Ir, A. UjUINLAN A into, City Uonla! Uihcu, :5 st, opposlin cin.y Hall. uiylatit FromtlioN. Y.Cltizon., Tho result ot the present season's flailing on, Lone Island is not encouraging to lovers of. the gentle art, and the conclusion is forced upon ub that the waters of this hitherto most favored of all localities aro gradually but surely becoming DEPLETED OF THEIR STOCKS OP TBODT, Looking at the causes which have boon effective in bringing about this deplorable result, we aro not inclined to lay so much stress on the operations of the poaching fraternity as are some of our friends.

It seems hardly possible that any amount of surreptitious fishing can deplete waters so entirely favorable to tho increase and protection of this favorito fish as ar the watois of our favored Long Island, especially in view of the fact that muoh of the best breeding ground is almost impenetrable, and so tangled with bush and tufts and roots as to be absolutely safe from netting. Poachers are not alarmingiy destructive, except when they capture tho adult fish on tho spawning beds and the number of large fish taken by stealth from tho ponds during tho fishing season cannot materially reduce the stock, or rather cannot materially tend to hasten the timo of tho deplotion of tho waters. If only large fish are killed with rod and line, the supply will be constant and certain. The gradual ex1 tinction of the fish was the inevitable CONSEQUENCB.OF CONSTANT FISHrNO, with no corresponding efforts at protection and preservation, and many fishermen in the older and more densely populated sections have expressed much surprise that the result has been so long deferred. There is no good reason why their experience should not be ours.

Long Island has never been inundated by the rush and flood of Summer travel. But for this fact her waters would long Bince have been reducod to tho condition of the mountain streams of Vermont and New Hampshiie, and the onco splendid trout rivers of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, many of which were so directly connected with the ocean that the fish found no difficulty in reaching tho salt sea, and feeding themselves fat on the abundance thereof. To inveigh against tho crowd of cockney sportBmcn whicii every successive Summer unwinds its hues and baits its hooks be sido evory rill or rivulet which is capable of sustaining a trout of two inches length would be as vain and futile as to inquire whence springs the passion which moves it to action. The question arises, Why trout Surely there is no lack of fiBh more worthy the angler pursuit than the trout frr which are bo eagerly souzht and ruth lessly killed! Why will not Borne Bcaly spoil other than trout satisfy tho insane desire of THE COCKNEY CHEW? Is there so much in the mere name It will hardly be denied that a half pound perch is a more glorious capturo tnan a nair ounco trout. Yet the perch, the catfish and the snckor aro mainly left unpursued, while the trout is followed from tho sea to the Bonrce of every stream which is suspected of harboring a single specimen of saimo jonnnaus, nowover Bmaii anoinsignincant.

This fashion, or passion, or mania, seems to be on the increase, too and we opine that it will subside only when not a Binglo specimen remains to reward the ambition of the would be sport. Going back to our own Long Island, wnore wo were when this digression occurred, wo repeat the words "favored locality" favored not only for the reason that it lies out of tho line of Summer travel, but because the peculiar geological structure of the country is such that both droughts and freshets are unknown and the streams, rising in the centre of the island and flowing north and south, as the case may be, are not bo long that they cannot bo protected from THB DEPREDATIONS OP POAOHEB8, either amateurs or professionals. Yet, with these many advantages, the fact is patont to all who look deenlv and interestedly into the subiect. that surely, and of late rapidly, theso most fa vored and heretofore proline waters are becom ing poor and valueless as fiBhing properties. Tho important quostion now presents itself How shall this state of things be remedied? How shall these emptied streams be repletod The answer which comes naturally to the hps is artificial breeding and this wonW seem to afford a solution of the problem.

But artificial trout rearing is not free from difficulties and drawbacks. It is expensive, troublesome, and by no moans certain in its results. Many of tho Long Island ponds receive their waters from extended brooks or rivers, tho bods of which afford the best natural breeding grounds for trout. It would seem that in such cases a fair amount of protection especially during the spawning season would keep the ponds in full supply. Especially is this true of the waters owned by THE SOUTH SIDE SPOBTSSIEN's CLUB.

At the inception of this club great hopes were ontertained by many of the best fishermen in this vicinity. It was thought the action and example of so highly respectable a body would tend to promote the increase of trout on the island, and arrest the decadence of the truly gentle Bport of trout fishing. How far ahort the club has come of this promise, will bo shown by aud by. Let us look at the present condition of the ponds, as they occur going eastward, commencing with the well known Massapoqua. This pond is, we bolieve, well stocked with fish of good size, though wo cannot speak positively as to its presant condition, not having wet a line there during tho prcBont season.

Of Mr. Belmont's pond we cannot speak from either knowledge or hearsay. Tho fishing in Mr. Phelps' pond is not, we believe, first rate, the fish being neither large nor in great numbers. Of the ponds intermediate to the magnifioent wators of the South Side Club, there is nothing to be said.

