days. The conclusion my informant draws from it is that the greatest war of the century is at hand. The secret of the Franzenhad interview is that De Gie. urged Prince Bismarck earnestly to prevent Prince Alexanders return to Bulgaria.

Bismarck declined to commit himself, took the matter ad referendum and shortened the interview almost abruptly. A great amount of telegraphing between Berlin, Vienna; London, Rome and Constantinople ei-sued. Whether M. de Gicrs got an answer before his unexpectedly hasty departure, is not known; but the result was Prince Alexander was not restrained from going to Bulgaria. It is known that Russian gold has been going in great quantities through Greece to ferment a rising in Macedonia, which is expected to occur daily.

It is believed to be certain that the pressure of Germany, Austria and England has gained Turkey over once more and the Porte will authorize Alexander as a tributary Prince to enter Macedonia, subdue it and incorporate it as a part of his dominions held under the Porte with a view of the eventual formulation of the Kingdom of Bulgaria. Against this plan is set the practical certainly that Russia will attempt to occupy Bulgaria, when she will be resisted by Austria, Turkey, Roumelia and Bulgaria. This will enable Germany to hold aloof, keep France in awe and satisfy the Kaiser, whose scruples have long delayed a collision between Teuton and Muscovite. It pays to trade where ONE PKICE reigns supreme; where one. persons money is as good as anothers, and where business is conducted strictly on the square. 1Jtw New Firm BRYANT The Democracy of California in Convention. STEPHEN 31. WHITE Of Los Angeles, Elected Temporary Chairman.

PRINCE ALEXANDER, Or BULGARIA, Beceived with Enthusiasm by Priests and People Eastern War Clouds Thickening Teemer Wins a Bcull Race. Ais.nated 1rte duvalchet to the Daily Surf San Francisco, Aug. 31. The appear ance of the Music Hall as the convention assembled there to-day was exceedingly handsome, the ducoratin being in excellent taste. The hall will accomodate 1500, 000 ol whom can find daces on the main floor.

The delegations are seated according to size, the 107 H. F. delegates having the front center, Alameda on the right, Los Angeles on the left, Sacramento back of Alameda, and so on. A banner, in many cases a handsome one, indicates the location of each delegation. Washington Bartlett gained ground all day yesterday, and last evening his support was, in many cases, outspoken.

Delegates and visitors began to arrive as parly as 12 oclock. The galleries set apart for visitors were well filled a few ladies are present at this hour. 1:15 p.m. The Convention is not yet sailed to order. It is now understood that N.

Green Curtis, of Sacramento, and S. V. White will be the only nominees for temporary chairman. It is also stated that this has been agreed upon for purpose of testing the question whether this convention will support the action of the Stockton convention of two years ago by the election of White or independent of any faction, by the selection of Curtis, who is known as an independent candidate. Curtis chances for the office are considered excellent.

The San Francisco delegation has decided to oppose the admission to the convention of proxies. The latest rumor in the hall of convention is that Buckley will throw his strengtli for Reddy. Should this prove true, Reddy, it is stated, will get the nomination at Convention hall. Printed circulars are being distributed to the delegates of the convention, signed by J. N.

Iayne, D. F. Beveridge, Rev. Black, Frank Thompson, Henry Meyer and Janies Traliey, representing a minority of the late Sacramento County Central Committee, in which they protested against the action of the majority of the County Central Committee in appointing delegates instead of calling a primary election for their section as requested by the laws of the State. It also calls upon the convention to support the delegation called by the minority.

This will probably be settled by the Committee on Credentials when they report. The majority of the late Sacramento County Central Committee in answer to the circular of the minority, have issued printed circulars charging the minority with indecent haste and unfairness in calling the primaries one day only before the elections were to take place. The Democratic State Convention met at five minutes past two oclock this afternoon in the main hall of the new Odd Fellows building, on Market St. The convention will nominate a full State ticket, three associate justices of the Supreme Court and Congressmen. The Western Union "Telegraph Company will run a telegraph wire into the convention for the special use of the Associated Press, in order to expedite the report of the proceedings to the interior papers.

The convention was called to order by W. D. English, Chairman of the State Central Committee. Ilis speech was confined to saying that he had the honor of calling the convention to order and without further preliminary he announced that the nominations for temporary officers were in order. Clay Taylor rose and in a speech counseling harmony iir theDemocratic party, nominated N.

Green Curtis, of Sacramento, for temporary Chairman. II. B. Gillis, of Siskiyou, seconded the nomination. Senator Del Valle, of Los Angeles, in a short, Stirling speech nominated Stephen M.

