Artnnf.od. A SWINDLER ARRESTED. A JBenerolent Imposed On. On Monday last a young baker named Antonio Intonetz oaUnd on Mrs. Garland at her residence, No.

280 Oonrt street, and earnestly begged her to glvo him the Bom of J5, which small amount, ho said, would save him from being sent to jail for ten days for an alleged offonso, of which he was entirely innocent. Ho supplemented his appeal by picturing the terriblo distress of bis young wife, who was formorly in Mrs Garland's employment, should ho ba placed behind prison bars. Mrs. Garland's benevolent feelings wero aroused, and sho gave tho suppliant $10 on hlB promise to return with half of It in a few moments. Tha scamp did not come back, and Mrs.

Garland, on investigation, found that bis representations wero utterly false and, moreover, that he had played tbe samo Bwiudllug job on several other kind hearted ladies. For the purpose of preventing him from prosecutlnir his little gamo any further Bhe wont yesterday to Justioe Morso'B Court and swore out a warrant for his arrest on a charge of obtaining money by falBe pretenses. Officer James Bmith, of the Central Office Bquad, found Intonetz in a liquor store In Myrtlo avenuo and took him before Justioe Morse, who oommitted him till Saturday for examination. WBLF1NG EXONERATED, Justice Guck Sustains an Official Act or a Deputy Sneriff. Proceedings were instituted in JuBtioe Guck's Court in Septomber last against August Wulf inp, a Deputy Sheriff, to reoovor property eoized undor foreolopure, or its value to the amount of $275.

Henry Htalljohan. tho complainant had been the proprietor of a boor saloon corner of Box and Commercial streets, Greenpoint. That ho disposed of to a customer, tho latter understanding that StaUjohan held a chattel mortgage to Becure payment of purchaso money for the sum of $500. Tho now owner of tho place failed to pay the first dollar of tho purchaso money, and on September 3 Stalljohan dirooted Wulflng to sell tho man out to satisfy tho mortgage. Six daya afterward the contents of tha saloon were sold in due form realizing the net amount of $275.

Present at the sale was a man named E. W. Brackman who, as has since appearod, really held the mortgage against tho property. His connection and the manner in whioh Stalljohan attorn tod to circumvont him was partially shown by tho evidence taken before tho magistrate. Tho final hearing In this matter took place on 'lues day of last week, decision being reservod until to day by Justice Guck.

On behalf of tho complainant, his wife, Mra. Stnlljohan testified that tho property disposed oi by Wulllng belonged to hor, and tuero their case rested. For tho defendant it was shown that ho observed every requsite form of law tn offecttng the Bale, alio that it was bona fide in every particular. It also appoaroJ that Brackman was tho party really entitled to the sum realized, if auylwdy was, and that it was a wise precaution on tho part of Wuldag to have retained ihe monoy until a judicial doci9ion in tho caso couUVbe obtained. Justico Guck has dismissed tho complaint, and in connection intiniatt It a3 his belief that, had the caso warranted, ho should havo liked to ventilate the character of Stalljohan's mortgage transaction.

This means a complete exoneration of the accused who feared having to be made to pay twice iu caso of mistake. A KEM1NDEB TO GOODRICH. "What have you to say particularly with reference to Goodrich?" inquired the reporter. "Immediately after Mr.

Sehroeder was eiecttd, Goodrich trotted off to the house of an eminent Republican friendly to tho Mayor, to solicit tho appointment of Corporation Counsel, being so ignorant of tho laws governing the position to which he aspired that he did not know it was not to be flllod within a year from the time he put in his application with this indecent haste. His disappointment explains hi3 animus. With reference to his personal disparagement, I would liko to remind him that if he will canvass hia thought upon certain ghastly events, tho horrors of which can never wholly forsake him, he will be slow in measuring out hia vituperation. I say no more at present." HENBY "AN INFAMOUS LIAB." "What reply do you dosiro to make to Mr. Henry's charges?" asked the reportt r.