These ponds afford every season a few large sized, well fed trout; but tho numbers are, we judge, as a rule, constantly growing less. Of the waters of the South Side Club we can say with truth, and we think without fear of contradiction, that the FISHING HAS NEVER BEEN SO POOR as at present but we are at a loss how to speak of, how to characterize tho stupidity or folly, or Bomething worso, which has led to tho depletion of tho waters of tho finest trout property on the whole coast of Amorica, all things being considered. Tho South Side Sportsmen's Club of Long Island waB chartered for tho sole and express purpose of increasing, protecting and capturing sal mon trout and game. The Connetquot Kiver, which supplies the pond of the Club, rises some distance north of the Long Island Railroad and flows a southerly course for about four miles, discharging its tweuty two millions of gallons of pure water daily into tho Great South Bay through the creek. The north line of tho club property crossen the river about a mile and a half above the head of the pond, and all tho best and proper breeding grounds are, of course, above that hue.

Theso grounds tho fish on the club property seek, in the natural course of things, once iu each year to Bpawn. The obstruction which the club placed iu the river to prevent the ascent of the spawning fish, may have been in a measure effective so far simply as to provent the fish reaching the head waters but tho result has not been fortunate, as wo propose to show furthor on. To use a tiito saying, "l'is easy to load a horse to Ac. So you may. by obstructing tho passage of fish on their way to tho natural spawniug bed, foreo them to spawn iu deep water: but cuibono, if your stock of fish ia constantly decreasing in npite of your obstruction In view of tliia it would seem comprehensible to the most ordinary intellect that tho ownership, or control at least, of the rivet' was a sine qua non to the success of the Club as a fishing club.

What are tho facts These waters, from tho club lino to tho railroad, have been again and again OFFERED TO THE CLUB, indeed, urged upon thom from time to timo during the last throe years. In the boat judgment of many of tho very beat friends of the Club, the price asked for this property has been rather within than beyond its real value. Disclaiming in toto the Bpirit of moro captious noss, wo desire to put on record (it may some time be valuable for reference tho opinions of those who have tho interests aud welfare of the Club most at heart. It must be romemberod that the South Side Club iB an incorporated institution, enjoying special privileges granted by the highest authority known to tho Stato. Thoreforo, we claim the right to criticise its action with a freedom we Bhould not assume were it merely a private association of gentlemen sportsmen.

No exceptions, wo suppose, will bo taken whon wo assert that the South Side Club has no better friend or more unselfish adviser thau MB. OEE SXEDECOR. It would be simplv preposterous to accuse him of being capable of advising the club to take any action wlucu would not, in ins best; beliet, dound to its permanent well being. Mr. Suede cor, in this niattor of tho purchase, has been out spoken in favor of it, to an extent which has sur prised many of liis old frionds.

Not only is this gentleman a true friend of the club, but ho is qualified to give sound advice in such a question. Mr. Snedecor's opinion has again and again been given to the effect that the possession of tho river is a matter oi vital importance to tuo aufr ceBS of the club. CAPTAIN IKE SMITH, who knows the productiveness and capabilities of tfioso proline waters botter probably than any man living, has said repeatedly that the supply ui nan uuimi. inu uio rowor waters uuicss tuo control of tho river was with the club.

Steve Murray, the boatman and one of tho best in tho world whose judgment, honesty and sincerity no man wm quusiiou, uas lamented aimoBt moro than anybody the shortsightedness which has parmittod the control of tho river to paBs out of ne nanoH oi me oiud. let, in spite oi all tins and aud of the fact that individual members stood ready to advance the money necossav to complote the purohaso, aud wait until tho club should bo in condition to reimburse the outlay in spite of all this, the sohome has been thwarted and defeated, and now the control of the waters has passed into other hands. The sure result of Biieh folly is about to be realized, and the South Sido Sportsmen's Club, after an expenditure of one hundred and eighty four thousand' dollars, finds itself possceaod of all and singular tho elements and appurtenances of a first class fishing club. EXCEPT THE FISH! Is it strange, in view of these facts, that not a few of the soundest and most judicious motnbora are of the opinion that tho boBt interests of the club have been sacrificed to the gratifioatioii of a private pique? Or, iB it to be wondered at that shares of the stook' which ono year ago were eagerly sought and readily takon, are this year numbers upon tho market begging purchasers A fishing club without flsh dividod in its own houBO, subject to packed conventions, with pro appointed trenchnieu and fuglemen and whippers with eut and driod resolutions and amendments and pro elected offlcors cannot bo callod a highly vitalized institution, except it be with that HpaBmodio vltahty whioh precedes decav Songs on my light guitar," and capor inr nimbly in my lady's chamber may bo very well in thoir way but thore aro some of us not fnr such siioitivo tricks, nor made to court amorous looking glasnes for us neither prided crondohH nor Cleopatra's barge, oven P. 1...
