fsft 4 Sec II Lubtock, (Tcx.t Morn. Avalanche, Mar. 4, 1948 TROOPS NEEDED TO FIGHT REPS Chinese Army, U. S. Advisers, Training Soldiers On Formosa By FRED HAMPSON Prea Siaff Wriler PINGTUNG, Formosa, March 3 Chinese army and its U.

S. advisers are turning out soldiers troops who look like they can fight. On a quick visit to this new government training base -on southern Formosa, I found a morale which is in sharp contrast to the weariness and indifference of the nationalist troops usually seen in China. The program is turning out a better fighting man than those now bear arms for the on the civil war battlefields. Trainees Work Out They say a Chinese soldier properly trained is as good as any in the world.

One can believe it af- seeing the- trainees work out on the warm drill grounds nnd ranges of Pinglung. I -was watching a bayonet drill. A U. S. sergeant who fought in Franca and Germany was standing nearby looking on.

"Most Chinese he observed, "don't-' look to me like they could fight a lick. But these guys look like they could fight plenty." How many trained divisions does China need, and can they be produced in time to turn the tide against the Chinese Communists? Supplies Are Short I asked Gen, Sun Li-Jen, in command of all Chinese army training bases, how many well- trained divisions he thought were peeded to throw back the Communist threat. The general said no one knew answer, but he thought 20 divisions would make big dif- ierence. How wjll it. take to produce these divisions, Sun added, would depend largely on supplies, which are extremely short.

(Sun, admirer of the U. S. Army, was graduated from Virginia Military institute. He- commanded the crack U. new first army in Burma.) In any event, the training program has something to show in the way of progress.

And no telling what this base can do in the way of turning out finished troops when it operates at peak capacity. Miserable with coughs from colds or smoking stuffy HOST? STILL ONLY SMITH BROTHERS Elwin Ellison Given Awards At Ceremony Elwin Ellison, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Ellison of 2210 Twenty-fourth, was presented the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and three Gold Stars in lieu of second, third and fourth Air Medals at the regular meeting of the Organized Naval Reserve last night in the Engineering auditorium at Texas Technological college. Lt.

Marvin Hunter, Naval Reserve recruiting officer here, presented the awards to Ellison, The honors would ordinarily have been' paid Ellison while he was still in the active Navy, but information received by liis mother from the Navy staled that parts or her sons service record hud been misplaced, thereby causing a delay in the presentation of the medals. Ellison, who served as a radioman-gunner on a dive bomber in the Pacific theater of operations, participated in at least 25 combat missions. The Nevy citation states in part that the awards are being made "for a series "of meritorius acts while participating in aerial flight" from Dec. 23, 1943 to May 9, 1944. Ellison entered the Navy while a senior at Lubbock High school.

He joined the Navy Sept. 22, 1942, and went overseas in September, 1043. He took part in the campaigns at Munda, Rabaul and Bougainville. He returned to the Uni-. ted States in 1944, later going to Pearl Harbor as a flight test crewman.

He was discharged at Alameda, on Sept. 22, 1946. He is now a sophomore business administration student at Texas Tech, and a member of the college Socii club. Rites Set Today For Mrs. J.
