In a majority of instances opening prices were higher than the previous close, but they soon turned back. Baldwin Locomotive opened up at 89, then sold at 8934, only to fall back to Thursdays lust price. Independent steels were heavy and Bethlehem made an early low at 54. Mexican Petroleum was up at 115) but then dropped below 115. Steel common was firm and the first sale was up at 78.

Railroad stocks were slightly lower. The opening prices included: Studebaker 76, up Northern Pacific 77, off Texas co 36, up Southern Pacific 77, unchanged; American Locomitive 99, unchanged; Crucible Steel 61, up Industrial Alcohol 48, off Reading 71, up General Motors 10, up U. 8. Rubber' 49, off Asphalt 51, up Kelly Springfield 42, unchanged; American Woolen 75, unchanged. The list sagged off in the early afternoon trading.

Baldwin reacted from 91 to 89. International Paper was strong, selling up to 51. The market closed dull. Closing prices included: U. S.

News from Argentine that rains which have aidl the wheat crop have ceased and reports from Canda of a large wheat supply also contributed to the bull market. Provisions were ii regular.

organize a public utility district to be known as Carmichael Public Utility District to comprise the above described territory, all of which is unincorporated and none of which is now within any other public utility district now formed or about to be. These proposals are for furnishing electric current for power and lighting at the new Filtration Plant Pumping Station Works of the Citv of Sacramento, expected to be placed in service January 1, 1922. The Station is arranged in twe separate north and south halves. both hydraulically and electrically, provision for two incoming sources of power service, but both halves are interconnected so that each half may operate independently of the other or both halves may operate in parallel from either source of power Propositions are desired for: (1) Furnishing all power consumed. (2) Furnishing continuously approximately half of operating load on either half of the station, the other half to be operated by jwor furnished by another Power Company, but with provision for furnishing all power consumed in case of emergency. prospective bidders are requested to visit the pumping and filtration site to become familiar with the conditions affecting service of power.

Drawings showing wiring and power layout and other Information may be obtained at the office of the Filtration Division. Propositions shall state the prices in terms of maximum demand during a minimum interval of 30 minutes each month and the prices in terms of current consumed eaon month, all as registered at the point of metering specified. Alternative proposals may be submitted under either or both propositions for furnishing power for periods of one, two, three, and five years but no proposition for furnishing power beyond a period of five years is desired Information for Bidders is to be otdained from the City Engineer. Kellogg were forwarded to Oakland Friday for burial there. The body will rest beside that of bis late wile, Mary Kellogg, in Mountain View cemetery. Jas. Garlick had charge of the shipment. Kellogg succumbed at the Sisters hospital here Thursday, after an illness that had extended over the last month.

He was a native of New York and had resided in Oakland previous to his residence in this city. Here he was engaged as painter and lived at 1021 10th-st. His age was 65 years. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Chas.

Stahiman and Mrs. E. Burba uan. Funeral services for Mollle L. Hill will take place in Suisun Sunday afternoon after the body has been removed there by Clark, Booth Yardley, directors, in this city.

The shipment will take place on the 3:15 train Saturday afternoon. From 11 a. m. to 1:30 m. of the same day the body will lie at rest in the parlors of the funeral director for friends to visit Mrs.

Hill was the wife of Andrew C. Hill and the sister of Mrs. H. B. Sheldon, Mrs.

Earl Lawrence, Mrs. Alice McLaughlin, H. and Jas. C. Loney.

She was 45 years of age and a native of this state. Services for Chas. Anderson, who died will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 oclock in the funeral parlors of Armstrong Bader. Anderson w-as 68 years old and a native of Sweden. He was the husband of Caroline Anderson and the father of Albt.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Mannick and son of Cleveland, Ohio, are guests of Dr. and Mrs.

F. W. Hub-kusman. Mrs. Mannick is a sister of Mrs Ilubkusman.

Mrs. Mary Olmstead has returned to Bakersfield after spending several months as the guest of her daughter, Mrs. W. C. Shackelton.

Mrs. Charles Lavine and sons are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A.

Wilson. Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Hazel Batt to Boyce Campbell in Oroville on Sept. 3rd. The wedding is the culmination of a schoolday romance. Mrs.

