BRIDGEPORT SUNDAY POST, OCTOBER 9, 1960 D--THREE BRIDGEPORT BATTLES HOFSTRA TO SCORELESS TIE Underdogs Snap 14 Game Streak of Long Island Team The defensive line of the University of Bridgeport football team staged ils second goal line stand of the game to thwart a late drive by Hofstra College and gain a oveted 0-0 deadlock with the undefeated, previously untied Dutchmen last night at Hedges Stadium before a crowd of 4,000 fans. In the fourth quarter, the visiting Hofstra squad drove from its own 25 to the UB eight yard line, and had a first down and goal. Three tries at the dogged defenders failed to produce a touchdown, and senior center Burt Swerdling attempted a field goal, which was wide, and the "Knights took over on their own 20. Earlier in the contest. Bridgeport's defense halted Hofstra inside the UB 10.

and in all. the offense-minded visitors gained only 183 yards on the ground and 99 yards by passing. Statistically, the Dutchmen held a wide margin first downs to five for the home forces. Norm Pederson played an alert game in the Knights' secondary, intercepting three passes, and the punting of sub quarterback John Hutchinson helped keep the Knights out of a hole. Hutchinson averaged 47 yards per kick, and drove Hofstra deep into its own territory on two occasions.