Permits For Two Separate Parades Ornnted by tne Police The Routes find Arrangements Ior the Ocnioii strntton XnelMIfcrenccs Between tiie jHtibcrnlans and tle Mutual Alliance. Tiie contentions between the various Irish organizations, who celobrate St. "atrick's Day by a gnud annual parage, have been so far settled that tho two large bodies composing them have como to a eatis factory agreement, touching tlio respective routes over which they will march, and this morning tho Polico Commissioners approvod their applications for per mits, which were then signed by Superintendent Campbell.

The application for tho permit for 1 THE IKISU SOOIETXES OF EINGS COUNTY, better known as the Hibernians, claiming to be strong, was mado by Mr. Jcme3 Ryan, who will officiate aa Grand Marshal, and thn programme laid out is ts follows The various organizations to rendezvous at tho louutaiu in Bedford avenue, and at noon to tako up the lino of march irom Bedford avenuo to Myrtle, to Fulton ftrcct, to Jorolemon, to Court, to Allantio avonuo to Fourth avenue, whoro the parade will be dismissed. Although it is claimed that the Hibernians numbor 20,000 strong, it is not expected that there will bo more than quarter that number tn tho ranks on the 17th of March, owing to the goueral hardness of the times and the expense of providing regalia, etc. The arraugoniouts for THE PARADE OF THE ST. PATRICK'S MUTUAL ALLIANCB ari follows: The societies to rendezvous at tho junction of Marey and Flushing avonues, at 11 A.

an hour before tho othor body, and march thence to Lafayette avenue, to Fulton street, to Joralemon, to Court, to Atlantio avenue, to Boerum plaoe, where the parade will be disniissod. Mr. Patrick Kelly will act as Grand Marshal on the occasion, and It is confidently expected that there will be over 3,500 men in the ranks. The Hibernians and Mutual Alliance will hold meetings at the rooms of the Democratic General Committer, and at No. 50 Court Btreot, respectively, next Sunday afternoon, for tho purpese of selecting aide and perfecting the arrangements.

Withiu a few days efforts havo been made on (ho part of the mora modorately disposed mombers of both organizations TO HEAL THE DIFFERENCES wLIch have arisen for the purpose of showing a united front on St. Patrick's Day, but, it is alleged, that the. position of "no surronder" assumed by the Hibernians, presents an insurmountable obstacle to such a satisfactory arrangement. The Mutual Alliance men say that thoir proposition either to bo placed at the right of the lino or to be given tho privilege of selecting the Grand Marshal was only fair in view of their numbers and influence, and thoy wiU not entertain any other plan of oompromiso. Both parades wiU be accompanied by largo polico escorts.

Approhon slons havo been expressed that the Irish demonstration would bo marked with some Donnybrook features, bnt those are without foundation, and there is no doubt that both parades wiU be peaoeably conducted, A HEW MODE OF SVY1NDLISG. Several families and storekeepers in the Eoslern District have been swindled several times of late by two men who pretended to be engaged in the wholesale potato business. The men would oome to them and sell a number of barrels, half of which wooid be filled with potatoes and the remainder with rotten turnips. Details of Barbaritj that Brought its Tic tlm to the Lunatic Asylnm Crimes Against Nature that Mate Manhood Blnsh A Gonfession'by the Accused and Unmanly Counter Allegations. Jurrtioe Bejnler this morning took the first stopa in a proceeding that will rank la the annals of Brooklyn Courts as one of tho most shocking ever brought befopi thorn, and that in ita revelations of cruelty, and beBtlsl, almost Incredible, depravity Ib moat fortunately seldom parallolad in criminal history.

The acouacd Is a young man of twenty six years of age, only. HiB name Ib Edward P. Valentine. Ho is the son of a most exemplary father a gentleman of ioat goodness of heart, intelligence and culture and of a mother whoso virtues havo endeared her to a large circle of friends. Certainly hia parents never aclod to merit, snd cannot justiy Buffer, reproach because of the action of their wayward child, whoso education and moral training tbey moft carofully guarded up to tho period of hia quitting homo.

