Shortage of sterile fruit flies Continued from Page Al a hazardous and flammable liquid according to William Carter deputy Los Angeles County district attorney in the environmental crimes division At the time Kiewit was put on probation and ordered to reimburse the city $12000 for the cost of an environmental consultant The city received the check for $12000 about three weeks ago City Attorney Michael Miller said According to Miller Kiewit was found in 1981 to have illegally buried materials on the Arcadia property Miller said that in 1985 Kiewit officials ordered another middle-of-the- night burial of more than 50 large drums containing hazardous substances Miller said used crankcase oil over large portions of the property apparently for dust control purposes Miller said Other materials dumped on the makeshift landfill included domestic trash scrap metal pipes wires glass ceramics concrete and batteries he said The attorneys for the redevelopment agency say the city still needs to determine the cleanup costs and the extent of the damages "It is somewhat difficult to tell because there's the surface contamination but what's underneath that is unknown" said Benjamin Kaufman the agency's attorney "We're not sure what we'll find when we dig up the site We didn't kpow we'd find all those drums" Clawson denied the claim that Kiewit officials ordered the burial of the drums "In 1985 empty barrels that had previously contained a flammable product were improperly disposed of on the site by an apparently well-meaning employee" he said "This was done without the person being told to do so and without the person telling us that he had done so" The buried drums and their contents were discovered in March 1989 by the Redevelopment Agency's demolition contractor and became the basis of the Los Angeles Superior Court case Miller also said that for many years Kiewit employees spread form the city about the contaminants or to undertake any removal of the chemical substances hazardous wastes and construction debris that had been dumped at the site before the company moved to Santa Fe Springs in 1986 The May 21 hearing was Kiewit's second in three months In a Los Angeles Superior Court case in March Kiewit Pacific Co pleaded no contest and was fined $50000 for unlawfully burying 50 industrial drums containing hazardous waste on the Arcadia property Two of the drums were found to contain concrete-curing solution we're doing all right" Cunningham said "We have every reason to beleive that the Medfly eradication effort in Southern California is working" California Department of Food and Agriculture Director Henry Voss said in a statement issued Saturday But Cunningham cautioned against assuming that the flies are gone simply because none have been found since May 1 The offspring from those flies will begin emerging sometime in June said Cunningham Under current Medfly Project guidelines the discovery of any new flies will necessitate at least one or two immediate aerial sprayings and more if there are not enough sterile flies available to treat the newly infested areas Continued from Page Al being released is similar to that of other successful eradication programs used in the past Cunningham's concerns come at a time when it appears the eradication efforts are gaining the upper hand over the stubborn pest which agriculture officials fear could devastate California's lucrative agricultural industry if it crosses the Tehachapi Mountains into the San Joaquin Valley No new Medflies have been found in Southern California since May 1 allowing state officials to stick to plans released in early May to phase out all aerial pesticide spraying in Los Angeles and Orange counties by the end of May Four weeks without any new fly finds "is an indicator that Hector Dyer dies one of Monrovia founding family By CHRIS EFTYCHIOU Staff Writer 4 Science: Experiment puts teen-ager in second place said "At the 220 mark he was about
