through us even though it may be hardship it's the best for us Jesus in Romans 8:28 promises that all things work together for good to them that love God and are called according to his purpose just by faith thanking Him for the fire Since Jesus is alive and has all things in hand he has a purpose for this" Thomson added The new pastor says the church still smells of smoke "but that's nothing as far as the sanctuary is concerned just Thomson thinks the loss may not be as high as the original estimates of $20000 but if it is he says all right with him "As far as finances just fine We have a solid church it was built in 1919 and it helped to confine the fire sure there will be some financial loss but In looking at the problem faced by church which had no insurance when the fire hit Rev Thomson said "we hope the community will help the other church as much as Bradley said the insurance on his building had been cancelled in 1968 forcing them to make some $30000 in renovations to the aged church "We could have gotten insurance but somewhat through our carelessness we kept putting it off" he explained The church has some 300 members including children but Bradley says the majority of the people can't get a day off work to help start the rebuilding program "Our church people are poor if they missed a day from work they'd lose their jobs and he said flat on our backs right now and we really know what to do We know what our needs are but our plans are incomplete trying to get the membership together to try and formulate plans that may be proper and fair to the community and all he said One of the churches biggest losses were the two pianos and organ that were destroyed by the ravaging flames By XAVIER HERMOSILLO need my eyes today this is one time I need my Rev DeWitt Bradley has been pastor of the Union Baptist Church in San Pedro for 29 years but today all that remains of the parish is burned wood An arsonist set the church at 101 Harbor Blvd afire last eek and the man who brought the small congregation through nearly three decades of its ministry is looking for help The burned rubble in the church amounting to more than $50000 in damage has not been touched since the early morning fire raced through the old structure Friday Bradley ho suffered permanent blindness three vears ago as the result of an eye disease is waiting for his younger numster Rev John Gates to return from a vacation Gates left a week before the blaze and Bradley says "I know come running back as soon as heard of our The fire that nearly destroyed Bradley's church came just four days after a similar fire caused extensive damage to a third floor office of the First Baptist Church 555 Seventh St San Pedro However although both churches were ravaged by fires started by arsonists the aftermath in both cases seems worlds apart Rev Rich Thomson was in his third day at the First Baptist Church when the fire broke out He had just taken the pastorate after coming from an associate position in Hurricane West Virginia While Bradley's church is struggling in their attempts to get reorganized Thomson says everything in his parish is fine "The day after the fire 25 or 30 people came and helped clean up and it was a holiday (July he said Thompson says his congregation is thankful for the fire beca use it has brought a sense of unity to the 350 members "The Iord says in Ephesians 5:20 to give thanks for all the 30-year-old minister said pianos and organ really the reverend said "We paid $6000 for that Hammond organ and both pianos are beyond repair Our Stefoway Grand piano cost us $5000 and it was destroyed we need the restoration of the building most of he added Bradley says the church had raised the funds for the pianos and organ and had already paid off the $30000 renovation bill Now starting all over again there ever was a time in our lives when as an organization we needed the support of the community in our struggle to overcome this tragic event it is now appreciate any help we can get to help us get back on our feet to somehow get the building restored so this fine group of Christian people may continue to train and guide our young people and our poor and needy he said One area in which Bradley is seeking support is from groups or individuals who might help clear the burning remains out of the building Included in the pile of rubble are the church records which were destroyed On Saturday morning a cleanup program has been planned for all volunteers might need some people with a truck to help take the stuff away but we need financial assistance more than anything so we can continue our worship Bradley said The Sunday morning after the fire the congrega tion surveyed the damage and then held an afternoon service at St Universal Church of Faith at 211 Pacific Ave The church available for the morning service so Bradley says they will set up chairs in the church yard that faces Harbor Boulevard and conduct outdoor worship services are on our back and our hand is definitely out because we know whattodo hoping other churches in the community will help have indicated they would help and I believe some of them are going to be eyes for me
