ALAMEDA DAIEV AUOL'N: THITK8DA JL'XE 2it I fiUlt griffes murder Highest of all in Leavening Tower Latest Report Bakin A SHOPPING TOWN ABSOLUTELY PURE 'could not make any answer I dropp'd the telephone and started up (lay street I knew then that Hometiling must lmve happ'ited to my wife I could form iui idea as to what it was or bow it had oecured and even when they told me she bud liecn murdered I eould only realize that she was dead only looked enough to satisfy myself there eould no mistake I saw nothing except that the wife I loved had been lost to me I seemed to Ik in a dream Some one told me the man who bad killed her was in the pridmi but I care for that Kate was dead There was too much sorrow in that thought for me to think of anything else 1 did not ask even to look at tin man and I did not listen to all they told me about what lmd lmpKiied The only ay I can imagine such a thing eould occur is through the fact that come one must have given my wife something to drink If she took two glasses of iwer it had an effect on her and I have more than once cautioned our friends not to ask her to drink She never drank much The least bit would upset her and It may be that this fellow in someway induced her to take a drink and that lie then hud her in hi whisky half a dozen times ami about midnight lie suggested that they have the place as In wanted to clow the saloon The woman bad liecn in the saloon before and recalled the fact to DhvIh by stating that site bad Itccil introduced Col Hates ami wife in bom she had uccompuhied to ho resort on previous occasion Slit -stated that she was not going to take the last boat as she intend'd remaining in the eity with Mrs Baton' mother and di-played a Itenuliful bouquet of dowers that she bad brought from Alameda which she was going to give to the lady The couple remained in the saloon drinking even until the last street ear hud left the ferry ami nothing more was thought about the matter until the saloon-keeper ami one of the patrons of the place saw leaving the saloon alone am) disappear in the darkness It was at once suspected thut something was wrong and when the saloonkeeper went to the room he waa compelled to push the door open The woman lay there dead bathed in blood with her garments disarranged ami the bouquet scattered around the lloor It was not realized that the deed had been such an atrocious one until an autopsy was held yesterday at the morgue the injuries that caused ttu uterine hemorrhage having leen caused by a stick or some blunt instrument It was evident that there had been a struggle although the saloonkeeper avers he heard nothing A waiter in the cafe adjoining heard stilled cries and moans beyond the partition The face was also marked as if hy a hand that was used to slide her attempted alurm 'Hie murderer was promptly captured and although very much under the influence of liquor he knew enough to refrain from telling the story of the crime Mrs Grilles was a native of Gcrmun-town la where Nhe met and married her husband in iMHo They came to Sail Francisco in lHDl and their residence lias been in this city since that time The woman who first identilled the remains Have One Next Winter The Midwinter International Exposition to be Its Imposing Name There is now no doubt at all but that a large part of tlie Fair is to be brought to California and exhibited next winter Tlie official name of the exhibition has been decided upon It is to he known as the California International Midwinter It is to be located in Golden Gate Park the Commissioners having set aside fifty acres of the unimproved portion for the exposition buildings and grounds Everybody who has visited the park knows that not one-half of it 1 as yet subdued and covered with trees shrubs and grass Tlie exposition buildings will be just beyond the improved portion but will themselves constitute so fine an improvement that they will make a very agreeable continuation of that portion of tlie park that is now so pleasant Those at the head of the project have not exactly settled upon the buildings yet but it is likely there will be four temporary buildings nnd one permanent structure Herr Comely who seems to be at the head of things isa man of great experience in the management of expositions and must have wonderful executive ability for within an inconceivably short time lie has demonstrated to the people of California and the country that a midwinter fair composed of the best things at the Fair is perfectly feasible and may he easily accomplished Mrs I Chandler of this city has been Trusted His Wife Her Absence Did Not Surprise Him Discovery of Her Death nn Awful Shock II (trifles Inislmmi of (he woman whose awful murder in San Francisco oil Tuesday evening is the sensation of the hour bus talked In a reporter ngni'ding bis wife bis domestic life aial the dreadful crime The Grilles resided in Alameda in neat eiittiufc 1714 Jay street where they had lived for twoycurswith their child