usher in the 1929 gridiron season at the Blackstone avenue stadium yesterday afternoon by romping over the Bulldogs in a one-sided tilt which showed the southerners to be the superior team and the Staters to be an unseasoned foe A fair sized crowd watched the Bulldogs take a 20 to 0 defeat They saw the southern invaders earn one touchdown and the Bulldogs donate another pair One of these was converted and another point awarded Loyola when the Cardinal and Blue forward wall was offside on one try for point after touchdown Just a week from today and King Baseball will abdicate in favor of the lusty princeling Football As a matter fact that princeling hati already just about knocked all of the underpinning out from under the king and the prince is yet cutting his 1929 teeth Next Sunday will see the completion of the league schedules not that it means much except out here on the Pacific coast where anything may yet happen Five teams are so closely bunched that any of them can cop the twice this season and each is carrying a scalp with the next game to settle the issue 'Then our Acorns will pack their kits and head for Oakland where under their own name they will be One of four teams in the winter league being sponsored by the Oaks Missions and Seals And we'll see them no more until spring when they'll come here to seek berths on the Oaks Looks to us like a lot of them will make it too Fresno has hardly given boseball the support it deserves but the seed has been planted and next year may be different Phil Nterner on the other hand has given Presno a lot of real baseball and has been the mean of getting the 1930 Oaks spring training camp We tru8t that football will receive greater support than did baseball and that Fresno will awaken to its athletic poasibilittes 4) I 1 Well well well We are encouraged For none other than Grant-land Rice joins with us in predicting that the world series banner will be hoisted in Chicago And now if we can get our staff to bet on the Athletics we are assured that our prediction of several weeks ago will be borne out The famed sports writer points out that Connie Mac les best pitch-tog talent all chucks from the port side and that the Cubs' heavy artillery just dote on lefthanders while the Cubs hurling staff is a mixed collection He uses our judgment of aggressiveness as being In favor of the Cubs It will not be long now and GAMES BY 6 TO 3 COUNT mAcKmEN TIE PREVIOUS MARK 11 A GAMES or luz A By 6 To 3 COUNT Sixteen racing automobiles with the best drivers in the West at the wheels will face that veteran of all great auto classics Fred Wagner late this afternoon on the mile dirt track in the final speed event of the final day of the twenty-third annual Fresno District Fair Because the newly constructed dirt track is of such dimensions and in such excellent condition race officials here for the revival of American Automobile association events yesterday decreed that 18 cars instead of the previously advertieed 12 would start in the last event which will be over the 50- mile route It was originally planned to start 12 cars in each of the five preliminaries taking the 12 speediest for the long grind After looking over the fair racing plant the "brass hats" of the Three A declared for a larger field in the final Immediately Manager Tref le La Sena of the fair announced that an additional prize would be offered for fourth place in each of the first four qualifying heats which will be for five miles each The fifth race of five miles will be a consolation for those not making the 50-mile event In the opinion of racing fans this field which incidentally is larger than any that ever started in the Palmiest days of board track events will give a final touch to the week of speed events that will reinstate the auto racing game for dirt track events at least in the hearts of the fans in the central San Joaquin valley Another announcement from the fairgreunds yesterday was to the effect that the top guard rail on the inside of the traele had been removed It was this rail that caused the death of the beloved Jimmy Murphy at Syracuse a few years ago The final touches to the track were applied late last night Following the afternoon program the track was worked over by a crew of men and after the high act of the Five Jacks at 10 there was a final appliration of 1200 gallons of cold chloride which Ii believed will prevent all dust on the track today Due to the number of calls that has been received both at the fairgrounds office and at the chamber of commerce Manager La Senay Tact night announced that there will be no increase in the price of admission through the general gates of the fairgrounds This will remain at 50 cents However there will be an additional charge of 50 cents for the grandstands and for the box seat section with its limited seating capacity Practically all of the drivers had reported to the Three A officials last night Many of them had been in town earlier and had worked out on the track The qualifying trials will be started at noon today with Wagner holding the watch It Is expected that it Will take an hour and a half for all the boys to take their Vhirl at the now oval It is upon these time trials that Wagner places the cars in the various events Like the days of old Wagner and other A A A officiale and drivers met at dinner last night at the lintel Fresno This was for a discussion of rules and regulations Wagner in addressing the drivers pointed out the excellent plant and expressed the opinion that the Fresno District Fair track is the fastest in the state today The program at the fair will start promptly at 2 o'clock this afternoon with the first of the preliminary heats under way very shortly Athletics However Can Not Reach Yanks' Mark Of men became acquainted with the situation facing them Loyola with "Cowboy" Reid furnishing the dyna mite was into scoring territory Five plays after the opening kickoff Loyola was into pay dirt Qualls blocked the kick for extra point but it was on this occasion that the line was offside Loyola although playing much the smarter brand of football failed to earn another score In the second quarter State in possession of the ball behind Its own 20-yard line elected to pass and Jim Strutzel leaped in the air to snag the oval and scamper through a clear field to a touchdowm In the third quarter three bad passes from Horace Niswander forced Jim Tyack to kick from behind his own goal line The boot was blocked went out of bounds inside the 10-yard line and three plays later Loyola was again behind the payoff line They were held for downs one yard short of the goal line just as the gun ended the game The ball hawking Lions took ad vantage of every Bulldog early season miscue and they were many to keep Borleske's men almost constantly on the defense Several times in the third and fourth quarters it appeared that the Bulldogs were heiided somewhere but mental lapses kept them in the position of defenders rather than the aggressors There was little to complain about in the defense of the Bulldogs after Loyola scored its first touchdown The line tightened up shifted with their opponents and for most of the afternoon stoPped the Lions dead in their tracks but this defensive strength went for nothing at all when mental lapses as well as poor handling of the ball blew up scoring chances The Bulldogs made their most se rious scoring bid at the closing of the third period with the ball within 15 yards of the goal line This opportunity passed by however when an attempted pass was knocked down behind the goal line Dave Erase wiry leather lugger who formerly starred for Fresno Tech was the big hero of this sally taking a kickoff on his own 11-yard line and racing through a broken field for 69 yards resting the oval on Loyola's 15-yard stripe Two passes one from Erase to Roscoe Bessey and another Brace to Dick Drown put the ball on the 15-yard line Twice during the afternoon Loyola punts were recovered by Loyola men otter being muffed by Bulldogs and that is only two examples of the fashion the ball hawking Lions were taking advantage of everything coming their way Only in two brief intervals did the Bulldogs show any offensive power One was the brief spurt staged by the Staters in the third heat and later in the fourth reriods considerable gain Wag made when Jim Tyack turned in his test exhibition of ball carrying For the remainder of the afternoon BorleskeS men failed to function on the offence principally because they did not know their 1)lay and were not executing them as laid out by their mentor Interfefence men did very little in clearing a path for ball carriers while the blocking Was not up to the standard necessary to keep Loyolans
