26. The Sewanee football eleven is the undisputed champion of the South for 1909, the boys from the Mountain not hav ing lost a game with a Southern college this season, though playing all the strongest aggregations and finally winding up the season here yesterday by defeat1 ng Vanderbilt by a score of 16 to 6 after a most spectacular contest With determination never before seen In a football eleven the Sewanee Tigers simply played Vanderbilt off her feet and the victory came to the Tigers not because Vanderbilt didnt play as, good a game as she was capable of, but because Sewanee played a phenomenal game a game in which she absolutely refused to allow the word defeat to enter her vocabulary. The Championship. It was a great game with both teams playing their best, with both teams knowing that the Southern championship depended on the outcome. But Sewanee was determined and played a game which would make even her most ardent supporters sit up and take notice.

And the greater is the Sewanee victory because no critics of the game though the purple and white had a chance against the great machine constructed by Dan McGugln. Dan knew that the odds favorpd Vanderbilt to win but he knew that Sewanee would be hard to down. Since that Auburn-Sewanee game in Birmingham in which the Mountain boys defeated the Alabama squad by one point, McGugin has been frightened. McGugln declared when Vanderbilt defeated Auburn that his team got away lucky and Auburn apparently had stage fright. Dan McGugln feared the result.

Moise the Star. And In this great game Moise, of Sewanee, was the bright and Bhining star. His efforts were almost superhuman and he is the idol of all Nashville. For the home team Morrison drew the honors and he too played a great game. Sewanee was simply too much for the Commodores.

The Tigers have been waiting for this game and they have been working for it. The Commodores took it for granted that victory would be theirs. It was a sad night for Vanderbilt. The victory yesterday is the first for Sewanee over Vanderbilt since 1902. Last season the two teams tied up a 6 to 6 score.

A large crowd was on hand when tlfq game began. Sewanee scored three touchdowns wrhile Vanderbilt was lucky to get off with one. Here is the record of the result of the games between the two teams for the past eighteen years: Record of the Years. 1891 Vanderbilt, 22; Sewanee, 0. 1891 Vanderbilt, 26; Sewanee, 4.