They are quite young people The husband js scarcely more that twcnty-cij'lit years of age while the wife was twenty-six Not one of the pictures of her in this morning's newspapers does her justice or looks like her She was of good figure and while her features were not handsome she had a picasing way Mr (bides was a journalist and was ut work on the Call when the murder was committed His story is as follows am utterly at a loss to account for Hitch thing happening tomy wife There has never any trouble come into our married life and I do not believe therein a husband and wife in San Francisco who enjoyed each society more than we had always done She was not yet thirty years of age and to my eyes she was just us handsome us when I first met her in (Jermmitmvn Pa more than ten years ago She was always full of fun hut so am I and I never had reason to think she whs anything hut a faithful wife When we llrst came to San Fran-cIhco we lived at (513 Eddy street and afterwards on Holden Hate avenue We always lmd plenty of friends ami Kate was fond of company She seemed to like nothing better than to have people come in ill the evening otto have me get a night and go out with her Our little girl was horn in Chicago and ia now three years old Kate dearly loved to take the baby out with her They both went down to os Angeles with me when I was there for a few months und when we came hack we moved over to Alameda There was no reason why I did not want to live in Sail Francisco except that wu all liked Alameda so much better ns a place to live It was rather hard sometimes when my work made me miss the lust boat but we made up for It by getting all the enjoyment we could out of our life across the hay when I did get home On Monday my wife enme over to the city to call on Mrs Dr Burns an old friend of ours out on Marketstreet and she onine down to my odlee so ns to go over on the bout with me When we got homo it was such a beautiful moonlight night that we look a long walk before going Into tho house That was our lust moonlight ramble Next morning we picked a lot of flowers 8hc wanted me to bring them over to J)r Burns but I said they would keep fresh until Tuesday and then she would probably want to take another run over herself So 1 kissed her ami the baby good-hy and came over on the noon boat night I had to stay over to finish nn article and did not get back home until Tuesday night at 11:30 Tlie baby was in bed sleeping as sweetly as could be but Kate was not there I knew however that she was going to take the flowers over to Nana (Mrs Burns) and I supposed of course they had coaxed her to stay all night Slie often stayed there and it caused me no uneasiness at all to find that she did not come home 1 got over early and I thought I would go up to und arrange with Kate to stay over till night and go hack on the boat with me Nairn was out when I got there and her assistant told me she had not seen my wile at all Even this did not alarm me for Kate had plenty of friends in the eity and she might have gone up to Mrs on California street Mrs Hates is Dr Burns daughter We all used to live in the same house on (Jolden (late avenue and they afterwards lived near us in Alameda for a while She might have gone there or to one of (wo or three other place where we lmd friends So I said to myself hunt me up before she goes and I went oil down to the olliee daring the day I had a call nt the telephone I thought at once that it was Kate and that she wanted to tell mo where to meet her The first call was about newspaper business The second call came while I was at work at my desk at about 7:30 the I my told me I was wanted at the telephone 1 took hold of the hand telephone and a voice said: is Grilles said 1 Grilles? II Yes" Mr Grilles will yon please conic up to the Morgue? What for? said I Wc want you to indeiitify some do I know about any one at the Morgue I asked think you had better come up the Coroner wants to see said the voice and then there came over the wire a quest hm that nearly knocked mo over senseless long since seen your wife Mr Grilles to that time I had not connected Kate with the murderer Imt now my heart leaped up in my mouth I The Woman a Resident of Alameda 5 ie Resided With Her Husband and Child on Jay Street of the Awful Deed Tlio story of tliu ditiltolictil murder of a woman in (lit Grizzlry Hoar Saloon on tin San Fnincbco water fi-onl ha an Alameda siU to it The woman was a resilient of this ritv She was Mrs Kate Irilles ami lived with live husband and child in a neat cottni'e Iwlmming to them at 1714 Jay street jut north of Ihicna Vista avenue Mr and Mis Gride num to Alameda about two years mro and ahoiit a year ago they purchased the hoint? in which they lived from Joo Yasqtiez of the contracting Drill of A- Remind Mr i rides isa newspaRer limn ami i now employed on the San Fraiicmco full Helms written several stories for that paper from Alameda The couple were not very well acquainted in