Jean Gabin Noted Frenc PARIS (AP) Jean Cabin, one of the biggest and most durable stars of the French film world, died this morning at the American Hospital after a heart attack. He was 72, had spent 54 years in the entertainment world and had made about 300 movies.

Gabin entered the hospital in suburban Neuilly Saturday evening, suffering from very high blood pressure. His notable film appearances included the deter mined- to- survive foot soldier in "Grand Illusion," Jean Valjean in Miserables," Georges Sim- enon's Inspector Maigret, the Algerian outlaw Pepe le Moko, "Crime and Punishment," the Mafia chief in "The Sicilian Clan," and the embittered old husband in "The Cat," for which he received the Best Actor Award at the 1971 Berlin Film Festival. Born Jean-Alexis Moncorge, Gabin took the stage name of his father, a music hall entertainer, when he himself went on the stage. His mother was a nger. After working as a mason and warehouse clerk, Gabin gave in to parental urging in 1922 and tried the entertainment field, starting with a walk-on role in the Folies Bergere.

He sang in a revue with Mis- tinguette, appeared in music halls alongside Fernandel, Bourvil and Raimu, and worked in operettas. Turning to the movies in 1930 at the start of the talking picture era, he abandoned the stage and devoted himself exclusively to the new medium. One of his directors, the great Jean Renoir, said of him: "Jean Gabin does not fit into the skin of a character, he composes the character and creates it from the start. The extent of emotions he can furnish is immense. His whole art is in delivering only the essential." Away from the film set, Gabin refused to play the part of a star.

He wanted only the company of his family and a few friends and said, "It's too tiresome to be friendly." His great passion was his farm in Normandy, where he raised race horses. Even there he was an outsider, and young farmers once invaded his property to protest that he was buying up too much farm land. Tax collectors and politicians were among his pet hates. He said tax collectors "take practically everything I earn and oblige me to work when I am past 70 years old." Politicians, he said, were "bad actors and dangerous, moreover. For us, actors, when we are bad at least it is inoffensive."
