Since our charity program amounts to $120,000.00 yearly, and the mail campaign is the major portion of the income for this program, it is hoped that at least $75,000.00 will he realized, continued Mapson. THE DOCTOR SAYS, WALK, DONT RIDE Walk up stairs, urges Dr. Joseph T.

Freeman of Philadelphia. He contends that bone defects occur less often in persons who climb apartment house stairs than those who live in single-story homes. Steps, Dr. Freeman says, are an ideal exercise to retain muscle tone and keep a sound bone1 structure. Elevators, escalators and ramps may make life easier, he says, but he doubts that they make it any healthier.

A. APPEL SY 9-2289 813 Fair Oaks Avenue The school doctor if he detects a heart murmur, will usually suggest that the family physician chock it. Parents should always feel free 1o discuss with their doctors, any doubts or fears, they may have about his' findings. For the child with an innocent heart murmur, a parents uncertainty can be most unfortunate. A fearful mother, alarmed by.

the word murmur can turn a normal healthy child into a coddled youngster, with an imagined heart condition. The child with an innocent murmur, according to the best medical does not have heart disease, nor is he more likely to have it than other children. He or she can be as active as any other well child should be. New Heart Association leaflet, entitled Innocent Heart Murmurs in Children is available free of charge, through the West San Gabriel Valley Council, 258 South Los Robles, Pasadena, Calif. If You ard to Buy or Sell It, Here's the Place to Tell It I BY TbzOMlwM, From A.

J. Swanson, Duluth, Minnesota: I remember how il was in the old days. Houses were cheap to build, aa they had no basements, no central heating plant, no plumbing, water gas, electric lights or telephones and the dinky street cara which held only 50 people, and had a heating stove in the center of the car. Many times a bunch oi young people coming home from a party late at night would stand in the rear vestibule and as they sang they would start bouncing, sometimes causing the car to jump the track. I remember White City at Park Point, also the regattas and the sailing boats and the excursion steamers that went up the river to Fond du Lac.

It was the biggest day of the summer for us kids as, once a year, the boat would be chartered and up the river we went on our Sunday School picnic. I remember the shows that played when the old town was in its heyday. There were two vaudeville shows, one stock company, one road show each week, not to mention burlesque, all playing at the same time. When Ben Hur played at the Lyceum, it took a solid box car for the scenery alone and they had actual horses on stage for the chariot race, using a treadmill for the track. The younger generation, with all their movies, will never know a greater thrill than that which comes from a real stage show with real musicians playing a stirring overture as the curtain slowly rises.

There was no canned acting or canned music. Everything was real, put on by real people in the flesh and blood. Living With Your Heart presented by J. Douglas McNair, M.D. Chairman, Public Education Committee West San Gabriel Valley Council of the Los Angeles County Heart Association Your child has a heart murmur. These words from a physician will immediately conjure up all sorts of anxious mental pictures in the minds of parents. However, when the doctor says a child has an innocent heart murmur there is no cause for alarm.

This kind of murmur is harmless and often occurs in childhood. It is sometimes described as a functional murmur. So common are innocent heart murmurs in childhood, that more than half of any group of 100 children are likely to have them at some time. Most occur between the ages of three and seven. Murmur is a word used by doctors to describe sounds other than those usually heard, produced by the circulation of blood through the valves and channels of the heart.

Innocent murmums are harmless and, although their exact cause is unknown they generally disappear during adolescence. A few children however, will have murmurs that are diagnosed as organic, indicating that a heart ailment or defect may be present. Children with organic murmurs should be under the supervision of a physician. Early treatment increases the possibility that the underlying heart condition causing the murmur can be improved, arrested or corrected. Although many children have innocent heart murmurs, and relatively few have organic murmurs, it is frequently difficult to distinguish between the two.

Innocent murmurs may be heard after exercise, or a restless youngster may be difficult to examine. For these reasons, more than one examination may be needed to confirm that a murmur is innocent.