With a bout toward me onanicii and some spcoial talent in that direction, he was approutioed to the trade of a machinist, and probably tho companionship he formed whllo thus engaged led to his later immoralities and obliterated tho lessons of virtue ho learned at home. THK COMPLAINT charges him with unnatural crimos, and there are a series of them. Tho complainant his mother in law, woman who looks and acts like a respectable poreon, and who appears completely broken down by the ruin and disirraoe that the conduct of Valentine has cansetl her family. She came to Court yesterday, bringing her two daughters with her, and requostod Judge Semlor to grant her a private audience. The request was com plied with, and her Btatemont.led to the prompt Issue of a warrant for the prisoner's apprehension.

This morning ho was in custody, and the complainant and hor daughters were again present to appear against him. An Eaole reporter, at tne close of the brief proceeding, terminating in Valentine's committal for examination, obtained an interview with the mother of tho two pirls, and learned from her the narrative as follows Her name is Mrs. Mace, and her place, of residence, No. 473 Broadway. From bis early boyhood she had known young Valentine, who was in the babit of visiting frequently at her house.

She Baw no wrong in tho actions of the young man, and her daughter whom he afterward married evinced A TARTIAIjITY TOWARD SIM while both wovo little more than children. Another daughter, older than Valentino's (vifo, was married ari living apart from hor mother and Mrs. Mace's huB band crippled by wounds received In tho war was an iumato of tho Soldiers' Homo in Ohio, whoro he yet remains, invalid. Under these otrcumstaucos, Mrs. Mace did not wish her second daughter, Emma, to marry, and, In fact, hod no idea that aho meant to do so, or that her intimacy with Valentino was other thana juvenile courtship, out of which nothing Berious would reBult.

Sho found out her mistake throe years ago whon Emma came to be seventeen years of ago. Ono day ebo sent her upon an errand, and whilo out, Bhe met Valentine and accompanied him to tho residence of a clergyman by whom they were wed. At the tuns this event took place, the young man was liable to arrest a warrant having boon issued agamBt him for breaking windows and doing damage to property, whilo one ot his wild freaks controlled him. Learning that an officer was on his track, ho fled, ond was absent in Boston for a period of fourteen momlis. Meautims, influence had been brought to bear that EXEMPTED HIM FBOM PROSECUTION of the chargo, and he returned to live with his wife.

Their abode was an humble one, but it might havo boon made happy had he devoted himself to work and acted in a proper way. It la alleged, however, that ha took a widely contrary oourso. He began to treat his wife In the most barbarous manner. On one Mrs. Maoe Bays he caught her daughter by the hair and dragged her along tho flonr.

At another time he seized her and Btruok her head with such violence against the door as to break the panel. Yet another assault consisted of his wrenching off tho bed post and clubbing her with it on tho head, until loss of blood and tho violence of tho blows made her insensible. This treatment continued until the mind of the hapless victim of brutality sneoumbed, when she was removed to tho Lunatio Asylum at Flatbush. Whon restored to such reason as sho yet possosses, she rejoined Valentine, on his promise to treat her with kindness, but his violent temper soon broke forth anew, and the loasonB of tho calamity he had brought upon her wero Boon forgotten. His treatment of hor, says Mrs.

Mace, was, if possible, WOBSE THAN BEFOBB. Then also was committed the first of the oriraos against nature a crime so horrihlo that its details can bo but hinted at which forms ono of the chargOB on which Valontine has been arrested It coufisted of an out rane on Allio Maoe, now a girl of seventeen, and then but sixteon years of age. This villainy ib said to have been perpetrated in tho presence of the wifo of Valentine and sister of the victim, under circumstances most infamous and revolting, and its subsequent concealment by the wife is accounted for on tho ground that Bhe has been living in mortal terror of her husband, who threatened to kill hor If she made it known. A sense of shame actuated the outraged girl also to keop tho infamy a secret, and she told no one, not even her mother, of tho wrong that had boon done her. The samo wretched condition of misery endured by his wife, her mother stated, followed this occurrence, and tho overpowering dread of being beaten to death impelled hor to submit and auffor privately, so that no one can tell tho full extent of her 111 treatment.

