PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PH LOT Cardinals continue Reuss slump 3-0 Sports qa San Pedro OL California Mon July 25 1983 Scoreboard National League EAST DIVISION By Terry Johnson Staff writer ST LOUIS To hear Jerry Reuss tell it a left-hander who pitching badly but has fallen on hard times the last two months The Dodgers however may feel time for him to go back to the pitching style that made him the second-winningest left-hander in the National League in 1980 and Reuss may get the word and soon after suffering his sixth consecutive defeat Sunday To put it simply pitching coach Ron Perranoski said he may try to convince Reuss he must start throwing more fastballs like he did in 1980 and when he went a combined 28-10 throwing too many curveba'ls for the power pitcher he Perranoski said Sunday afternoon after St Louis beat Reuss 3-0 at Busch Stadium and knocked the Dodgers 4Vi games behind first-place Atlanta in the National League West During 1980-81 Reuss estimates he threw anywhere from 90 to 95 percent fastballs Since then the percentage has dropped to 80 for several reasons Reuss says and his record is 24-20 including 6-9 this season Jerry I think changing his pitching style is the right thing for him to Perranoski said talked to him about it I think throwing the breaking ball too Reuss was hit hard early allowing three runs in the first two innings and the Cardinals ran themselves out of a couple of potentially big innings Still he finished allowing only two earned runs in seven innings and struck out five without walking a batter know not like I rely on the Reuss whose last victory came on May 31 said just throw it 80 percent of the time as compared to 90 or 95 a degree I think pitching as well as I did in 1980 and '81 Sure love to go back to the old pattern if I thought that would But Reuss said there are reasons why he or One of which may be the different look the Dodgers have not to mention a young less experienced defense was throwing more fastballs then because I was getting people he said getting base hits off them It seems like I have to pitch out of a jam every inning Back then I had a heckuva rhythm going Now I get a lot more strikeouts with the curve than I used to complexion of our team has changed not suggesting I should get used to them or them to me but there are a lot more ground-ball hits that are getting through There are a lot of mis-plays not saying happened to me is someone fault and not trying to make excuses I gave up two earned runs in seven innings? We scored nine runs Friday night and 10 Saturday How many did we score today? of their (run-scoring) doubles was a foot fair down the left-field line Another was a soft one just inside the first-base line A lot of balls getting hurt on are because of situations getting hits off me with men on base who have been on In his defense Reuss points out that his earned-ran average over the last two months is 311 although he won and the Dodgers have scored an average of 314 during the same period will say in the last two months pitched more good games 2-to-l than bad he said should be winning two for every one I lose a 667 percentage and no one alive has that Pittsburgh 3 5 San Francisco 1-8 2nd gome 1 1 innings Montreal 7 Houston 3 Atlanta 12 Philadelphia 4 Cincinnati 4 New York 2 Chicago 5 San they get bigger than that with the game on the The funny thing is the Tigers thought they had Bob Boone the previous batter out at first on his grounder to short thought Boonie was shortstop Alan Trammel who went 5-for-5after walking in the first inning said finish was exciting no question but you want to give a chance to a player like Many of the Tigers also thought Rob Wilfong the batter before Boone was safe trying to stretch a bloop single into a double Wilfong pinch-hitting against Aurelio Lopez (6-4) hit a blooper to shallow center that Lemon right fielder Lynn Jones Trammel and second baseman Lou Whitaker all went after When it dropped in Wilfong saw no one was covering second But third baseman Marty Castillo and throw arrived about the same time as Wilfong and Castillo said he blocked the base with his knee and applied the tag That was the second out of the inning Lance Parrish who would have been the hero if umpire Rich Garcia had called Boone out at first hit his 12th home run leading off the top of the 12th against Luis Sanchez (8-4) The drive was well back into the seats in left games like this that really keep you up in the Parrish a lOth-inning replacement at catcher for Bill Fahey said By Dan McLean Staff writer When Chet Lemon came down (from the leap he likely come down from the high yet) he show the ball he just jerked his arm down dramatically The Detroit dugout emptied immediately players leaping in the air as though this July victory had been the seventh game of the World Series What it was Sunday at Anaheim Stadium was a 4-3 Detroit victory in 12 innings saved when Lemon took a two-run homer away from Rod Carew the third first baseman Manager John McNamara had written onto his lineup card That lineup card itself is becoming a candidate for the disabled list knew when I hit it it was a subdued Carew said in a subdued Angels clubhouse ball was out I knew I hit that ball well enough Especially here in the daytime The ball really carries well but everything seems to be going in the other direction not much you can do about At first Lemon said he was racing over to left-center with the thought of keeping the ball from getting through in the gap he said in a Detroit clubhouse that was anything but subdued just kept going back I found myself on the warning track I said 'Oh my goodness this ball might get just kept carrying and I tried to time my jump the most important thing and just do-or-die I felt myself (arm) go over the fence If it ever hits my glove worry about it I was just happy NEWS-PILOT 7236 NOTICE OF SALE In
