morning appeared before Judge Dunne for arraignment on three indictments charging him with accepting a bribe from the officials of the San Francisco Gas and Electric Company After the reading his attorney secured a continuance until Wednesday morning The Mayor as usual was the first to entxr the courtroom this morning He has not looked so down hearted since the beginning of his trial IN IGEEESS CONDITION It looks now from the number of people who are beginning to work for the project as if Alameda were really to have a playground and park The Council members have been agitating the matter steadily and yesterday they gained some powerful allies by enlisting several well known women in the ranks of those who feel that the Taylor-Dunn tracts are the most desirable for the needs Reasons For Inviting Ladies Council President Loop has been especially anxious that the Council should interest the women of Alameda In the acquisition of a park for the reason that they have more leisure than the business men to enjoy such a park when acquired Then too women are naturally desirous of Buch a spot for the good of their children Adelphians Especially Interested It may not be generally known that for seven years the Civic Section of the Adeiphian Club has been devoting a considerable amount of time to this very question The two tracts they have had in mind are the Thompson property on High street and these very two pieces on avenue Of course the City Council knew that women who were public spirited enough to continue their Interest through seven years were the very ones to give an impetus to the movement already on foot and so they were the first ones invited to go and look over the property Personnel of the Party Haslett who is heartily in sympathy with the Council in their efforts very generously offered his machine to take the ladies down to the place of meeting Sumner Loop and Chipman were on the ground at 5 yesterday to greet the party Mrs Teller Mrs Robert the story of whose adventure with a Yosemite Valley highwayman was published In Argus have written to Alameda relatives a further account of their startling experience The referred to In the letter is Mr brother-in-law Torpey who with Mrs Torpey Is with the Clarks The letter reads "Arrived at Wawona last night after a very exciting day At ten yesterday morning our stages were held up We certainly had a little more than we bargained for I fully understand now how one man can hold up so many people We were In the first stage He stepped out from the brush with rifle pointed at us at the same time saying It took us all so by surprise that we did not at once obey when he repeated up your hands damn you I tell you "It take long after that till our hands were all up Then we had to get out hands up eyes to the ground Ed had to carry the sack to each one and they were supposed to put all the money they had in It but I can tell you It was a brave crowd and a good cool one The men only put in a little $650 Is all A lost and each one alike He then made us stand with hands up eyes on the ground until he held up the other stage that had by this time come up in bai of us He was dressed in blue overalls and jumper His face and head were done up In a handkerchief so that he was completely hidden He had holes cut for his eyes and black glasses on his feet all tied up In sacks a belt of cartridges around his waist and a brand new rifle We feel now thut all came out so well that it was worth while for the experience There was much about It that can be better described when we tell It on our return Lots of fun with it all Every time we meet any of the crowd we Immediately hold hands "This Is a lovely place Wo have been out to the Big Trees all day and Just got back Tomorrow we leave for Yosemite and will get there about one From this on all Is osyned by the government and guarded by soldiers trip was pleasant until we were held up and has been all right since parting with that bold bad man He was a young fellow I think he could be over twenty-five years of age We heard today that they were on his trail and I hope they will catch Bf FERERAL COURT which would give ua a magnificent sandy beach and then have all klncft of -bathing facilities What could ek-cel such a park where all could come and indulge in sports lounge under the trees and finally take a plunge in the bay? We would have a modern up-to-date bath house which would be let by the city as a concession under the supervision of the city so that no undesirable element could be admitted or liquor Two Civic Sect ionist Talk Mrs Teller said after seeing the beauties of the proposed park in detail "The acquisition of this property by the city wmuld be the realization of the fondest dream of the Civic Section of the Adeiphian Club We women have been working on this project for seven years and now it seems as if at last our labors were to be Mrs Hebard who is another Civic Section worker said can not believe that the citizens will miss this chance to add a feature to Alameda that will certainly attract the right kind of people Every town about this bay is making a mighty effort to gain some of the new people who are flocking to this state and we afford to sit back and let them outstrip us in the Others Equally Enthusiastic have not been long a resident of responded Mrs Thieme in answer to a question I certainly think that this city should have a park for nearly every place you go to they have a park nowradays and this is perfect in every way it seems to Mrs Robert said among other things "What is the expenditure of $115000 to the good that would accrue to this city from such a park? It is our last chance to have a park that possesses both trees and water advantages and we simply must have it Then too it is a very reasonable price as I understand and much less than it has been purchasable for in the Mrs Tisdale expressed herself as enthusiastically as the rest of the party "Alameda sat back and allowed other bay towns to boom themselves Into prominence and she said "and we must stop right now before the tide sets away from us The possession and Improvement of such a park as this would bo a long step in the right direction I never imagined there was such a combination of trees playground and water front to be had in this Christian Radzwiil Thinks Children Should Pay Him for Property Improvements- Mrs Mary Martin Compromises With Woodmen Order for Twelve Hundred Wife in Alameda are perfect in spread and shape All of the party felt th'xt it would be little short of criminal to allow this last remnant of the once luxuriant oak growth that covered the entire island to be sacrificed to the axe and that the land should be bought to preserve the trees if nothing else It was very noticeable that though a stiff breeze was blowing the trees and the location of the land seemed to effectually breuk the wind so that It was delightfully warm Playground Iooked Over The party next looked over the Dunn tract which has about six and a half acres In it and voted it an ideal playground It is large enough to allow of a baseball game tennis games cinder path indeed all kinds of sports to be In progiess at the same time and Is as big a play ground as is owned by many great cities The best feature of this land for a playground is that it is all clean'd and level and a ory small expenditure of money would put it in readiness for immediate use The other tract
