But the evidence that comes to hand does not at nil confirm these statomentB. It is trno that in certain departments of trado a somewhat less confident tone lias prevailed, tho iron and steel industry being a notable example. It is also truo that the mild weather has been a drawback iu special lines and that thera has been a diminished consumption of coaL It ia further correct to say tiiat the margin of profit ia very small, that prices of Western farm products aro low and that tho speculative spirit is entirely absent. But this has been the situation for long time past. In the face of it all tho most conspicuous fact which confronts tho Btudent and investigator is that, bo far from the volume of business, as a whole, being below that of a yoar ago, whon it was large, there is a further decided increase. Bergon st OST 'PUG DOG ANSWERS TO THE namoof Pvnm. Finder wiA be rowaraed byro to oo nuzjupout st. as go or a for or JHy and The Owner of the Accused by a Coroner's Jury. Henry Stancliff, of Inwood, who alleged that two attempts had boon mado to burn his rosi, donee, was looked up in Jamaica this morning, charged by a coroner's jury with boing the man who sot Are to the buildings. This is a surprising result of the investigation.

Yesterday Cor onor Everitt had John Burk and William Mosier looked up. They wero examinod privately by the coronor, and lator in tho day gave testimony boforo tho jury implicating Stanclifl'. Thore is a suspicion that they gavo incriminating testi mony through intimidation. What they said was that Stancliff offorod them $50 to sot fire to tho houBO and they refused it. Tho attempts to burn tho building were made on Dceomber 1.

and De cember 18. On the first occasion the wall in the kitchen was broken and fire started between tho lath and the weatherboards. Whon it got burning a neighbor discovered tho flames and extinguished them. On the sec ond attompt the building was sot on fire from tho outside, but watchful eyes saw it and saved tho house from destruction. Mrs.

Stancliff tried to throw suspicion on Furman Craft and many woro inclined to beliove him guilty because of his bad character. He is In lail at present, Mrs. Stancliff came into prominence once through a bravo but unsuccessful attempt to prevent a col lision on tho Bockaway division of tho Long Island Railroad which cost six lives. It is not clear what motivo StanclifT could havo had for destroying Iub reBidonce. It is worth about $1,300 and is mortgaged to William Caffrey for $800, who holds tho lire insurance policy.

Stan cliff could not have prolitod by tho lire; on the contrary, ho would havo been damaged by tho loss of his household effeotB. Tho verdict of tho jury is'uot indorsod by tho poople of tho villago and tho officors havo grave doubts of man's guilt. Stancliff was committod to tho county jail to day. Burk and MoBior wcro hold as witnesses and havo boon released on bail. STENOGRAPHERS' ASSOCIATION.

A New Orirnnizution Formally Started and Steady for Ilusiuess. The initial meeting of tho Brooklyn Stpmsca phers' Association was hold at Pratt's Institute on Wednesday ovoning. Tlio zealous interest manifested and tho largo number who joined unquestionably indicated that a sure to be successful society has been established. Tlio temporary chairman, Mr. J.

A. BaBoner, called tho mooting to order. Tho minutes of tho previous meeting, held at the rosidonoo of Misa Virginia Klingler, 582 DoKulb avonue, some days ago, was read and approved. A motion was made by Mr. Arthur Hoffmann for a pornianont organization and nominating Mr.

J. A. Hasener for president. The motion was unanimously carried. The president, on assuming the chair, promised his best efforts for the society's wolfaro.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, J. A. Itasoner; first vice president, F. W. Stanley; second vico prcsidont, Miss Alice Beattie; secre tary, MiBS Virginia Klingler: assistant secretary, Miss J.

M. Hayes; treasurer, Arthur Hoffman; librarian, MiBS Anna Kingler. Honorary members, Messrs. Charles Pratt, N. P.

Henley, F. P. Pratt and Miss Gellispio. Fifty three members were enrolled. Tho object of the association is to promote mu tual intercourse between the various stenogra phers of difforont systems and the improvement of each system and an effort to expand tho use of the culturo of stenography in Brooklyn.

Through the kindness of MesBra. Charles Pratt, N. P. Heffley andF. P.

Pratt, directors of the institute, the meetings will bo hold every Wednesday even ing in Room 38 until tho association obtains per manent headquarters. Arrangements have been made to havo prominent stenographers of New York City and Brooklyn address next week's meeting. Manager Knowles was able to assure him scenic associations adequate to the play and im audienco of which the number, the intelligence and the attention were a merited tribute to bia genius.

Tho play was the intense melodrama by Gia commetu entitled "The Outlaw," and the cast of only eight persons carried tho five acts of unrelieved seriousness with a power, an art and a command of interest and of sympathy which made the occasion moBt memorable. Next to his father Alexander Salvini bore the honors of the piece. To him was committed the character of an Italian physician, philosopher and philanthropist, whose thought was as clear as crystal, and TfhoBe life was the idealization of nobleness. He uniformly maintained a piano of high talent throughout and at one or two points rose to the stature of greatness. Miss May Brookyn as Eosalie had a character of sustained repression and unameliorated pathos, perhaps the hardest which a woman can undertake on the border of line of tragedy.

Her success was distinct. Her methods were fine. Her presence and voice were pleasing. Her intelligence was marked. Anne 0 Neil as a girl in her teens, environed by cyclones of feeling from the import of which toiler she was protected by her own ingenuousness and by the love of those who made her life their charge, was winning, earnest and artistic.

Virginia Buchanan, in an ungrateful role, satisfied the requirements of a receding school of acting, npon which the drama made considerable demands. George Fawcett, as an Italian mousignor, was priestly, plausible and pervasive in the conventional stage way. The JTerdinando of Edward Snader was conscientious and respectable and the Gaetano of Ben Johnson, though it brought him upon the stage but very briefly on two occasions, left him there long Enough to produce the impression of earnestness, propriety and promise, which identification with such a company and with the instruction of such a towering influence a3 that of Salvini ought to effect. Of the star itself it need only be said that as Conrad, the outlaw, he was visible and dominant in the character best fitted to his genius of all those which he with such trauaeend aiit ability asmnies. His was tho role of remorse, of passion, of penitence, reconciliation, pardon, self sacrifice and death.

These cardinal demands he superbly met. Italian was no bar to his way to the BCEses and to tho souls of the audience. Tho interpreting English of tho rest of the cast rendered what he should be saying easily capable of realization. His manner and his action, uniting the highest qualities of genius with the subtlest aids of art, were a translation of the char actor to the sensibilities and intelligence of all who were there. Tho impression of acting was forgotten.

The reality of a transcendant suffering, of a superb self abnegation and of the emancipation from sin and sorrow wrought by death, was burned into the very consciousness of those who abode under the master's spoil. Greatest of the great in his art, grandest of tho grand in his endowment he showed himself to be. Much might be said of the effect of his impersonation. But little need be said. It possessed all who saw it.

It made them a part of it and it a part of them. At tho matinee to day "Don Ciesar do with Alexander Salvini in the title role, was presented, and to night the Salvini season will close, with the tragedian in tho character of Othello. Althongh the subscriptions for tho Stranahan Btatue fund do not como in as rapidly as they did at first, the members of the committee entertain no doubt that the sum desired, $15,000, will certainly be contributed and, therefore, are going ahead with all the contracts for the work the game as if the money was in hand, relying on the public spirit of the citizens to make up tho sum still needed.

The ontire expenditures when tho Btatue is ready for unvaihng will, it is expected, amount to a little over the sum desired. At present the committee hopes that the weekly publication of the list of subscriptions will bo sufficient to keep tho matter before the attention of the public and ultimately secure the sum needed.