In August last Valentine oommitted THE BEOOND ACT that ranks him among abnormal criminals by violating Mary Mace, another sister of hia wife, a child of 13 years of age. This fiendish crime he Is said to havo accomplished by the use of brute force. The girl showed the reporter her handB that he might judge of the violence used toward hor. This she did at tha motler's bohest. Tho thumb of the left hand and tho fore fiDgor of the right ore both broken, and wero dislocated in the strugylo with tho monster a struggle in which ho was successful.

Aftor this not ho furthor influenced his wifo by threats, if Bhe resisted him, to expose tho facts of the dishonor brought upon her sisters. The third crime of tho black oat ilogue was also perpetrated upon Mitry Mace on the 2d day of January last. On tfcat day her mother was absent from homo, and the only Inmates of her apartments were the little girl, Mary, and two younger Bisters, ono aged two and tho other aged eight years, when Valentino entered and forcibly seizing tho girl, Mary, consummated his DEVILISH PURPOSE. By this oot the girl and she is but a child in statute is said to havo become eneicnU. These facts, Mrs.

Maeo says, came to hor knowletlgo on Saturday last, and never belore. Thoy woro divulged by tho prisoner himsolf, who, whon remonstrated with for abusing his wife, told tho remonstraut. That per soti, in turn, informed the wretched mother to whom hor daughters, on being forced to tell the truth, mado a full confession. Mrs. Maco then visitoi 70 Union avenue, the homo of her Bon in law ani daughter.

When be accused him of the nafarioua acts alleged agcinst htm, ho repllod that ho had done as sho was informed, adaing, "You my now go to and see what you can do about It." Mrs, Maco, stung to fury, flew at the brute and would have murdered him had sho possessed a weapon and tho power to it. Last night, when arresto.l, Valentine told tho officers that he had committed the crimes charged. They found him at his home. His wife was there, also, one sido of hor face black as jet, as an effect of a merciless beating he had recently given her. On the way to the station houso, he accused his wifo and all her Bisters of being improper characters.

It appears that his wifo has been living, a groat part of the time, without food or Ore. and the officers say she preaouls a wretched appearance. Justice Soulier fully committed Valentino for examination. SUPPLIES COnSllTTEE. Procefdina TUeir Meeting To day.

Evarts Secretary of State, Sherman Secretary of Treasury, Scliurz Secretary of Interior, Dick Thompson Secretary of the Mary, Judge Dovens Attorney General, ex Senator Key Postmaster General, Mr. McCrary Secretary of War. Ex President Grant sat beside Mr. Couklmg in tho Senate to day. i Senator requires a special chair, 33 inches by 25 inches in size. i The best iufomicd pereonn declare that Mr. Hayes stands out, firm againal both the throats and the bland ishmonts of the Senatorial Group aud that ho is "rjct tins tuad." Ha will, it Is eaid, put tho responsibility of rejecting his Cabinet nominations on tho Sonate.

Morton asked Hayes to give cither Tyner, Tom, Nelson or Dica Thompson, of Indiana, a. Cabinet place. Hayes selected Thompson, and is said to ba "saiisflod but not gratified." Hayes' friends state that he offered Cabinet places to throe Jlaino men in suceesjion. They declined, and Hayes tben docliaed to lei Blaino shove Pryo on bini. Hence Blaine's "break." The published siatemenls thai Secretary Chandler yesterday tendered "a peremptory resignation," aud "left the Interior Department never to return," aro wholly unfounded, excopt to tho extont that he, in common with all tho other members of President Granfs Cabinet, sent to President Hayes their resignations, as is usual upon the expiration of the term of tho President who appointed them. Tho facte are that the latter and Herbert reaided in the some house for somo time and had some money transactions.

Mr. Dilley, believing that ho had a just claim on Herbert, rofuBed to allow the latter to remove from tbe houso two trunks, containing wearing apparel, valued at $100, until the debt was naid.