Campbell will act as principal of the Orangevale school this year, which position she has held for the past two years. Miss Amy Metcalfe spent te week end in Colma as the guest of her brother. Mif. Helen Ireland and children have returned to Bakersfield after a months visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Resolution of Intention No. 1555 RESOLVED, by the City Council, of the City of Sacramento, that the work hereinafter mentioned is of more than local and ordinary public benefit, and that the public interest and convenience require that said work be done, and that it is the intention of the said City Council to order the same to be done in pursuance of an' Act of the Legislature of the State of California, known as the Improvement Act of 1911, approved April 7th, 1911, and the several Acts amendatory thereof and supplemental thereto to wit: 'Improving 5th Strtot In the City of Sacramento, from the Southerly line of Street to the Northerly line of Street, except that portion required by law- to bo kept in order and repair by any company or persons having railroad tracks thereon, by removing and disposing of all refuse and surplus material, constructing concrete curb wall, constructing concrete curbs and gutters on official line and grade where the same do not exist on official line and grade: placing cast iron gutter drains and connecting same to sewer with six (6) inch vitrified ironstone sewer pipe; grading the roadway and constructing thereon an asphaltic concrete pavement six (6) inches in thickness.

All of said work shall be done in accordance with plans and specifications adopted for doing said work and now on file in the office of the City Engineer. Notice is hereby given to nil Carsons interested that on Thursday. the 29th day of September, 1921, at 9 o'clock P. in the Council Chamber of the City Council of the City of Sacramento, in the City Hall, on 'T Street, between 9th and 36th Streets, any a. all persons having any objections to the proposed work and improvement may appear before the said City Council and show cause why said proposed work and improvement shall not be carried out in accordance with this resolution.

All protests must be In writing and delivered to City Clerk. Notice is hereby given that serial bonds to represent unpaid assessments and bear interest at the late of seven (7) per cent per annum will be Issued hereunder in the manner provided by the Improvement Bond Act of 1915, the last installment of which bonds shall mature nine (9) years from the second day of July next succeeding nine (9) months from their date. The City Clerk is hereby directed to post this resolution conspicuously for two days near the door the Council hamber of the City Council; also to publish the same for two days in the Sacramento fctar. a daily newspaper, as required by law. Scaled proposals for constructing the Filtered Water Basin of the Filtration Plant, endorsed, proposal for Constructing the Filtered Water Basin, Filtration Division, City of Sacramento, California, Contract No. 21, addressed to the City Clerk, will be received at the office of the City Clerk, City Hall, Sacramento, California, until 9:00 P. M. M. The Filtered Water Basin Is a concrete basin with a flat slab roof to hold about 5,000,000 gallons of water. The base dimensions are 148 feet by 296 feet 10 inches and the over-all height is 19 feet 6 inches. The main excavation Is to be performed under another contract. Time of completion is of the essence of the contract.

Each proposal must be accompanied by a certified check, made payable to the City Clerk, City of Sacramento, California, in the sum of ten (10) per cent of the contract price. A faithful performance bond, amounting to fifteen (15) per cent of the contract price, and a material and labor bond amounting to fifty (50) per cent of the contract price will be required of the successful bidder, in accordance with the provisions of the City Charter aud ordinances and of State Laws. Prior to the acceptance of the completed work a defective material and workmanship bond amounting to five (5) per cent of the amount of the contract must be furnished. Funds for payment of this work must be obtained from the sale of Sacramento River Filtration Bonds beating date of January 1st. 1920, and interest at the rate of four and one-half (4) per cent per annum; said bonds being on hand and unsold.

The bonds must be sold at not less than par and accrued interest, in an arount specified In the Contract Documents, to cover the cost of the work and contingencies of tho filtration project, and the money must be deposited in the City Treasury before the contract is finally signed. The complete Contract Documents may be examined at tbe office of the City Clerk, or at the office of the Filtration Division, or printed copies thereof will furnished to intending bidders upon request and the payment of a deposit of Five Dollars. All deposits for pamphlets will be refunded upon tneir return, in good condition, or if they are used in filing a proposal. No informal or irregular proposal or propositions for doing the work will be considered by the City at this time. The City reserves the right to reject any or all proposals and to increase or decrease the amount of any class or portion of the work.