White, of Los Angeles, for temporary Chairman of this Convention. Hon. Barclay Henley, of Sonoma, seconded the nomination; he said: I am constrained by the highest sense of duty, as a representative of true Democracy and to my constituents, to second the nomination of Stephen M. White, a man who voices and represents the anti-monopolists and the true Democracy. Where does antagonism to Stephen M.

White come from 7 I impugn the reasons of no one. It conies Iroin the corner of Fourth and Townsend streets. Let it not be said that this Convention has been influenced by railroad and monopoly interests. Judge Terry, of San Joaquin, rose and seconded the nomination of Curtis: I represent the whole San Joaquin delegation, and they are solidly in favor of Curtis. I can also safely say that I can represent four-fifths of the whole Democracy of the State.

MAMijurrmt; of all kinds. EIGHT EEPRESENTATION. The Watsonville Trantrript, in its issue of last week, is very much inclined to have chills over that apportionment of delegates to the County Convention, as made by the Democratic County Central Committee. With the old cry of North and South it draws the line at Soquel and shows that the northern half of the county will have in the County Convention a majority of four over the southern end, while the vote for Cleveland ami Hendricks as about equal between the two sections. The Truuscript dwells upon the fact that the small precincts have a larger representation in proportion to the vote than the larger ones.

In this we think the County Central Committee has acted wisely. In the smaller precincts a large majority of the voters are property holders who have a genuine interest in the prosperity and government of our county, while in our larger precincts a very large proportion of our voters are of the non-taxpaying, non-pi educing class. THE KEMEDY. It is as natural for the average farmer to grumble as it is for the sparks to fly upward, yet there is no doubt that as now managed there is much ground for complaint of net results with the class of California farmers who depend upon grain and hay products. The courts are crowded in San Joaquin and other grain growing counties with the petitions of insolvent farmers.

Thousands of broad acres of golden grain reads well in print, and as an exchange puts it, has an euphonious sound when silver-tougued orators herald Californias praises to enraptured multitudes, but iu actual life such farming is neither attractive nor profitable. It is the ten acres well tilled, with abundance of water, diversity of crops, accessible markets, and agreeable scenery and surroundings that make the ideal farm, where comfort and a competency can be at the same time secured. This is what the canyons, valleys and foothills of this county offer where the farmer who is energetic may he prosperous, and where his table may be supplied with every product of the zone. If California farmers will seek such locations nnd then to quote a homely but expressive phrase, live at home and board at the same place, there will be no insolvency or discontent. Wo quote from the Santa Cruz jottings in Tngletide: Watsonville will have three new L.

A. W. members before the end of the month. Three Santa Crnz riders are talking of joining the Bay City Wheelmen. Some visiting small boys are making nuisances of themselves with their bicycles by sidewalk riding, than which nothing tends more to bring the wheel into dispute.

They seem to consider themselves privileged, and no reasoning can stop them. An Ohio wheelman, Harry Ilyer, is summering in Santa Cruz, at the Wilkins House, the L. A. W. hotel.

The Watsonville and Santa Cruz wheelmen expect to take fart in the L. A. W. parade at San Francisco, on Admission Day. We would recommend to Consul Eadke that lie a6k the Town Council of Santa Cruz to pass an ordinance prohibiting sidewalk riding.

Sidewalks are reserved for pedestrians, and a bicycle has no more right thereon than a horse and buggy. The northern division of the Southern Pacifics branch road, connecting San Jose with Alamaden, a distance of eight miles, is being rapidly pushed on. Grad' ing is almost completed and the contractor started in to lay track at the beginning of the week. The only work of any consequence yet remaining to be done is some little bridge work and a hill that that cannot be graded until the track is laid np to it. It is expected, however that the line will be opened very shortly for business.

When operated this extension, besides affording rapid and easy communication witli the Alinaden quicksilver mines, also passes close beside some very fine yellow sa lidstone quarries. Side tracks will be constructed and every facility offered of direct transportation to the City. The country through which the line passes is in a very high state of cultivation, being mostly laid out in orchards and vineyards in small tracts. An exchange states that there are several apple trees at Hot Springs, Lake Tahoe, loaded with fruit. This is probably the highest point in the United States where such fruit is grown, being over 6,203 feet above the level of theses, lt-is nearly 500 feet higher than Truckee.

AND FEED Honest Living Prices. CONVINCED. Opposite Bridge St. Largest Assortment of London, August 31st, Despatches from St. Petersburg state that the leading Russian papers affect to have great fears concerning the fate of Bulgaria, Where, to quote the language of one of them, there are two governments and two armies menacing each other with civil war.

A large crowd left Tiernova to meet the Prince at a point five miles distant and escorted him into town amid great enthusiasm. An address of welcome was presented in behalf the populace.

Alexander will probably proceed to Philiipopolis to-day. Bucharest, Aug. 31st.
