champion Ives and Wilbur Edwards came to the scratch Ives was the champion yesterday and he entered to hold his laurels but the pace was too hot for him He and Foster started in together and evidently expected to come in together so (hat both could enter the fiual But Wilbur Edwards was with them and as the gong rang for the fourth lap there was a spurt Edwards made for the lead and Foster found it necessary to leave the champion to eayo himself The Alameda boy showed hia speed then amid the most hearty cheers lie was the winner in 2 :47 2 5 with Edwards but a fow yards behind and Ives third a champion no more ThoflnnU were called after the ordinary race and the quartette came to the mark for the fiual struggle looking as fresh as ever Foster was rouudly cheered and Bell had many friends STIUCTCH while Edwards was looked upon as a dark horse lie is a graceful and easy' rider Smith was the fourth man also from the Garden City club The Alameda wonder took the lend from the start but the others were hot on his trail lie knew the track and was there to win He was too speedy for the visitors and the enthusiastic cheers urged him to his best It was a thrilling event aud the quartette whirled along the oblong track with ever increasing speed There was no slackening of speed at the banked turns and no cessation of enthusiasm on the part of the shouting people The race was soon over und the championship wou by Alameda Foster was lifted from his wheel aud carried on the shoulders of friends to his quarters Edwards was a good second anil Bell third THREE MllF OltniNAHY championship After a briof season of rest during which tiie band played and the multitude of people began to realize how they had been sizzling in the sun and sought the gradually lengthening shade the second championship race was announced It was on ordinaries and a three mile race Lipsolt of the Garden City Cyclers was the champion It was quite a change to see the racers perched on the high wheels and they rode a pretty race bunched together as they spun around the course There were eight of them Lund David Marshall Fpsou Brown Pickard II Smith Wui Lipsett and A Desimone It was a close contest for several laps but at the end of a couple of miles they began to string along tho course and finally dropout Lund of the Acmeclub made the throe miles in 1-5 lowering tbo coast record over a second Upton of the Capital City Wheelmen was second Smith of tho Garden City third and Champion Lipsett fourth TWO MM SAFETY HANIffCA There were twenty-throe outlies in the two-mile safety handicap and a Buy City Wheelmen second and Vim Wyck of the Acmes third the latter having a handicap of 2( yards None of the men were starlcd nt the scratch In the second heat the contestants dwindled down to three Another Brilliant Success When the orchestra struck up the grata! march at the dance in (lie pavilion at Sdinetzen Park tho floor was crowded with promenading couples while all the available seats were occupied by dancers and spectators Tho crowd was almost too big for an enjoyable dunce but despite this fact every person who had a soul for music danced and some keeping it up until tho music is tho capable news editor of that paper Young Cardinet started out in the parade with his ancestral bicycle made in Franco 50 years ago It was too much work and Cardinot was unulde to keep up with the proccssiou Whiskers Bouton of the Oakland wheelmen made quite a showing in the two-mile safoty handicap He was tunning behind when the crowd began lo yell "Go It up Wind Thus encouraged Boulou unido ft spur! passed the leaders and won tho heat A cheer went up for hiskers But he lost the raco It was openly charged hv ft number of persons that an agreement had been made by Walter Foster and Grant Bell the respective winners of the one-mile and live-mile scratch safety races whereby each was to allow tlio other tu gel his Erutninrr There Is not a particle of truth in the above paragraph so far as Waller Foster is concerned Every raco that Foster enters he goes to win It is fully for any one to say that a man alio was a raco would remount a second wheel after a pneumatic tiro on his first collapsed und then purposely throw himself while going at full speed A man who falls down while riding in a bicycle race is liable to break an arm or leg or perchance his neck No one who knows Foster will believe that ho would run any hut a square race Knapp (a San Francisco cyclist) was the mime of tlmt ridiculous young man who kept tho score board aud used such had grammar When Knapp announced the result of a heat ho would say naming tho heat by whoever won it did vousay won it? somebody would shout from tho grand stand Theymtng man would change his face with one of his sweetest
