Ann Landers The BcuTij fieee People Sun Oct 28 1979 El vi Plea for careless ers Ttte a tiimato7i Animation is as great an art as poetry sculpture and music Dear Ann: May I address this plea to everyone who reads your column? It is the most difficult letter I have ever written in my life Two or more bicycle riders are traveling at a good speed A car approaches One stays on the side while another cuts across the road Then my personal nightmare returns Even though it happened three years ago it is never out of my mind It is almost dark light enough for a bicycle rider to see the cars but difficult for the drivers to see him Suddenly there is a bicycle in front of me I hit my brakes I pull to the right Thud What was that? Oh God! Could it be that kid on the bicycle? not possible! He was over there I saw him cross over What did I hit then? Lord let it be another bicycle rider! But it was! I prayed all night he would live I asked God to take me in his place I very nearly passed out when I saw his parents at the hospital I stayed for hours hoping for an encouraging report But there was none I wanted to tell them how sorry I was but I get the words out My grief was no match for theirs My parents had to drag me away from the hospital at dawn I wanted to be there in case there was some good news But the good news never came The boy died the following day The funeral was something I will never forget My parents felt it would be best if I attend but I stay away I had never seen so many good-looking teen-agers both boys and girls with tears streaming down their faces The boy must have had a thousand friends I heard the teachers talking What a fine student! A leader! never caused anyone a trouble He was the kind of young man every parent hopes his son will be The witnesses all said it my fault but nevertheless I will carry the burden of guilt forever Every time I see a bicycle rider I remember that face in the casket I see his parents outside his room in the hospital corridor I see his young weeping friends I see that interminable funeral procession My life will never be the same I know you print all of this letter but I hope you will print enough of it to let bicycle riders know that one careless moment can snuff out their lives and cause endless grief for family friends and the person who caused the death It will never go away Rapids Mich Dear your letter I change or cut a word of it Thank you for taking the time and putting yourself through the agony you must have suffered to write it Dear Ann: Your advice to the wife whose husband cheated on her stank She wanted to go see the woman and tell her off You advised her to leave well enough alone and not cheapen herself Why should the wife be denied the satisfaction of telling the tramp off? Her husband had his fun now her turn When people do dirt they should be made to pay for it When my husband had a quickie affair with a friend of mine I went over to her house and gave her a black eye It made me feel terrific for a week You should retire kiddo getting soft in the head -Hilda Dear Hilda: Thanks for the advice But hold your head under water waiting for the announcement get burned by a line too hot to handle Play it cool with Ann guide to and Petting What Are the Send your request to Ann Landers PO Box 11995 Chicago Illinois 60611 en- closing 50 cents and a long stamped self-addressed envelope Characters draw life from pen By Jeannie Grand Staff writer On any Saturday morning in the fall a large percentage of the male population can be found staring at a television set Seventy-year-old Amby Paliwoda of Manhattan Beach is no exception but unlike the majority he be watching a football game Instead like most of the youngsters on his block Paliwoda will be watching kiddie cartoons No not senile Far from it You could just say that Paliwoda is 79 going on 7 That comes from being an animator for 45 years the first 25 of them with Disney Paliwoda watches the animated cartoons for the same reason Ray Malavasi watches the Oakland game films to check out the competition to see if they have anything new or if they goofed Animation is life and like the carefree creatures he draws being an animator seems to have kept him young Only the crop of wavy white hair betrays his age conversation is liberally sprinkled with and punctuated by cartoon language words like and You almost expect his conversation to appear in a bubble over his head Contorting his incredibly mobile face he becomes the character he wants to draw Expression after expression flow from his pencil onto the blank sheet below my English he says gesturing toward the pile of anthropomorphic drawings are my words I use images to Sitting at his drawing board at Duck Soup Productions an animation studio in Santa Monica Paliwoda explains what is involved in this field animator is an industrious creative guy who takes it out of the air and puts it down on paper all taken out of whole cloth he says his blue pencil fairly flying across the sketch paper He tilts the head slightly now he is wondering like a human he says been 20 years since I drew this son of a gun have to have a feeling for these he adds He notes the studio possibly have a model or film clip for every expression or move the animators will draw So they take turns making different faces until the artist sees the one looking for Paliwoda concedes that grown men mugging is slightly bizarre Artist E2 col1 JWwwk WJWV 'A" utf Staff photo by Michael Steinbacher The macaws and gooney birds are from a Kellogg's Fruit Loops Amby Pallwoda works on a gooney bird sketch at Duck Soup Productions In Santa Monica i tmm 0 mm.
