THIRTY-FOUR THE BRIDGEPORT.POST, FRIDAY, 14, 1969. CHANGE IS URGED IN TECH SCHOOL HARTFORD (UPI) Members ot the legislature's Education committee, which has been exploring the subject of vocational training, received an education of their own Thursday when the curriculum director for Haven's public schools advised them they were headed in the wrong direction. John McGavak told the committee in a public hearing that more money should be spent by the state on "comprehensive high schools" rather than on vocational schools. "We put money into vocation- ill schools and say it works," he said. "We put less money into comprehensive schools to prove it won't work.

Vocational training is much more expensive than academic training." Millions for Mllford To emphasize his point, Mc- Gavak noted than an anticipated expenditure of $3.5 million was proposed for vocational school construction in New London and a suggested J9 million program was suggested for the Milford- Stratford area. "This is not operation but construction," he said. "Con- OBITUARIES Albert Ames, Sr, rics, who died Tuesday, will iitder what similar funds could do for existing programs within existing buildings or One of McGavak's primary contentions was that students interested in pursuing a skilled trade should not be Isolated from other students being trained in more academic courses.
