Correspondent The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved $105000 in funds on Tusday for three San Gabriel Valley juvenile' diversion programs to start experimental'' community-based diversion programs The West San Gabriel Juvenile Diversion Project in Temple City the Mid-Valley Project in Duarte and the Pomona Juvenile Diversion Project will split the funding and begin programs which would take youths who have committed non-major crimes and try to rehabilitate them while keeping them in their own communities 1 t' A 1: i PRITIEL NUTZELS projects The law enforcement representatives gave a strong backing of the proposal and made a few suggestions for modifications that were later incorporated into the program approved by the supervisors i The board also approved a MAO contract for park and roadside maintenance with the city of La Canada Flintridge Under the agreement the county will provide maintenance for parks and roadside trees and the city will reimburse the county for the work The board also: Established a committee to study the possible merger of a number of county services with similar services provided by the city of Los Angeles Received notification that the county is eligible for $38 million in Comprehensive Employment Training Act CETA) funds that may be used for any purpose that is consistent with the federal guidelines Angeles Received notification that the county is eligible for 8 38 million ion in Comprehensive Employment Training that may nmingAce used for any purpose that is consistent with the federal guidelines Reg ONLY 69 8 OZ PACKAGE SANTA ANITA FASHION PARK 4474862 Under the new program teenagers who are classified as less serious offenders and who have committed crimes such as disturbing the peace liquor violations malicious mischief petty theft or nonmoving traffic violations would be directed to one of the three diversion programs Once in the program the youth wilt receive personalized counseling and any other professional services diversion project personnel think the youth needs A special emphasis on job placement is also part of the program With the county funds an estimated 800 youths will be helped through the new programs If this experimental program works in the San Gabriel Valley county official plan to expand it to 10 other diversion projects in the county Supervisor Pete Schabarum brought the proposal for the funding before the board two weeks ago At that time he said he had some reservations about the effectiveness of the experimental project and asked that the board delay taking action on the matter for two weeks During that period representatives from Schabarum's office met with police and sheriff's representatives of the area served by the diversion Valley county