this city but from what can be learned they lived quietly together and the woman weenis to have been regarded as a respectable and well-behaved person and a good wife Her husband being employed on a morning paper was always away at nihl and saw little of his home as he left for the eity every morning about 11 He was seen this morning at his home by ail Argus representative and seemed to take the mutter of his death rather complacently The story he tells appears in another column He could volunteer no theory as to the cause of the crime Hedidnot think that his wife knew the murderer at least he hud never heard of Hindi a person lie said that when he enme home at a late hour and did not find her lie was not suprised as it was frequently the ease that sin went to ho eity and remained liori with friends When his wife did not return on Tuesday night Mr trilles apparently did not concern himself very much as to her whereabouts It was not until yesterday that be discovered that the woman whom he read about in the morning pa pew as having been foully murdered and who lay imidenti lied at the morgue was none other than his wife Mr (rides was in Alameda yesterday morning and paid an installment on his House Ho remarked incidentally that he expected to leave In the ufterunon for Log Angeles It was not until he had gone to the eity that he discovered that his wife lmd been murdered It appears that the murdered woman spent but little time in Alameda She took the loeal bmadgunge train at Jhiy station almost every day Sometimes she went alone and at other limes attended by her flaxen-haired little girl of three years The last time she took the train was Tuesday night She went over alone on the 8 o'clock train and on the boat who met the man who cruelly assaulted ami killed her He was Martin who was employed as foreman in the galvanizing department of the Tnion Iron Works in San Francisco He isa man probably years of age and has a wife and grown up family residing at 022 Chestnut street Oakland The couple lmd been separated and proceedings for a divorce had been commenced some time ago by the deserted wife had bjen in Oakland on Tuesday evening and returned also on the 8 boat It is not known whether or not the couple who had thus met had had any previous acquaintance denies ever having seen the woman before but it does not seem reasonable that a respectable married woman would accompany a stranger into a water front saloon and there drink whisky with him from until one in the morning It appears that they went at once from the ferry to the saloon at 11 South East street kept by man named Divis They entered by the entrance passageway and took pons s-aion of a small side room The barkeeper served them with For Constipation Pills For Dyspepsia Pills For Biliousness Pills For SIGNS Superintendent Frodden Presents a Rreport to the Trustees At the sjccial meeting of the Municipal Hoard last night Superintendent of Streets Frodden reported as follows concerning the awnings in front of business houses which lie wus previously instructed to inspect AlaMKDA June 28th 1893 7b (he (he Hoard of run- tar tf the City of Alameda Gentlemen In compliance with your order for me to inspect the wooden awnings over the sidewalks on Hark street I beg leave to report that the awning in front of the Smith Block on the west side of Park street between Railroad and Haeide avenues is in a very dungerous condition also what remains in front of the Park Opera House The awning in front of Mrs brick building on west side of Hark street between Hank street and Railroad avenue Is not in a very safe condition for anybody to walk on without breaking through also the awning which is used as a balcony ill front of Mr Nobmunn's building on the east side of Hark street and Railroad avenue appears to be unsafe The awning in front of the building oil the southeast cornet' of Hark street and Webb avenue I do not consider safe for anybody to walk on In fact there are very few awnings that would he safe fur any great number of persons get on to without dungcr of breaking down The argument will he made that these awnings arc not constructed for persons to get on to or to walk on but suppose there should be a lire in any of these buildings and our firemen would have to climb over these dangerous awnings to bring their hose lip on the roof or in the upper stories of these buildings they would surely go through I have not been on top any of those awning but from observations taken from the street and sidewalk those I have mentioned look to me the most dangerous I would respectfully recommend that your Honorable Body request those property owners to remove those (langir ms awnings and to pass an ordinance prohibiting any further construction of wooden awnings over the sidewalks in tills city and I would further recomend that no heavy wooden signs lie hung or put across any sidewalk There are some very heavy signs now hanging on a small wire across the walk on
