Thursday, January 7, 19SS A-5 International diploma course sets Bonita Vista apart Anthony TRUJILLO In addition to the required courses, the I.B. Diploma candidate takes a unique course on the philosophy of learning; prepares a research paper and participates in a creative, aesthetic or social service activity. Bonita Vista High also works closely with the local community. The school partnership with the Bonita Business and Professional Association has been a positive experience for all concerned. Under the direction of principal, Manuel Llera, Bonita Vista High School continues to provide unique and rigorous learning opportunities for students.

The district congratulates the students, staff and parents of Bonita Vista High School for their support and enthusiasm: Cut-out and save a JANUARY 1988 There has been much talk about excellence in education. In 1983, California initiated educational reform efforts which emphasized raising standards and strengthening the curriculum. Instructional time has increased, enrollment in academic courses has risen and major curriculum areas have been strengthened. The schools in the Sweetwater Union High School District are meeting the challenges of the reform movement. Bonita Vista High School, our spotlight school this week, has adopted a school mission statement of Setting the Standard for Excellence.

Bonita Vista High opened in 1968 and today has an enrollment of 1,484. The school has developed a variety of programs to meet the needs of the diverse student population as well as to challenge them academically. One can hardly mention Bonita Vista without recognizing the accomplishments of the Music Machine. This talented performing group, under the direction of Ron Bolles, is well known throughout the community. In Program.

In June 1985, Bonita Vista High School was authorized1 by the International Baccalaureat office in Geneva. Switzerland, to prepare students for the Intifcia-tional Baccalaureate Diploma. In so doing, Bonita Vista High School became the fourth school in California to participate iilhis globally recognized program. Mrs. Paula Bingftfm, counselor, serves as adviser for the I.B.

program. Bonita Vista will host a special reception in February for the I.B. Conference. The I.B. diploma is recognized for admission and advanced standing (as much as one year) by such diverse and prestigious institutions as Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, CalTech, the University of California and the Sorbonne.

The program encompasses all the traditional courses of study incorporating multi-cultural perspectives and internationally based standards of achievement. Naturally, foreign language is required. Sweetwiter District Superintendent addition, the Music Machine has received national recognition for their singing and dance performances. As mentioned in an earlier column, Bonita Vista High School has included in its enrollment students from the Special Abilities Cluster. These students represent the severely handicapped.

There have been numerous opportunities for these specially challenged students to mix with students from the regular program. This has provided a tremendous learning experience for all of the students involved. The Bonita Vista program also includes Gifted and Talented Education and an Advanced Placement Program.
